CHAPTER 66
SKYLAR POV - FLASHBACK
As I was sitting on my bed trying to control my sobs. If dad caught me crying he would beat me for it. But I saw Jax today and it just messed me up even further. I really liked seeing him but I know that he’s in danger if he comes near me. Dad has sent people to his house now to teach him a lesson and I don’t know if he’s going to survive that. And thinking of that just made me cry even more.
I saw my window fly open and I jumped up off the bed and Jax was climbing through my window.
“What the hell are you doing?” I asked.
“I followed you home. What does it look like?” He said. So I ran to the window and I looked outside to make sure there was no one hanging around and I closed my window again.
“There are cameras everywhere here. My dad doesn’t trust anyone.” I said.
“Yeah. I could tell that. I saw the cameras and I made sure to stay in their blind spot. It’s alright. No one knows that I’m here.” He tried to assure me. But I wasn’t that assured of anything.
“He sent people to your house.” I said.
“I know. I heard. I was watching at the front window. There’s no one at my house. So, if they break in it will just look like a robbery.” He said.
“You have to leave. Dad is really mad and I don’t know if he’s finished with me yet. He could come in at any second.” I said, trying to keep my voice low.
“Why did he beat the maid?” Jax asked.
“I don’t know. That happened before I got home. He just wanted me to see what he had done. She obviously did something that he didn’t like.” I said.
“Skylar. You need to calm down. Stop freaking out so much.” He said.
I took a couple of deep breaths but then I heard my father coming up the stairs and I made Jax be quiet.
Dad went to his room and did a few things before he went back downstairs and I heard him leave the house completely.
I let out a breath of relief when I knew that he wasn’t in the house anymore.
Jax got me to sit on the bed and he sat on the side of my bed as well, just looking at me and he looked around my room.
I saw that I had put a scarf up on my wall to hide the second little closet in my room that had a padlock on it.
I hated looking at it so I nailed a scarf at the top of it and it hung down over the closet and it just looked like a decoration now. To brighten up the room.
But I was more glad now that I had done it, so Jax couldn’t see.
“I understand now why you did what you did.” He said.
“What?” I asked.
“Why you tried to kill yourself. You never get any peace. I saw those kids at school. I saw your dad. It’s never ending.” He said.
“I know. But I learnt to deal with it a long time ago.” I said.
“That’s not something that you should deal with. Do you have anyone to talk to?” He asked.
“No. But it’s alright. I have a journal. I like to draw. I find ways to occupy myself.” I said.
“That’s not really good enough.” He said.
I could tell that he was thinking that I was a loser. I had no friends. My home life was absolute shit. And I did nothing to stand up for myself.
“You really don’t need to pretend to be my friend.” I said.
“I’m not pretending.” He said, looking insulted.
“I’m sorry.” I said, quickly putting my head down.
“Hey, you don’t have anything to be sorry for. I’m just sorry that I left you in the hospital with that man.”
“Jax. He managed to figure out who you were overnight. He showed me a photo of you the next morning. He didn’t like you standing up to him. That’s why this is dangerous. And why he’s gone to your house now.” I explained.
“He’s using me to get to you.”
“He knows that I don’t want you to get hurt because of me.”
Jax looked like he was getting pissed off at what my father was doing, but there was nothing he could do. He knew that. He knew that there was nothing that we could do.
I mean, he never mentioned anything about his parents having money or having the same sort of power as my dad.
I don’t think Jax would be able to stand against him. And I don’t know why Jax was being so casual knowing that those men were going to his house right now.
He didn’t seem to be in a hurry to leave the house. Even though I knew that there were still bodyguards hanging around.
Dad had a lot of them. And they were always on the clock. They were always watching me and making sure that dad was safe.
I knew that there had to be people that hated dad and wanted him dead.
But I don’t know what he does in his business life. He doesn’t talk about that in front of me.
To be honest, I don’t even know what he does.
“Hey, you don’t need to worry about me or those bodyguards coming after me. Alright.” Jax said.
“You don’t know what they're capable of.” I said.
“Guess what, they don’t know me.”
I just looked at him like he was in denial and I just wished that he would believe me, but he wouldn’t.
“Besides, if he comes after me then I’ll just have to make sure that I repay the favor.” Jax added, causing me to laugh.
But I quickly covered my mouth.
“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to laugh at you.” I said. But he was smiling back at me.
“When was the last time you actually smiled or laughed?”
“I don’t know.”
“Well, it was worth it then.” He said, relaxing back on my bed.
He stayed in my room for hours while we were talking about a lot of different things in our lives.
It felt weird. Like I actually had a friend for a change. But I wasn’t focusing on everything in my life. We were talking about everything else. School and that sort of stuff.
We totally avoided the subject of family. But we knew that he had to leave at some point.
“Alright. I’ll come back and see you soon.” He said, climbing back out my window.
“Alright. I look forward to it.” I said. So he flashed that handsome smile at me again and he climbed back down the vines.
He landed on the ground and I made sure that the coast was clear before I gave him a thumbs up and he got out of there without any security seeing him.
