CHAPTER 47
JAX’S POV - PRESENT DAY
I was trying so desperately to escape these two men that had me on the ground but every attempt I made was met with another blow to the face or kick to the stomach. And it wasn’t just them two anymore. There were more.
They had already been inside. Probably looking for Harry and Lucas. But since they aren’t here, they’ve come back outside and I can see Skylar through the trees. She’s being dragged to a car.
Just as a set of headlights came on, I could see her father standing in the middle of it.
He’s the one behind this. He went to all this trouble to get her back.
I had to get to her.
I jumped up and I took a swing at one of the men and I punched him straight in the face, causing him to fall back on the ground and I turned to hit the other one but he pulled a gun and pointed it right in my face.
Suddenly a gunshot rang out.
I closed my eyes, waiting for the pain to come. Waiting for something to happen. But it didn’t. I opened my eyes and the guy that was standing in front of me slowly fell to his knees and then down on the ground.
It seems like everything went in slow motion after that.
I saw Harry and Lucas come running around from the side of the house and they were fighting off every man that was in their way, barreling through them like they weighed nothing. But most of the guys looked like they didn’t want to engage. They weren’t actually firing back at any of us.
The rest of the men quickly dispersed, running to their cars and speeding away from the house knowing that I wasn’t alone anymore. And they weren’t expecting Harry and Lucas to interrupt and actually shoot one of them. I guess they underestimated what we were willing to do. Especially when it came to Skylar.
But lucky for them, they took the injured guy with them. They probably figured that we would be able to ID him and finish them all off for what they’ve done.
Which is a very fair assumption. That is something that we would do.
They all took off in different directions, obviously trying to confuse us so we didn’t know who to follow. But they underestimated me.
Harry and Lucas raced over to check that I was alright. They saw all the cuts and bruises on me but that was about it. I would have a few cuts and bruises, maybe a couple of broken ribs but nothing to worry about. And nothing I haven’t had before. I could definitely put up with this.
When I assure them that I’m fine Lucas pulls out his phone to make a call.
“What the hell happened? Where’s Skylar?” Harry asked. I could see the panic and fear written all over his face. I had never seen Harry look like this before. He was terrified for Skylar right now.
“It was her dad. He did all of this. He’s got her.” I said, trying to catch my breath.
Lucas was on the phone for just a few seconds when he hung up.
“I’ve got our people tracking their location now. Since they all went in different directions, we need to split up. Harry, you and Jax take his car to track Skylar’s dad’s car. The tracker is going to your phone now. I’ll go after those assholes in black.” Lucas said.
Harry and I looked at each other cautiously. We didn’t think it was a good idea for Lucas to go after them alone. They didn’t engage us at the house, but that doesn’t mean they won’t if Lucas is chasing them. We don’t know who they are but we do know that they are willing to help kidnap someone. So they could be capable of a lot more.
“Don’t worry. I won’t engage. I’ll just see where they go. We’ll go after them after we get Skylar back.” Lucas insisted.
So we agreed on that plan and Harry and I ran to my car and we peeled out of the driveway and headed down the road in the direction that Skylar left.
Harry was looking at his phone and he was telling me where to go.
There was nothing in sight as we traveled down these dark quiet streets. Nothing but the sound of my engine as I sped through them.
We couldn’t see a car or anything up ahead of us which didn’t make any sense. We weren’t that far behind them. How could they just disappear?
Harry was directing me to a specific location.
“The signals stopped. They’ve stopped.” Harry said.
“Where?” I asked.
“It’s just up here.” He said, pointing to the side of the road.
I drove up to where the signal was and I pulled over by the side of the road.
We got out of the car and were walking around the long bushes that lined the road. The grass that is severely overgrown because no one ever tends to it.
“I don’t get it. There’s nothing here. But the signal says that they are right here.” Harry yells.
But I didn’t say anything. I started looking around at the trees and the vegetation that we were wandering through and it was really familiar to me. I knew I’d seen it before. But then it suddenly hit me.
The fucking lake.
“Skylar.” I yelled, running through the long grass and bushes until I got to the abandoned playground.
Harry was following right behind me and we were faced with the lake that was right in front of us.
“SKYLAR! SKYLAR!” I screamed out, hoping for a response.
“What makes you think she’s here?” Harry asked.
“This is where we met. Right here at this lake.” I said.
“Alright. Then where is she? Where would she be?” Harry asked.
I looked at the lake and remembered that fateful day. If I hadn’t seen Skylar jump into the lake, she would have died that day. She was determined to die.
I started walking closer to the water’s edge when Harry suddenly understood.
It was too dark to see in the water but my heart sank at the thought of her being in there.
“SKYLAR!” Harry screamed again.
“Jax.” A faint voice called out.
So I spun around, looking in the dark for Skylar. But it was too dark.
“Jax.” Skylar said again, stumbling out of the treeline.
