Chapter 61: Reality
Davis Pov
I kept staring at the image Olivia had sent to me over and over again. “YmSir are you sure you don't know this face?” Rebbeca asked.
“I'm sure I don't.” I said.
When I stared at the picture on the screen again a memory flashed back. “Nah.” I muttered, shaking my head trying to clear the cobwebs. “What is it?” Rebecca asked.
I sighed. “It's nothing, I'm just being paranoid.”
“You need to concentrate and focus.” She said, her voice brought me back to reality.
I just nodded as I tried pushing that feeling aside. And to my surprise the memory flashed back. I couldn't tell what it was exactly but I know that woman's face, her blue eyes.
“I know this face Rebbeca but that's all I can remember, I don't know where I know I just face from.” I said,
“And that is all you can remember about her?” Rebecca said, her eyes widened in shock.
“That's all I can remember.” I said.
“You need to close your eyes now, the image of this strange woman should be the only thing in your mind.”
I sighed, closed my eyes as she had said but nothing was being remembered.
“You can't even remember where you met this face?” She asked.
Olivia's Pov
“Are you sure you guys didn't fail to carry something in the murder scene?” I stared at the picture of the bodyguard and the knife stained with blood.
“something is not here, something is definitely missing, we need to review the footage again.” Caleb said, with a firm voice.
We went through the footage carefully. “Hold on,” I said,my heart skipped a bit. “Rewind back.”
As he rewound the footage there was a figure, it wasn't clear enough. The figure was lurking in the background.
“Who do you think this person might be?” I asked.
“I have no idea, let's keep checking so we might find out.” His eyes widened.
Going through the image my blood ran cold. “This is Maria, what was she doing there the day this figure appeared.”
“What does it mean then?” Caleb asked, his face turned ashen.
“Does it mean Maria is involved?” I muttered, feeling a wave of dread wash.
The room fell silent, no sound was heard apart from the heavy breathing of Caleb and I.
“I think you need to go and confront Maria, you don't have to tell Davis about this particular finding until we're sure.” Caleb said.
As soon as I turned to leave, the prosecutor which Davis had instructed me to work with arrived, holding a file in his hands.
Edward stood in the doorway waiting for me to welcome him in.
I smiled. “Welcome prosecutor, I've been waiting. I'm on my way to get some evidence on this particular case we are working on, my brother there will show you what we've found.” I said, pointing at Caleb.
Edward nodded without saying a word. I wondered if he was dumb, couldn't he talk.
As I left the door, I got into my car, I couldn't shake off the feeling of Maria in the footage. “Is she really involved?” I muttered.
I drove to a house close to Davis mansion. There was a car parked there. I have to see the owner of the car. The young lady walked out and we exchanged pleasantries and she agreed to give me the memory card in her car. Her car was parked close to Davis' house so I thought we could see who walked into the house on that particular day.
I got into my car, I then inserted the memory card in my phone. I was shocked to see a figure with a mask jumping the fence around Davis mansion. I wondered who was that
I had thought it was just one person but to my surprise two more people emerged still with a mask on. Their movement was deliberate and swift. The figures stood round the garden and after a while I saw the bodyguard who was murdered coming towards their direction, he was looking round making sure he wasn't seen. This was becoming complicated, then what is Maria doing in the fortagDavis had given to me? I muttered. “It seems like he hasn't seen it.”
I decided to go to Davis mansion to figure out some things. I got there but everything still looks the same. I decided to go check on Emily since I was already there. She might decide to see me this time. As I got to the hallway it was quiet and the front door was slightly ajar. “Is anyone here?” But there was no response.
I pushed Emily's door open, she was in there, her door wasn't closed. “Hey dear, I…..” I wasn't able to complete my statement as Emily cut me shut. “Are you home alone?” I asked but she ignored me.
I sat properly in the bed but she asked me to get up. I did as she wanted. I squatted close to her, “You don't need to be like this, I told you how sorry I am, I really miss you.”
“Do you know how you made my dad feel huh? You hurt him badly, I wanted my dad to get married to you but how I'm I going to convince him to do so when you deceived us, you lied about your true identity.” Emily said, her eyes cold.
“And I told you I didn't mean any of that.” I held her hand.
“I know you don't.” Emily said, hugging me. I was finally relieved.
“You forgive me?” I asked.
“Yes of course, but you have to come back.” Emily said.
“Sweetie, you know I was working before I came here, I can't just leave my job.” I said.
“But you can go to work from here. Please don't say no.” Emily said.
I signed. “Stop making decisions without your Dad concept okay? I have no right to walk in here and live permanently while your dad didn't permit me to.”
“I will talk to him about it, you don't have to worry about it.” She said,
I smiled. “I have a house Emily and I'm doing well, I can't abandon all of that. I wish you could understand.”
“If you don't come I will be angry.” Emily said.
I didn't know what to say to Emily. I was happy she had forgiven me and she decided to talk to me but I couldn't do what she wanted.
“I know you want me to stay Emily, but I have a life of my own now.” I said. “I have my family, I have my Job and friends and I can't just move in here to stay with you.”
Emily was not interested in anything I had to say. “We are family.”
I smiled. “I know Emily, but come to think of it, what about I come every weekend to pay a visit.”
Emily finally agreed that I'd come to visit every weekend. “But your dad needs to know about it.”
“Sure I will tell him.” She said,
I sighed. “Alright sweetie, I will be leaving now.”
Emily frowned her face. “That's so soon.”
“Don't forget, we agreed only on weekends.” I said.
