CHAPTER 8

HARRY’S POV

Sitting in the cafeteria that day, neither three of us were interested in what was going on near the food line. We heard the commotion but we just dismissed it as general girl drama and jealousy. That’s usually how these high school brats acted. I’ve been to enough schools to know that. But as soon as Skylar’s clothes got ripped, it got my attention. I have spent my life around all kinds of people, but I have never seen anyone with scars on them like that. It was all kinds of insane and she had my attention after that. I became very curious about Skylar, wondering what the hell kind of life she’d had to endure to suffer those amount of marks.
When I looked over at Jax, he was frozen in his place. He was staring at her with such a sorrowful look on his face. He was really affected by it, but it made no sense. He’d never been beaten like that. He wasn’t marked or branded like that or anything.
Skylar managed to get away from the girls that were harassing her and she looked at us, before she ran from the cafeteria. But that’s when Jax turned to Lucas and I.
“I know her.” Jax said in a broken tone. “She’s an old friend from middle school. We were really close back then.” He explained.
Jax had never mentioned her before. Or, if he did then it was in passing and didn’t make a big deal out of it because I don’t remember.
As soon as she took off Jax was really concerned and wanted to follow her.
So we got up from our seats and we left the cafeteria and tried to follow which direction she went. Jax somehow followed one trial without hesitation, like he knew exactly where she had gone.
We ended up leaving the school building through a side door and we got to the football field when Jax told us to stand back. He didn’t want to scare her anymore than she already was.
He went behind the bleachers alone and he was there for a few minutes before Lucas got a call on his phone and we had to leave.
I didn’t want to interrupt Jax but I had to sing out to him to get him to come with us.
He came out as soon as I called and Lucas was looking at Jax who looked a little worried and pissed off.
“Maybe she’s gonna go back to class.” Lucas said.
“Not in torn clothes, she won’t. And not in her emotional state. I shouldn’t be leaving her alone right now.” Jax said, looking down at the ground.
“You didn’t see the look she gave me when we were in the cafeteria.” Jax said.
“We saw.” I said. And Jax seemed to think about it for a while as we were walking back towards the building.
“People usually go to where they feel safe after something like this. We can’t skip school on our first day but we’ll go this afternoon.” Jax said. And we all agreed with him. We needed to find out where the hell she got all of those marks from. It couldn’t have been from those two bitches at school. They aren’t capable of that. At least, not to that extent.
I could see it on Jax’s face. He was desperate to find out what happened. And we were starting to feel the same way. Skylar was in a lot of trouble here.
“Do you think going to her house is a good idea? I mean, what if she’s getting those injuries at home and we make it worse by showing up there tonight?” Lucas asked. And we both looked at him, knowing that he had a good point. We can’t make anything worse for her.
“Alright. We’ll look out for her tomorrow when she comes back to school.” Jax agreed.
We finished out the rest of the day just trying to get by with whatever attention the others gave us, but we weren’t too interested.
Madison turned out to be a real piece of work. After what she did in the cafeteria, she acted like it was all fine and nothing had happened at all. She was perfectly okay with us knowing that she was a bully. But every time she came near us Jax would always turn his back. He was making it really obvious what he thought of her and her little stunt today.
That afternoon we had other business to attend to but we could tell that Jax’s mind wasn’t on it. But we all agreed that we couldn’t go to her house in case we made things worse. We needed to talk to Skylar before we did anything.
So Jax was up bright and early the next day. Either that or he didn’t sleep at all and we got to school pretty early.
We stood out the front of the building waiting to see Skylar. But we weren’t making it obvious that we were waiting for anyone. We were just hanging out on one of the benches out the front.
A lot of guys and girls were saying hello and some of the guys on the football team stopped to talk to us. Apparently their coach was wanting us to join the team but we weren’t interested.
Jax was keeping a close eye out but when the bell rang and it was time to go into class we hadn’t seen Skylar.
“Do you think she got past us?” Lucas asked.
“No way. I would have seen her. I’ve watched everyone.” Jax said. And he stood up looking down both sides of the road but there was no sign of her. “We can’t wait. We have to go over there now. I know that something is wrong.” Jax insisted.
I knew that he had to go and find her. And this time we didn’t object. We also thought that it was weird that she wasn’t here. So we left school and Jax got behind the wheel of the car and sped off away from school.
