Chapter 15: Hidden truth
Davis Pov
As I lay on my bed, I kept telling myself Olivia was not telling me something. My thoughts are also filled with Marcus. I slowly got out of bed, my heart pounding.
I opened my door slowly, I recognized Olivia's voice. I tried to listen intently. I followed the sound of the voice. She was speaking in a hush tone so she wouldn't be heard.
“Sure, I'll take care of it, we're still dealing with Vincent. I think those two must have done something together in the past. They must have been close to each other.”
She paused for a while, probably she was listening to what the person over the phone had to say.
“I'll find out more about him, because he's too wealthy and I don't think he got that in a proper way.” She said, in a low tone.
I knew Olivia was up to something since the day she stepped her foot into my house.
“Okay ma,am, but i don't know why Marcus had risked his life for him, I'll go see him tomorrow and ask him why he had done that.”
“So this is really her intention.” I muttered to myself.
“I know nothing about his parents but I'll find out soon enough.” she said.
I quickly left for my room when I discovered she was coming out from her hiding place.
I sighed heavily, closing the door behind me. “At least I'm relieved, her intention in this house is not to kill, because I was already becoming suspicious that she killed the bodyguard we found on the couch.” I said, to myself.
“But why will she think my wealth was from another source, she probably thinks I'm doing an illegal business.” I rubbed my temples.
I thought I would have confronted her while listening to her conversation with the agency but I thought it was best I left quietly to see what she was up to next.
Her aim in my house is to investigate everything about me and deliver every information she gets to the agent. And the fact that she thought Marcus' action was not part of the plan, got me more worried.
I tried calming myself down, thinking that I'm overreacting. I knew my wealth was from a good source so that wasn't bordersome to me. But I couldn't let my guard down around her.
My decision was to play it cool, I'll pretend I heard nothing like that. There was nothing for her to uncover that would put me in danger so I wasn't worried.
I took a deep breath, trying to focus on the present situation. I believe Olivia didn't kill th3 bodyguard, so who would have done that in the house? I tried to think who was capable of doing something like that but I found none. I have worked with my workers for years and I trust them.
My concern was about Emily, it took her a long time to recover when my wife, her mother, passed away. It was a hard time for me to bring her up alone. She had refused to cope with any nannies I had picked for her but Olivia's case was different. “There is definitely something about her.”
I took a deep breath as my mind raced with doubts and thoughts. So the agencies think my wealth is gotten in the wrong way?
I rolled on my bed, grabbed my laptop close to my bed. I began to search for Olivia. I thought back to the day of the bodyguard murder, I had been in the office, while Olivia claimed to have gone to pick Emily from school while Rachel left the office to get something and other workers also claimed they saw nothing. “Someone among these four, is lying.” I said, writing four names in the sheet.
“But is it possible Olivia is involved in the murder? The person who killed my wife is connected to the death of the bodyguard.” I said, ticking a name.
I knew Olivia had been acting strange, she has been lurking around the house as if she's searching for something. “Could Olivia have been involved in the murder after all? I don't think so.” I shook my head.
I believe she was with Emily and Emily would have said something to me if she had suspected her in any way. I tried to use that as an excuse that she's not responsible for the murder.
I decided not to involve the police in the case, instead I'll find the killer myself. I still have to put my eyes on Olivia for the safety of Emily, until I know every single thing about her.
I grew deeper into my research, my curiosity kept me going and I stumbled on something, I scrolled back. It was a news article from several years ago, it was reporting about a scandal, the image of some group of women displayed on the screen.
I kept reading, searching for more information. To my surprise while scanning the image I saw a familiar face. “Isn't this Maria? Nah this might just be a resemblance, it's not possible that Maria will be amongst these people.” I muttered.
As I kept scrolling through the article, I saw a name that made my blood run cold. I wasn't surprised. It was Vincent. The same Vincent who has tried to kill me. Now with Vincent's name mentioned in the article and the resemblance of Maria I was confused.
“Nah, this can't be her.” I believed it wasn't her. Maria can't be involved in things like this, she has worked for me for years and I think I know her too well.
“But if this is really Maria, what does she have to do with Vincent, what do they want from me and what do they have to do with each other?” I said to myself.
My mind was reeling with connection. “Vincent, Maria.” No it's not possible, I tried to believe that.
All I needed to keep doing was to continue digging, to uncover the truth.
