Chapter 29: Stepmother's Arrival

Olivia's Pov

I followed Emily as she stormed out of the living room. Davis signed, “wait.” He said, rubbing his temples, “can you please try to talk some sense into her, I knew it would be hard for her to agree to it.” he said, with a pleading eyes.

I didn't know what to do. It was as if part of me wanted to confront her but another part of me was hurting. “I'll try,” I said, before leaving.

As soon as I got to the room, I met Emily on her bed, she was crying, “Just leave.”

“Just listen Emily,” I said, trying to sound calm.

But Emily stood up from her bed, she opened the door as she ushered me out of her room angrily.

I stood helpless as I stood there as Emily slammed the door behind me. All I could hear was sobs and my heart ached for her. I knew I had to do everything to console her. I knocked gently again hoping she would open the door. “Emily, you know I'm always here for you, talk to me.” I waited patiently, hoping she'll open the door but she didn't.

I had never seen Emily like this before. She felt so fragile, she felt like her world was falling apart. The thought of her hurting was unbearable. I took a deep breath, knocking again. “I know you're upset, don't shut me out, open the door.”

The sob had stopped and I wondered if she had fallen asleep, but then there was a faint whisper. “Go away.” She said,

“You know how I care about you, I can't bear the pain seeing you hurt like this, I won't leave this place till you open the door.”

I felt I had lost her, and just when I was about to give up, she opened the door and I pushed myself off the wall. She stood in the doorway, her eyes were puffy and red.

I walked into the room, closing the door behind me. “You don't have to cry Emily, I know it's hard to accept someone else as your mother, but that's what Daddy wants, that is his happiness and you should be happy for him. Don't you want your Father to be happy?” I asked.

“I do want him to be happy, but I don't want her.” Emily said.

“Come on Emily, let's be patient to see if she's a good person and a match for father, she might be just what you want.” I said, trying to sound convincing.

“I wanted you Olivia, I thought Dad likes you too.” She said,

“What are you talking about?” I asked her.

“You can't pretend you don't know what I'm talking about, I heard you and Rebecca arguing about that. I know you love my Dad.” Emily said.

I didn't know how I was going to deny that. “Nah Emily, you're mistaken, I just care about him that's all. I want what's best for you and him.”

She looked at me, she wasn't convinced enough. She knew I was lying, she was a smart girl.

Just then there was a knock on the door, it was Davis. “Can I come in?” He asked

“No Dad, just leave.” Emily said, her voice so immediate.

When Davis came in, he sat on the bed next to Emily. “Your stepmother is here and I want you to behave yourself and welcome her well.”

“I'm not going to do that.” Emily said.

“Nah, you should do as your dad says, okay?” I said.

Davis Pov

“Olivia, leave us for a few minutes.” I said.

She walked out, leaving just I and Emily. “I know this is difficult for you but you need to know that Daddy needs to be happy. I know you feel I'm replacing your mom but you need to know that she's always with us in our memories and heart. I'm just trying to find happiness again and you should be happy for me and I'm sure Lisa cares about both you and I and I feel she'll be good and perfect for our family.”

After all of the discussion with Emily she finally agreed to my decision. “She'd better be a nice person.” Emily said, as she followed me downstairs.

On getting to the living room. She met my girlfriend and soon to be wife. I introduced Emily to Lisa and Lisa to Emily.

Lisa got up from the couch happy to see Emily, she had wanted to hug her but Emily pushed her arms away.

Lisa's smile faltered for a moment as she was rebuffed by Emily's cold attitude. I knew she wasn't happy but she tried to cover up. I had told her it won't be easy to win Emily.

Emily was just looking at Lisa, I noticed the tension between them, it was just as if she was observing Lisa's appearance. She was trying so hard to observe the new person that was about entering into our lives.

“I don't like you.” Emily said to Lisa, her voice filled with a hint of vulnerability. “I don't know you either.” she added.

“I don't know you too, that's why I'm here, we'll get to know each other well and end up being friends.” Lisa said.

“Did you say friends?” Emily said,

Lisa smiled. “Yes friends and we can be more than that, I'm part of the family now. I know your dad here loves you and I'm ready to give you that love also.”

Emily smiled, nodding her head, without saying a word. And I tried to convey that everything will be fine.

But looking at Lisa, there was doubt in her eyes. But it wasn't the right time to question her. Looking at both Lisa and Emily. I only hoped I had not made a mistake. I hope I wasn't putting Emily in a dangerous situation.
Looking at Lisa, her smile seems to hide a lot of things she can't say. Emily sensed my unease. She tapped me. “What are you thinking of Dad?” She asked.

I forced a smile out. “It's nothing sweetie, I'll leave you here with Lisa while you both get to know each other better.”

I left for my room, hoping they would get along.
