Friday, August 2nd Pt. 3
It only takes a few short minutes for Deven to come back into my office. Fortunately it’s all the time I need to reign in my emotions. He knocks lightly just before he enters.
“Is everything alright?” I ask lightly.
“I got Clay distracted with the game Cody is playing. Sheila and I have spoken of letting him sleep in our room for a few nights until we know better how he’s going to do without Colton. Even though he imprinted nicely to us he still got very close to Cole.”
“I believe Clay is the reason Cole stayed as long as he did.” I speak truthfully exactly what is going through my head. “I just wish that Martina had managed to get what we needed for him a little sooner.” I state sadly as I slowly spin the fleece and leather strapped gps bracelet in my hand.
“Is that for him?” Deven notices it easily.
“It arrived at the post office yesterday morning but didn’t make it to my desk until today.”
He nods.
“Honestly, I can’t blame Tina. Even though I sought her out I was hesitant to divulge much information out of fear for him.”
“Fear of what?”
“That she would force me to relinquish him to the council. That he would be jailed as a feral and not receive the therapy that he needs. That he deserves.”
“Would they do that?”
“I don’t know.” I sit back in my chair with a sigh. “It took a week straight of talking with her nightly before I let those fears slip. She understood immediately and reassured me that wasn’t her intention. True to what Marcy told me while he was in the hospital, they want to reunite him with his mate and Dr. Demetri Black. She told me that ordinarily she couldn’t tell me anything about the ferality request or the protection from torture requests but because she believed this was him she gave me that information. In exchange, without her asking, I sent the results of two of his blood tests. The one we already knew. He’s an alpha. Like me, he's a third or even fourth generation alpha.”
“What was the second one?”
“The DNA test I asked about.”
“You knew when you asked for it that you were going to send it to her?”
“I didn’t know exactly what I was going to do with it. I had high hopes that the council could decode it and match it to wolves in the database. The results were shocking.”
“What did you find out?”
“This is a long way to answer but I think it’s important to share the history.” Deven gives me a nod. “Are you familiar with the northern packs, the Red Fang pack?”
He gives me a snort for a response.
“Who isn’t? The last I heard was the council was researching that pack to make certain they qualify as a pack and not a band of marauders that moved into a piece of land.”
I can’t help but smile at his very real analogy.
“Truth be told, that's how a lot of packs have been formed. The difference is they progress into a civilized society where it would seem Red Fang has taken a step away from that.”
“I imagine so considering the number of rumors going around about the abuse and rape of children. Are you saying he ran from Red Fang?”
The lightbulb has finally gone off.
“Unfortunately, our mystery wolf comes from that pack.” I sigh heavily. “No wonder he was so protective of Clayton.”
Deven is as flabbergasted as I was when I found out.
“They say that true good only rises from the worst moral failings but I need to explain quite a bit for you to understand that meaning.”
He nods his head but remains silent. I can tell I’ve piqued his interest.
“During my phone conversations with Martina, she took me through the lost history of the Red Fang pack, a history that the two previous alphas worked hard to quell the violence that kept rolling over from one alpha to another. Like most packs, the Red Fang pack started as rogues that had banded together as they found like minded wolves to be with. It is unknown if they fought for the land they are currently occupying or if they happened upon unclaimed territory but either way they were the first territory to be found in their area. As the rogues found mates and started having families, the majority of them started longing for the leadership that they had left. It is claimed that an alpha who went rogue stumbled upon the alphaless territory and without a fight, claimed the pack and territory as his, Alpha Anthony Charles Redmen.
His reign was believed to be loose as he had run from abusing parents and was relatively young when he founded the pack. Some documents say he was sixteen, others claim eighteen. Either way, he was essentially a child ruling over grown men and their families. He eventually found his mate, Lola, and had several pups. During the 1950’s werewolf medicine was significantly behind what humans had and out of seven pups only one, a male named Luther, survived to adulthood. Arthur died an early death leaving the pack to Luther in his early twenties. Documents show that Luther had several disabilities that were taken advantage of by the pack members regressing any progress towards humanity that they may have made. After thirty years of being alpha, Luther stepped down handing the reins of leadership to his highly intelligent first born, Archer Dillion Redmen.
