CHAPTER 42
SKYLAR POV
That night Jax and I were alone in the kitchen. After Jax confessed his feelings for me, I thought my heart was going to melt.
This whole thing started with a business transaction with them agreeing to help me destroy my father, but it’s turned into so much more than that.
I know that he’s still out there and he’s still a threat, but that didn’t seem to bother me as much as it probably should.
Being here with the guys is everything I need for myself right now. It’s everything that I want, without knowing that it’s what I’ve always wanted.
“So, the guys are busy. I was thinking that us two could go out tonight. Sort of an official date. Just the two of us.” Jax said. I thought about it for a second, but I didn’t need time to really think about the answer. Just what I was going to wear.
“Okay. That sounds really good.” I said. So Jax smiled at me and grabbed my hand and his wallet and keys. “Wait. Don’t I have to get dressed?” I asked.
“You look fine. Just the way you are.” He said.
So we went outside and got in Jax’s car and he leaned over and kissed me as soon as I was in the car.
He started to back out of the driveway when suddenly there were several loud horns blaring all around us and a lot of unfamiliar vehicles surrounding us. Jax had to slam on the brakes as I looked around and I grabbed Jax’s hand really tightly as I was still looking outside, feeling the fear rising up inside of me and it was probably very evident on my face as well.
Jax looked around at the cars, looking at the lights that were shining on us without saying anything.
He didn’t look scared. He looked like he was assessing the situation with vigilance.
The doors of those other cars swung open and a whole heap of men dressed in black started piling out of the cars and one of them forcibly opened Jax’s car door.
“I’m so sorry Skylar.” Jax said, right before two men grabbed him and pulled him out of the car and pinned him to the ground beside the car.
My door then swung open and a pair of hands reached in and grabbed me while I started fighting and screaming.
“Jax!” I screamed.
The man grabbed me around the waist and started pulling me back towards the car that he came in but I fought him like I had never fought anyone before.
I threw my head back heatbutting him. I could tell that it hurt him, but not enough for him to put me down.
He was a lot bigger than me and my feet weren’t even touching the ground so I was kicking violently and I kept getting him in the legs, but that still didn’t slow him down.
This guy felt like he was made of stone.
As we got closer to his car I started fighting and screaming even louder for help, hoping that one of the people in one of the houses would hear us. But the houses around here are so spread out because of the massive yards that they have, I doubt anyone could hear me.
I was dragged all the way to the unfamiliar convoy of cars that were straight across from us and no matter how much I screamed, I wasn’t sure that anyone could hear me.
The guy eventually put his hand over my mouth to keep me quiet so I bit him and he pulled his hand away from my mouth.
I looked back at Jax and I saw him trying to get up. Desperately trying to get up, looking at me as he was kicked in the stomach and he fell back down to the ground.
I don’t think I will ever forget the look of pain on his face. The helplessness. He was never going to forgive himself for this.
As we approached the convoy of cars I looked up and I saw my father standing in the center. He had that cold stern angry look that I was way too familiar with. The look that he got right before he would beat me unconscious.
I knew that this was a bad situation before, but seeing my father here, my heart just sank knowing that he’s the one that orchestrated all of this.
I knew that he was a vengeful man, but I had honestly hoped that he was going to let me go. I was nothing but a punching bag to him anyway.
I don’t understand why he’s so intent on having me back when all he’s ever told me was that I was a waste of space and oxygen.
“Put her in the driver’s seat.” Dad ordered. So the man walked around to the other side of the car and pulled the door open and he pushed me inside and slammed the door.
My father got into the passenger seat and as I looked at him I saw the shiny metal of that familiar gun pointed at me. The same gun that I tried to kill myself with.
That seemed so long ago, but I knew that I couldn’t run.
Not with all these men around, and they still had Jax. They would hurt him. I was sure of that. They were definitely going to kill him if I tried to run right now. And dad would have no problem shooting me.
It’s not the first time he would have tried to kill me and then pass it off as something else after he got to the hospital.
And he’s got enough powerful friends that he would get away with it as well.
Everyone knew what he was like. But because of how influential he is in the city, everyone just chose to look the other way.
Why bother with one teenage girl when they could do so much more by being in business with him.
I sat there weighing up my options for a moment, but they were pretty slim.
From where I was sitting, I couldn’t see Jax anymore. I didn’t know what they were doing to him.
I was terrified that they were going to kill him.
I didn’t have a choice but to do as I was told. I wouldn’t be able to live with myself if they killed him because of me.
