Chapter 26: Baffled Relationship
Davis Pov
“Hey you've not been talking to me much lately.” Lisa said. “We've been together for one year now, why don't I come live in your house?”
“I don't think that is a good idea.” I said.
“I'm not going to listen to you this time, you can't continue to see me in secret, I need to get along with Emily before we get married.” Lisa said.
I smiled. “Hold on Lisa, moving in with me it's not as easy as you think, it's a big step to take, I really care about you.”
“That's not an excuse Davis, you've been saying that for months now, I won't listen to you this time.” She said,
“You need to take this slowly Lisa.”
“Did you say slowly? We've been together for a year, and I think that is slow enough, I need to see your daughter so we can flow along with each other. Stop making excuses.” she said.
“You need to understand.” I said,
“I don't understand anything you're saying, why are you not willing to take our relationship to the next level or are you afraid to commit to me.”
“It's not as simple as you think Lisa, It will be hard for Emily to accept you and as for commiting with you, you should know I care deeply about you.”
She laughed. “The only time I remember you care about me is when you want to have sex with me, come on Alex I know you better than you think.”
“I love you, but..” she cut me off.
“But what, Davis? You are not sure I'm the one, are you just wasting my time, it's been years since your wife passed away, you can't tell me you're still grieving, you can't tell me you can't move on Davis.”
“That's not it, all I'm saying is that we need to take things slowly. We don't need to rush anything and end up losing what we have together.”
Her expression turned cold. “You keep saying what we have, we have nothing Davis, all we do and share together is having sex, you enjoy a secret relationship that you're afraid to show to the world and then a love you're afraid to fight for using your daughter as an excuse.”
I knew she was right, I was beginning to lose interest in her, I was scared to tell her, I didn't know how to overcome those fears.
I watched her turn away, I knew I had been using Emily as an excuse, I couldn't deny them, I was afraid to confront my feelings. “Wait Lisa.” I said
“I can't continue waiting for you to figure out what you want, you've kept me in the shadows to be just your secret lover, I thought you would change, I thought I would receive a ring on my finger but I know better now.”
I've been afraid to let go of my past, those words she said to me made me realize I need to give her a chance. I closed the distance between us. Taking a deep breath. “I'm sorry for neglecting you, I've just been afraid to move on, I know I've been using that as an excuse these days to keep you at arm's length.”
She looked at me with a hint of skepticism. “Let's try, I want to fight for us, no more excuses.” I smiled.
She looked at me for a while, searching for any sign of insincerity. She hugged me tightly, placed her lips on mine, kissing me slowly.
I felt a wave of relief, but I didn't know how Emily would react to this. But I pushed that aside, savoring the taste of Lisa's lip. After a while, she pulled back. “I can't wait to finally meet Emily. But do you think she will like me?” She asked.
“I can't tell for now, I'll explain everything to her.”
“But are you sure she will accept me?” Lisa asked.
“Oh now I'll say you're asking too many questions. When you get there you'll find out yourself.”
“Well, I'm ready to face whatever lays ahead as long as I'm with you.” She said, her voice filled with determination.
“You don't need to bother about anything, we'll face it together.” I smiled, reassuring her.
As we hugged tightly, I couldn't shake off the feeling that I was moving into a war zone. I know about Rebecca having feelings for me and I'm yet to discover if Olivia does. There's a way she looks at me that I can't really explain.
Lisa's eyes sparkled with excitement. “So can I move in tomorrow?” She asked.
“Sure, anytime convenient for you.” Standing there, I was unsure if I was ready for the fallout. “I should think positively.” I muttered.
We had a good time together and I headed home. I drove in the lonely street before getting to my house. I wasn't sure anyone was still awake when I got home. The body guards were the only ones I could see.
I walked to Emily's room, she was already asleep. She had not covered herself with her blanket, so I did that for her but while I was about to leave she called me back. “Dad.”
“Yes, sweetie, I didn't want to disturb you.” I said.
“I haven't seen Olivia today, is she fine?” She asked.
“I'll go check up on her now, she's not feeling too well.”
I turned to leave but Emily stopped me again. “Is she in trouble?” Her voice was filled with concern.
“Why do you think she's in trouble kiddo?” I asked.
Emily sat on her bed. “I saw Rebecca arguing with her today, Emily looked really upset, Rebecca slapped her but Emily didn't say a word.”
I couldn't believe that things had escalated between both women. “I'll take care of that tomorrow.” I said. “Just get some sleep, don't bother yourself about that.”
I left Emily's room, the thought of bringing Lisa home filled my mind. I made my way to Olivia's room to ask what had been going on.
