Chapter 41: Search of Answers

Davis Pov

I was still having an argument with Lisa. She had proposed that I get married to her this week. “I need time, the things at stake now are what we should concentrate on.”

“We could just do a small wedding, it won't change anything.” Lisa said.

I didn't know what to tell her anymore. She keeps insisting that I get married to her or she'll leave. “I understand how desperate you want this but we need to focus on the current things at hand, and discuss things later when things are right. We don't need to rush this, we both love each other and that is the main goal.”

“Are you doing this because you feel your daughter won't be in support of us getting married, babe you should know how much I need this, If you do love me keys get married then.” Lisa said.

“Don't you listen? I've explained this to you over and over again, why are you desperate, or Is there something you are not telling me?” I asked. I could see doubt in her face when I asked that question. “I'm talking to you, are you hiding anything from me?”

“Why will you think I will ever keep anything secret from you huh? Don't you trust me?” She asked.

“Then fine, let's leave this discussion for now and focus on the present situation. Your urgency to get married is only making me suspicious, all we need to do is strengthen our relationship before we get married and I want you to build a relationship with Emily, she needs to like you.”

“But I've been trying to get close to her, it's not working.” Lisa said.

“I told you before that it won't be easy, you can't just give up trying. You need to keep trying.” I said.

“The way you say it is as if you don't know your daughter, she's stubborn.” Lisa spat.

“Nah, don't say that about her, and you referring to her as just my daughter means you aren't ready to take responsibility.” I said.

“Come on, that's not what I mean, I'll see what I can do to get close to her.” Lisa said,

“But please if she says you should leave you should, when she's calm you can talk to her, I hate to see her cry.” I said.

“Fine.” She said, “I will do as you say.” But I knew she was angry, she wasn't ready to take responsibility either.

We sat in an uncontrollable silence. I remembered Rebecca saying her mother was rushed to the hospital, since then I haven't seen her. “Hope everything is fine?” I muttered.

I sent her a message. Just then Lisa's phone rang. She hesitated before picking up the phone. “That's not a problem, I'll take care of it.” She said with a tone dripping in secrecy.

Her eyes met mine as she hung the call. I wondered who she was talking to.

“Who was that on the phone?” I asked.

“And since when do you start asking about who I talk to on the phone, well he's just a friend.” She said,

“Just a friend?” I asked.

“Yeah, my close friend.” She said,

“That should be Julie then, because I can remember that is the only best friend you have.” I said, my voice dripping in suspicion.

The way she avoided my gaze and how her voice trembled. I knew she was lying and I knew there was no way I would get married to her with her being secretive.

“You need to tell me the truth, who were you talking to?” I asked again.

Her eyes flashed with guilt. “It was Julie, you know, the only close friend I have.” She said, her voice barely audible.

“Okay, so why that look on your face if you were talking to Julie, I know you two communicate in a lively way, it hard to believe you were talking to her in that tone.” I felt a wave of anger because I knew she was lying.

“It's been long we met, she just wants us to catch up.” she said, avoiding eye contact with me.

“Okay then, I'll be going with you.” I said.

“What? Nah, just catching fun alone, you won't be coming with me.” her face hardened.

“Don't forget, you're my fianceé and we haven't gone for adventure and more so let's just use that as an opportunity.” I said.

“You're saying all of this because you don't trust me Davis and I won't be spending the rest of my life with someone who doesn't trust me.” She said, in a venomous tone.

The room was silent again. “Daddy, I heard you shouting, is everything alright?” Emily said, walking towards me.

“Oh, sweetie, just talking to Aunty here.” I said.

“Aunty?” Lisa said, “Is that the best thing you can use to describe me to your daughter?”

I signed. “Yeah, you said my daughter, so I think that is the best I can use to describe you.”

Lisa hissed walking away.

“Nah, you don't need to be angry, I didn't mean it that way.” I said

“Dad are you both fighting?” Emily asked, looking at me with curious eyes.

I tried to think of a way to explain to her. “It's nothing sweetie, what about Olivia?”

“I've not seen her since this morning, I thought you knew where she was.” Emily said, with a tiny voice.”

“Have you checked her room to see if she's there?” I asked.

“Yes Dad and I asked Maria she said she has no idea where she was.”

I called for Maria. “Have you seen Olivia?”

“I haven't seen her since the morning breakfast, I had thought she was with Emily.” Maria said, I could see the stains of flour on her dress, she must have been busy in the kitchen.

“We played after breakfast together and she told me she wanted to get her phone. I didn't see her after that.” Emily said.

“Wait, I heard her mentioning something like Rebbeca was finding some funds for her mom's surgery.” Maria said.

“Sugary? Nobody told me anything like this.”