Alpha Archer was the first to rule with an iron fist, although for the time frame he was uniquely non abusive. Although the pack still had problems amongst themselves, they had made a huge step forward in becoming a humane, civilized pack. It was Archer’s only son, Renee, that inherited the pack next and continued in his father’s way, ruling with an iron fist. Renee’s mate, Agatha, had a lot of health issues that resulted in her only getting pregnant once. Her only pregnancy was quadruplets consisting of identical twin girls and fraternal twin boys. She went into labor four months early and gave birth to her twin girls. Angeline died at three days and Bridget passed at seven days. Against all odds the doctors stopped her contractions and she stayed pregnant with the boys for six weeks. Charles and Dillion were born on the same day.
Not a lot has been found on the boys’ childhood. It was documented that the council investigated Renee and Agatha numerous times from the time Charles was eight until he turned fourteen as Charles had started telling the school nurse that his father was beating him with the buckle end of the belt. Each investigation turned up the standard disciplinary process of the child’s age in strikes on their bare bottom with an old pliable leather belt. After the second investigation Renee started documenting the reason Charles was in his office every Friday night receiving a spanking. He was quite the terror even then.
Multiple kids were nearly drowned when he threw them in the river. Multiple kids suffered broken bones from him shoving or throwing them from on top of the playground equipment. He was even reported as raping females as early as fourteen years old. His twin, Dillion, didn’t have any of these problems and this was the chosen child to continue the Red Fang reign.
The problem then became naming Dillion as the heir according to some very old council laws. Back then council law mandated that in order for a younger sibling to succeed the older they must be a male with his fated mate and if they’ve been mated for two years she must be pregnant when the heir is coronated next in line.”
“Wow, that is a really old law. I’m glad they relaxed that as a lot of very good alphas wouldn’t be alpha right now if they didn’t.”
“Indeed.” I agree.
“Now, to Dillion’s benefit, Charles didn’t want to be alpha and after five years of trying, Dillion’s mate never got pregnant. Charles had found and claimed his fated mate Sara Mae and in a desperate move to not become alpha he asked if another woman could bare Dillion’s heir. After a through investigation into the laws, the council and their father signed off on the unique plan and during Sara’s next heat cycle, she got pregnant with Dillion’s twins. Notes were made by the council that Dillion reported having to move Sara into the pack house under protective custody because Charles had started beating her regularly. After eight months of his mate smelling like his brother, he simply couldn’t hold his wolf’s jealousy at bay. She gave birth to a healthy boy and girl four months later.
Dillion struggled with the idea of his brother raising his kids but taking them from Sara was not part of the agreed upon plan. Two years later Sara gets pregnant with Charles’s pups and everything goes smoothly. A year after Sara has those pups, Dillion’s mate ends up pregnant with twins. They didn’t know until she was four months along and eight months later they were born. Now I’m at the interesting part of this long story as I know you’re asking what does this have to do with Colton? I know you are as I was asking the same thing.
Two years after Sara had her second set of pups and a year after Dillion’s mate had hers, Sara wanted pups again. Rumor had it that when she got pregnant her scent never changed. Similar to when she was pregnant with Dillion’s pups, Charles couldn’t keep his hands off of her and she ended up having the babies fourteen and twelve weeks early.” I hold my hand up as I can tell Deven is really getting curious.
“Something that I missed in this story is that in October 1996, Charles attacked and killed Dillion three months before Sara had the pups which forced the council to coronate him as alpha of the pack two months later. Dillion’s mate and twins were run off from the pack and Sara’s twins were born in January, just a few weeks later. Why did I tell you this history? Every werewolf knows that when a female gets pregnant she carries the scent of the father. The only time that isn’t true is in the case of fraternal twins. If the twins are conceived of different fathers then the female’s scent won’t change.”
Deven’s following along intensely with the same look I’m certain I had when Tina did this same thing.
“The DNA test came back to a single wolf, Alpha Cole Jonathan Redmen. The shock comes from matching him to his mother and father. He is the son of current Luna Sara Mae Redmen but he’s not the son of Alpha Charles Andrew Redmen. No, he’s the son of the late Dillion Alister Redmen.”
