CHAPTER 106

I could tell straight away that the guys were uncomfortable with my grandparents here, so I took them to the veranda and the guys sat with them while I went to make coffee in the kitchen.
“When was the last time you saw them?” Harry asked, walking into the kitchen.
“I don’t even remember. It’s been years. I know that they were told dad died. But they never reached out to me when it happened.”
“Did they know about the abuse?”
“I can’t answer that. I don’t know. Which is why I know I can’t trust them until they prove it.” I said. And he nodded his head.
He carried the tray out the front for me and we all sat out the front on the veranda and my nan and pop were talking to Jax and Lucas, but they looked really nervous.
Probably because Jax and Lucas were exuding their dominance and proving that this was their territory so they better check themselves before they try anything.
“Well Skylar, you’re looking really great. A lot healthier than the last time we saw you.” Pop said.
“Yeah. I don’t remember when that was.” I said, boldly. I wasn’t going to sugarcoat anything.
If there’s a chance that they knew what was going on and they didn’t do anything to stop it, then I was going to give them the slightest satisfaction of me being nice to them.
“It was a few years ago. We’re sorry that we didn’t stay in touch. You know how your father was. I mean, if he didn’t want us around then we weren’t allowed around.” Nan said.
“Is that what you need to tell yourself to make yourself feel better?” I asked.
“Please Skylar. We’re trying to talk to you civilly. You could at least meet us halfway.” pop said.
“Okay. Did you know about what he was doing to me?” I asked.
I could tell that they weren’t expecting that question as their facial expressions changed to look more guilty and they looked at each other before they turned back to me.
“We suspected. But we needed more than that if we were ever going to do anything.” Pop said.
“All you had to do was look. You would have found it. He didn’t hide it.” I said.
“We learnt a long time ago not to get into Jack’s business. We saw what happened to people who crossed him. And we didn’t want to end up the same way.” Nan said.
“So, you were sure that he was going to do that to his own parents?” Jax asked.
“We didn’t know what he was capable of.” Pop said.
I sat there leaning back on the seat looking around at the guys and all of their eyes were fixed on my grandparents. They were sizing them up. Trying to find out if they were telling the truth. Trying to see if they were a threat to me or not.
And I could tell that none of them could tell what my nan and pop were up to. If this was a friendly visit or if they are here for other reasons.
“So, I see you’ve started making a different life for yourself. I mean, you look really great.” Nan said.
“Yeah. I’m actually able to take care of myself here.” I said.
“And these guys are all taking care of you?” Pop asked.
“What are you asking?” Harry snapped. Causing my pop to jump a little.
“Well, I was just asking if you are taking care of her.” Pop asked.
“You’re wanting to know if I’m sleeping with them? If I was, it’s none of your business. And if I’m not, it’s none of your business.” I said.
“Alright. That’s fair enough.” Pop said.
“Is there a reason why you’re here?” Lucas asked.
Nan and Pop were getting really uncomfortable under their intense gazes and I saw Nan reach over and hold Pop’s hand. She was definitely getting nervous.
I guess this isn’t what they expected to walk into when they found me.
I sat there trying to wrack my brain and think of the last time I actually saw these people. I mean, it’s been a long time but I can’t actually remember when I saw them last. It was driving me crazy.
I know that there’s something here that I need to remember, but it’s just evading me at the moment.
It feels important and it’s to do with my grandparents, but so much has happened between then and now that I was having trouble remembering what it was.
I felt a hand on my leg which brought me back to reality and Harry was leaning forward, looking at me.
“What?” I asked.
“Are you alright? You spaced out a bit there.” He said.
“Oh yeah. Sorry. I’m just trying to remember something.” I said.
“What?” Jax asked.
“The last time I saw you two.” I said. But Nan and Pop looked at each other before looking back at me like it was a strange question to be fixated on.
“It’s been a while.” Nan said.
“Yeah. You said that. How long?” I demanded. And the guys turned to look at Nan and Pop.
“You were 11.” Pop replied, reluctantly.
********************
Dad never called his parents mom and dad. He always called them by their first names. Olivia and Henry.
I was 11 years old and I was hiding in the cupboard that was just off to the side of the kitchen as I heard my father coming into the kitchen.
“I thought you’d own a bigger house than this by now.” Henry said.
“I don’t want to show off how much money I have. Especially with the IRS sniffing around.” Dad said.
“Are you still with that little piece who calls herself Kitty?” Olivia asked.
“Yeah. She’s still here. For now.” Dad said.
“What about that brother of hers? Is he still sniffing around Skylar?” Henry asked.
“He is. But he’s going to wait until she’s a little older. He thinks going after her at this age is a little gross, even for him.” Dad explained.
“Well, the sooner you get that little bitch out of this house, the better. Her mother was tainted and now she is. She’s just bringing a bad reputation to our name.” Henry said.
“I know. And I’ll be rid of her soon enough. You don’t need to worry about that. Now, if that’s all I have to get to work.” Dad said, leaving the room.
*********************
“Kitty’s brother.” I said.
“What’s that?” Jax asked. And I looked up at Nan and Pop.
“You knew that Kitty’s brother had every intention of taking me as some sort of mail order bride when I got old enough. You told dad to hurry up and get rid of me because I was bringing your family’s name down.” I said.
Nan and Pop looked at each other really nervously.
“Why would you say such a thing?” Pop asked.
“Because I heard you. I was hiding in the broom closet in the kitchen when I heard you coming. I didn’t want any of you to see me because I was afraid dad was in a bad mood.” I explained.
Nan squeezed Pop’s hand even harder and they both looked concerned as the guys started to tense up and look really pissed off about these people being here.
“Skylar. Please, you have to understand…” Henry said.
“Get the hell out and don’t ever come back.” I said, standing up.
They both looked at me like they were offended. How could someone like me be speaking to them like that?
They considered themselves to be important people and I was just trash to them. But that was the 11 year old me. And now I remember that they barely ever spoke to me when I did see them. They only spoke to me when they were giving me an order to clean something. I didn’t care. I remembered now.
“I said to get the fuck out. You’re not welcome here.” I yelled.
The guys stood up and showed that they weren’t backing down either.
So Pop stood up and Nan stayed really close to him, just in case.
“You’re going to regret making an enemy of me.” Pop said. And I smirked at him.
“That’s funny. I was just about to say the same thing to you.” I said.
So they walked off the veranda and we watched them get in the car and leave.
Lucas walked over and kissed me on the side of the face.
“That took a lot of guts.”
“I just got so pissed when I remembered what they said. They wanted dad to sell me to Kitty’s brother.” I said.
“Why did he suddenly give up on you?” Harry asked.
“As far as I know, he didn’t. Not until you guys came into the picture.” I said.
