CHAPTER 22
As one of our classes was letting out so we could go to lunch I heard my name being called over the loudspeaker to go to the office and I froze in the hallway.
I never got called to the office. I don’t even think they know who the hell I am. This isn’t going to be a routine visit.
“I’m coming with you.” Jax insisted.
“You don’t have to. I’m sure I’ll be fine.” I said.
“No. You’re facing this alone. We all know it’s not going to be anything good.” Jax said. So I looked at the others and they said they would get a table at the cafeteria and wait for us.
So Jax and I started walking towards the office together.
Once we got there we were shown to the vice Principal’s office and there were two detectives in there waiting for me.
Jax and I had a seat on the couch that was in the office and I could tell that they didn’t have good news for me.
“Skylar. We’re really sorry but despite the scars and bruises covering your body that do provide some evidence against your father, that’s just not enough.” One of the detectives said. And my heart started hammering in my chest.
“What?” Jax yelled.
“We need more direct and conclusive evidence so we can charge your father. Otherwise his lawyers will have it thrown out of court.” The detective said.
I knew it. My father is going to get away with everything. They aren’t going to press charges against him.
Should I be angry about this or should I be happy that he’s not going to be in jail and I would have more of a chance to get my revenge on him with the help of Jax, Harry and Lucas?
I didn’t know which one I should be happy about. I think I was in shock, more than anything else.
“You saw that bastard at the hospital. You saw him trying to get to her then. He would have killed her. She tried to kill herself because of what he’s done to her. And now you’re saying that he’s not going to jail because of insufficient evidence? This is complete bullshit.” Jax yelled.
“We can provide you with a restraining order so he can’t come near you.” The detective said. And that’s when I realized that they were all looking at me. So I wiped the tear away from my eye.
“Don’t bother. It’s only a piece of paper. It won’t keep him away.” I said.
“If he goes near you then we can arrest him.” The detective said. But I started shaking my head.
“That’s not going to do anything if he’s already killed me by the time you get there.” I said. So Jax put his arm around me, trying to comfort me a little.
“I told you Skylar. We’re here for you and he is never going to come near you again. I promise.” Jax said.
Obviously I was going to have a massive fight trying to go through the legal framework. It was obvious that the only way dad was going to pay for anything was if I did it myself.
So I stood up and I thanked the detectives for coming to tell me that and I walked out of the office.
Jax was surprised and he caught up to me in the hallway.
He could tell that I was upset but I wasn’t talking about it. I felt like I was in a daze as I was walking to the cafeteria.
I didn’t even notice everyone staring at me as I walked into the room with Jax who had his arm around me again, and we sat down at the table where Harry and Lucas were waiting.
“What the hell happened?” Lucas asked, really concerned.
“The detectives were just here and they don’t have enough evidence to charge her father. The scars on her body don’t count.” Jax said softly so no one at the closest tables to us couldn’t hear.
Lucas reached over and grabbed my hand. Letting me know that he was here for me, but I was still in a daze. I was just staring at the table. I couldn’t make sense of anything right now. I was trying to get my thoughts straight, but all I could see was my dad’s eyes flashing through my head. The same eyes that looked at me right before he was about to attack me.
“I knew they weren’t going to be able to do anything. I don’t know why I expected they would.” I said.
“This is crap. How can those scars not be enough to charge him?” Harry asked.
“Because it’s dad. He always has an ace up his sleeve. He knows how to get out of trouble. He’s been doing it for years.” I said.
“Just remember, you’re not alone this time. You don’t have to face him if he shows up.” Lucas said.
“And you’re 18. So when he shows up and orders you to go home, you say no and he can’t do anything about it. Just make sure that we’re with you when that happens.” Jax said. And I nodded my head.
I was going to be forever grateful to the guys for everything that they’ve done for me and they are going to do for me. But that didn’t change the fact that my father was rich, powerful and dangerous. Which is a lethal combination.
My biggest fear at the moment was that he was going to find a way to hurt them. I didn’t want any of these guys to get hurt because of me. Not after everything they’ve done. And I don’t want to lose them as my friends. I finally feel like I’m starting to belong somewhere and I don’t want him to take that away from me.
Although, alienating me is his specialty. He’s been doing it my whole life. Just so he can do whatever he wants to me and get away with it.
But I’m not going to allow him to hurt them.
The guys were talking softly about strategies and whatever they could do to ensure my safety. The first was to make sure that I was never alone. Not for a moment.
Lucas obviously raised his hand and said that he would gladly take the night shift. But Jax punched him in the arm.
I just knew that if it came down to it, I knew that I would have to take drastic measures to protect myself and them from dad.
“I was just merely saying, we aren’t going to leave her alone for a minute so I’ll take the night shift. I don’t mind sleeping in the spare room.” Lucas said.
“Would you shut up and just think before you speak for once in your life.” Harry said.
“I am thinking. I’m thinking that no one is going to ever touch our girl.” Lucas said. And immediately my head snapped up when he said ‘our girl’. And I sat there staring at him, he looked back at me not being able to figure out why I was looking at him the way I was.
