CHAPTER 68

The rest of the day went by pretty quickly, but everyone was talking about what happened in the cafeteria.
Grace had to leave early and was taken to the hospital apparently. The nurse thought that she had a broken nose and that was more than she could treat at the school.
But Harry sent a warning to her father about speaking out against me. He wasn’t going to let it happen and they weren’t going to let that bitch interrupt my schooling because they knew how important it was to me.
As soon as school was over I sat in the back with Harry and Jax drove to a funeral home where I got out of the car and I looked up at the building.
The guys didn’t say anything to me but they could tell that I wanted to be anywhere but here right now.
So we walked into the building and we were greeted by a man who took us into a private room where another man was waiting.
“Hello Skylar.” He said, looking at me with that same fake smile that my father always wore on his face.
“Uncle Kayden.” I said, shocked.
“Look at you. I haven’t seen you in years.” He said, standing up.
“Yeah. That’s what happens when you disappear and turn your back on your own niece.”
“Wow. You’ve gotten a little spicier since last time.” He said, looking at the three guys surrounding me. “Aren’t you going to introduce me?” Kayden asked.
“This is Harry, Jax and Lucas. Their friends who I’ve been staying with.” I said.
“I don’t think I really want to know what goes on in that house.” Kayden smirked.
“Good. Because it’s none of your fucking business.” Harry said, staring at him.
Kayden was surprised that Harry spoke to him like that, but he laughed it off and sat back down.
“Are they going to wait outside while we make the arrangements?” Kayden asked.
“No. They’re going to be here with me. But they won’t interfere unless they have to.” I said. So he simply nodded and we all sat down around the table.
The man from the funeral home brought out a lot of different books for us to look at. Samples of coffins and flowers and all that sort of stuff.
Kayden seemed to know what he was doing and he went for the most expensive of every choice. But that didn’t surprise me. It was probably dad’s money that he was spending. And even if it wasn’t, Kayden had enough of his own that he could afford that.
He would ask my opinion after he made the choice and I just agreed.
Honestly, I didn’t care. I wasn’t even sure if I was going to the funeral. I don’t know how I can face that bastard since he died while trying to kill me. And since I am basically responsible for his death.
Kayden kept looking at me strangely and I was starting to wonder if he already knew that. Did he know the events of that night? That I drove the car into the lake on purpose.
I tried to avoid eye contact with him and I sat through the whole meeting just agreeing with everything.
But when the meeting was over, I was glad to get out of that building and we started heading for the car.
“Skylar.” Kayden sang out, coming out of the building after us.
“We have to get her home. I think this was a bit much for her.” Jax said.
“Skylar. I am not going to talk to you through these guys. I would like to take you to get something to eat. So we can catch up. There’s a coffee shop down the road.” Kayden said.
“I don’t think so.” I said.
“Why not? Because your boyfriends don’t want you to.”
“They don’t tell me what to do. I do what I want. I don’t want to go with you because as far as I’m concerned, you’re no better than dad. And I know that you know how bad he was.” I said.
“Maybe I’m not the same guy.” He said.
“You’re all the same. I’ll see ya later.” I said, getting in the car. And the guys got in the car with me and we drove off. Leaving him standing on the sidewalk.
As soon as we got home I went inside and straight up the stairs to my room without speaking to anyone and I closed my door and put my bag on the floor.
I laid on the bed, staring at the ceiling when someone knocked on the door.
“Yeah.” I sang out. So it opened and Jax walked into my room and closed the door behind him.
He sat on the side of my bed and I smiled.
“This almost feels like old times.” I said. But he had to think about it for a moment.
“That afternoon I snuck into your room by climbing up the vines.” He said.
“Yeah.” I said.
“Well, I would have loved to keep that going.” Jax said.
“Hey, can I ask you something?” I asked, rolling on my side to face him.
“Sure.”
“Who shot that guy in the kitchen?”
“William did. He was pissed because Lucas couldn’t do it. It was his uncle so he didn’t want to kill him.”
“Wow. If it was me, I would have.” I said.
“Yeah. I gathered that after seeing you two together today.” He said. And I chuckled.
“I hadn’t seen that bastard in years. I can’t believe he showed up for this.”
“Well, at least you didn’t have to plan the funeral.” He said.
“Yeah. If it was me I would have told them to cremate him and throw the ashes in the trash.” I said.
Jax laid down next to me and interlocked his fingers with mine.
“And I don’t doubt that at all.” He said, kissing the back of my hand.
“Those cleaners that came in to clean the kitchen after they got the body out. I recognised their voices.” I said.
“What?” He asked, shocked.
“Dad used the same people. I didn’t want them to know that I was here. I was terrified all night that they were going to find out that I was here.” I explained. And he finally understood my catatonic state that night.
It wasn’t really the dead body in the kitchen. I’ve seen plenty of them. It was the live people that came in afterwards that I was terrified of. So he put his arm around me and pulled me closer to comfort me. Now that he knew the truth, it made a whole lot more sense to him.
