CHAPTER 9

Jax looked like he remembered exactly where Skylar’s house was and he wasn’t taking it easy on the car at all. He was speeding around corners, going sideways, and running red lights until we finally pulled up outside of a massive two story house.
We got out of the car and looked up at the house and couldn’t believe what we were looking at. It was nothing like what we expected.
I don’t really know what to expect, maybe a broken down piece of crap house. Maybe I was expecting her to be from a lower class of people. It was surreal to see that she was from a really wealthy family.
Jax ran up and started pounding on the door but there was no answer. There was no movement inside.
I started looking around the front of the house. Looking through the windows and checking to see if any were unlocked. It was locked up really tight. All the doors and windows.
I couldn’t see anything inside right now so I went back to the front door where Jax was. Afraid to tell him that I didn’t think anyone was home.
But the three of us had a really uneasy feeling about the whole situation. She wasn’t at school and now she wasn’t answering the door at home.
“Get the fuck away from me.” Skylar yelled from inside the house.
It got all of our attention and Jax started pounding on the door even harder.
Hearing the sound in Skylar’s voice was something completely unexpected. So much suppressed emotions and she started cursing and screaming at the door.
“I am warning you dad. Get the fuck away from me. I will do it. I hate you. I hate everyone. I hate Jax and him pretending like I don’t even exist anymore. I hate all of you.” Skylar yelled, crying at the same time.
Something wasn’t right here. Something was definitely wrong. I could feel it in my bones.
Jax kept knocking on the door trying to soothe Skylar, but it was like she couldn’t hear Jax.
She kept screaming and I stepped away from the front door and walked over to the window that was closest to the door.
I looked inside and Skylar started walking a little more towards the front door in the foyer area of the house and she was waving around a gun.
“Oh fuck. She’s got a gun.” I yelled, running back to the front door. “She’s waving it around but she did have it pointed at her own head.” I added.
Jax started panicking and in a split second decision he stood back and he kicked in the front door.
It took a couple of times because of the locks on the door, but the door started to give way and as we all ran inside the house Skylar was still waving the gun around.
She was crying and had fresh bruises on her face, but as soon as we got inside the gun accidentally discharged.
Skylar staggered a little before she fell to the ground.
Jax ran over to try and catch her head before it hit the marble floors, but he was too late.
Skylar laid on the ground, her eyes closed and a trickle of blood coming from the side of her head.
Jax quickly took off his shirt and he pressed it to the side of her forehead and Lucas rushed over and put his head towards her mouth to see if she was breathing.
I grabbed my phone out of my pocket and I called for an ambulance immediately.
I told them as much as I could and the person on the other end of the phone told us what to do to stop the bleeding and what to do if she stopped breathing.
It was complete chaos and when the ambulance arrived the paramedics took over but we all insisted that we were going in the ambulance with her. Whether they liked it or not.
They knew that they didn’t have any time to argue so they just let us go with her and they rushed Skylar to the hospital.
Jax was right beside her, holding her hand the whole way.
Jax looked back at the house once as we were leaving and it looked like he wanted to burn the whole place down.
I wouldn’t be surprised if he actually came back and did that.
“She was yelling that stuff at her dad. Did you hear her? She’s never going back to that fucking house.” Jax said. And Lucas and I both agreed. She was never going back there.
“Jax. We’ve got plenty of room at our house. She can stay with us. You don’t need to worry about her anymore. She’ll be safe with us.” I assured him and he nodded his head.
I knew that he was trying to stay strong in front of us, but seeing Skylar like that, it was really getting to him. He had a look of guilt on his face. But I wasn’t sure why. I think it had something to do with what they talked about under the bleachers. We pulled him away from talking to her and then we didn’t see her again.
I know Jax well enough to know that’s probably why he feels so guilty. Because he wasn’t there for her. He left. And she had to come home to whatever was waiting for her.
“Guys. Do you think it’s a good idea if we bring her back to our place? I mean, you know what I mean.” Lucas said.
“We’re partly to blame for this happening. Don’t try and tell me that we’re not. We’re taking care of her from now on. Alright.” Jax snapped. And Lucas shut his mouth after that. He knew not to mess with Jax when he was in this mood. And he wasn’t wrong. I think our actions at school did play a part in this.
When she saw Jax she was probably expecting something a little more than what she got from her old friend. And when she didn’t get it, she probably thought that he had abandoned her as well.
But there was one question burning on my mind that I knew I couldn’t bring up with Jax.
What if she didn’t want to come and live with us?
But after seeing her in the cafeteria with her clothes torn and seeing the scars all over her body. Especially that one on her stomach that looked more like a fucking brand, it made me want to kill the son of a bitch that did it.
How could anyone treat another person like that? Her dad was going to get everything that was coming to him. I knew that Jax was going to see to it and we were going to stand behind him with whatever decision he came to.
I didn’t understand it though. I mean, I only met this girl for the first time yesterday. And we didn’t even really meet. So, why was I so pissed off about this?
I know that I was definitely curious about the scars and especially that one on her stomach, but I didn’t understand why it filled me with so much rage.
There was definitely a story behind it and I was compelled to find out more about her.
