CHAPTER 40
As we were getting closer to home Harry got another message from Lucas causing him to grip the steering wheel even tighter than he was before. He didn’t tell me what was in the message, but it obviously wasn’t good news.
I saw Harry constantly glancing at me out of the corner of his eyes and he saw me looking at him with a worried look on my face. I didn’t know what we were about to walk into here so he reached over and held my hand again to try and calm me down. I guess he was trying to let me know that everything was going to be alright. But I could tell that nothing was alright.
I was getting more and more nervous the closer we got to home and when Harry pulled into the driveway, there was a strange BMW sitting in the driveway which caused my heart to sink. It obviously belonged to William.
I slowly opened my door as I was looking at the BMW and I could feel the butterflies erupting inside of my stomach.
Harry walked over to me where I was standing next to the car and he held my hand as we started walking towards the front veranda.
“Alright. Just remember. Don’t say anything and stay close to me.” Harry said. I just nodded her head, not knowing what to say or what to expect.
When we got to the door I took a deep breath and let it out before Harry opened the door and we walked inside to the living room where everyone was waiting for us.
I could see Harry standing protectively in front of me as we walked inside but I decided that I wasn’t going to stand behind Harry, I walked up and stood next to him. I was still holding his hand but my facial expression had changed. I was determined not to look nervous in front of William. I’d spent a lot of my life being scared of my father, I wasn’t going to be scared of this man as well. He was an intimidating man wearing a very expensive three-piece suit who was standing next to the fireplace with his arms folded across his chest.
I was actually showing no emotion at all. Like I wasn’t scared or anything. I was proud of myself at this point. I didn’t think I could do it. Harry just looked at me and grinned.
William greeted us with that fake smile that I had seen so often on my father before he started looking me up and down.
“Wow. I heard you guys were sharing one girl. I didn’t believe it until now. I can see why you’re sharing her though. Let me know when you get sick of her.” William smirked, still staring at me. But all I felt was disgust.
I saw anger flash across Harry’s face, but also Jax and Lucas.
Lucas was the first one to regain his composure.
“Hello William. I’ve heard a lot about you.” I said. My voice did not falter once, not betraying me at all.
“Don’t act all innocent with me. I can only imagine what goes on inside this house when I’m not here. How can you three live with yourselves knowing that you’re all sharing the same woman?” He spat with nothing but malice in his voice.
“I don’t mean to seem rude or anything, but what are you doing here? I heard that you insisted on seeing the guys because you had something urgent to discuss. I can’t imagine that urgent thing could have been me.” I said, still keeping a straight face. But the guys weren’t as composed as I was right now. They had to look away to stop their grins from showing.
“I have an idea. Maybe you should bring her along with you so she can also learn the business. It might come in handy having a cute little doll like that as a distraction for the people you’re going to go and visit.” William suggested. And this time I put my hand on Harry’s arm, knowing that he was going to definitely lose his temper at that.
“Alright dad. You’ve told us what you want us to do. We’ll pass all of the information on to Harry and we’ll handle the situation.” Lucas said.
So William stands up straight and fixes his suit while staring at me with a creepy look on his face before he walks across the living room and leaves the house.
We all let out a sigh of relief as soon as he was gone and I saw all three of the guys visibly relax as soon as he left.
Lucas rushed over to me and caught me in such a tight hug that I was actually having trouble breathing.
“I can’t believe you did that. No one ever speaks up to my father like that.” Lucas said, pulling back to look at me.
“You did.” I said.
“He’s my dad. I’m used to it. You’ve never shown that side of yourself before.” Lucas said.
“Tell me about it. It was fucking hot.” Harry said, kissing the side of my face.
“I just told myself that I wasn’t going to get bullied anymore. He reminded me a lot of my father.” I said. So Lucas leaned in to hug me a lot gentler this time and I felt Harry’s hand on my back.
Jax stood up from the couch and he had a different look on his face right now though. It was more concerning than anything else.
“Guys. I know that she was brave and everything for talking to William like that, but will Skylar be able to hold that strength while dealing with William’s henchmen?” Jax asked.
I could understand him being so concerned about me, but I don’t think I have done anything to cause me to worry about his henchmen.
“Jax. I appreciate that you’re worried about me and all, but I don’t want to be seen as weak anymore. I don’t want to be a victim. I wanted to show you that by facing William. But now I want to actually start training. Properly. So I won’t have to always rely on you. I mean, you guys can’t stay by my side 24/7. It’s time to do this.” I explained.
I could see that they were all hesitant about this request, but I didn’t care. I needed this. I needed them to train me and they could see how serious I was.
I know that they want to be the ones to protect me all the time, but just because they train me doesn’t mean that I am not going to still need them. If I ever get in trouble they are going to be the first people I call.
“Alright then. We can start training. We’ll start training you in self defense and then we’ll move on to the way we learnt to fight. You’ll become one of us, if that’s what you really want.” Harry said, his voice full of hesitation.
This meant everything to me. They might be hesitant about teaching me how to fight, but this decision marks something completely different for me. It is deepening my relationship with them. I’m not going to be someone who needs protection but I will now be one of the team. And I was excited about that. I wanted it. More than anything.
