(Cole’s POV)
I’m barely awake when I hear their voices. Problem is, I’m struggling to distinguish who exactly I’m hearing.
“What the hell are we doing, Andre?”
Well at least I know who’s leading the peep show into my misery now. I foolishly attempt to open my eyes but I know it’s not going to happen as multiple rounds with Kristoph made certain that I was blind.
A small whimper involuntarily escapes as my senses slowly come back to me and I can tell that there’s more than two people that have entered the room.
“Keep your voice down, Maximus.” Andre hisses quietly.
“What’s up with you, man? You hate the perv as much….”
He doesn’t get to finish his sentence as it sounds like he’s hit the wall.
“That ends now. What about my breakdown in Alpha Julian’s rage room makes you think I hate him.”
I hear a body drop to the floor with a gasp, coughing repeatedly as he recovers.
“Why the sudden change towards him is all I’m trying to figure out.”
I cringe as his voice echoes off the training room’s walls.
“Keep your voice down!” He hisses again. “The last thing any of us need is for him to start yelping prematurely because you can’t control your volume. Dad, Andrew, David, and Kristoph have all been in here multiple times a day for the last three days beating on him and those are just the ones I easily recognize. I’m surprised he’s even conscious right now. He’s already in extreme pain and your voice is not going to add to it.”
He finally goes silent as all I hear are slow footsteps on the mat getting closer to me. I start struggling, rattling the chains that bind my arms above my head.
“Easy, Cole. It’s important that we don’t make any noise. Not yet. I need to get you down and unchained without dad hearing it.”
I can hear his voice, understand his request but none of my siblings have cared about me in the last five years, why would they care now.
“Max, I need you to find the controller to the hoist he’s hooked to. I need you to lower it until his feet are flat on the floor. If his arms aren’t dislocated yet they will be if he struggles much more.”
“Yes sir.”
I hear Max confirm as his footsteps trail away leaving just one inching towards me.
“What exactly are we doing Andre?”
The third person in the room finally speaks.
“Training did the opposite of what dad was looking for, Amos. Alpha training camp no longer abuses the upcoming alpha until he rules with an iron fist. Until he rules through pain and fear. No, only rogues and ferals live that way. The only way this pack is going to make it through the hell dad created is for one of us to step up and question what he’s taught. I know it doesn’t mean much, Cole, but I’m sorry for what I have done and what I need to do now. While you have nothing but pain in your past with me making it so you don’t trust me it is imperative for your survival that you stay quiet.”
Something about how he says it, his tone of voice, the caution he’s taking in getting near me that tells me he’s sincere.
“I’m not hurting you out of malice Cole. There is nowhere that I can touch you without hurting you. I swear I’ve tried multiple times over the three days since I found where dad had you to get to you but dad’s had so many people in here that I had to take a step back and form a plan. I promise you, your hell is done.”
I can’t contain my yelp as my arms suddenly jerk upwards resulting in Andre wrapping his arms around me.
“Maximus!” He chastises lowly. “Are you trying to rip his arms off?” He hisses.
“I’m sorry Andre. I wasn’t even certain if this was the correct controller. None of the buttons are marked. I’m going to push this button just below the one I just hit. Tell me what it does.”
I can hear Andre growling, unappreciative of his beta’s lack of knowledge. Once again my arms jerk and the chains rattle causing me to cry out as any movement is immensely painful. They move again. This time in the correct direction but I can’t stifle my yelp. As my feet finally flatten out on the floor my head is pulled downward into Andre’s neck.
“Bite me, Cole. Bite down hard. You must stifle.” He hisses urgently.
‘Everyone freeze! Silence!’
I hear him briefly through the link causing me to bite down yet everyone does indeed stop everything. I can hear dad’s voice coming closer to the room. It’s obvious that he’s conversing with multiple people as he stops at the door. Andre and I both stop breathing as we wait for him to reach the door. The knob rattles as it turns but before he can push it open a sudden crash can be heard at the front of the house, rattling even the back of the pack house less than thirty seconds later. Without ever pushing on the door, he steps away, cursing his misfortune.
“Thank you, Diana. You are a lifesaver.” Andre murmurs under his breath. “Amos, how is barricading that door coming?” He asks as my arms resume being lowered.
“He has bolts on this side of the door that I’ve already locked but I’ve put a file cabinet in front of it just in case.”
“Excellent. Hit the back door. Ashley should be here with Dr. Johnston and the ambulance soon. Cole, I know you’re blind so I’m going to guide your arms as they come down so they land on my shoulders.”
I feel one of his hands leave my back before feeling it on my arm.
“You’re doing great, Cole. Max keep going a little longer than I need you to go grab the biggest robe you can find in the closet. There should be some left from the showers being used.”
Finally my arms are at a more comfortable level as I suddenly jump closer to Andre. The back door is finally open with a wisp of cold late night air common in early April dancing across my back. I ball the fabric of Andre’s shirt into my hands, shaking violently in both fear and cold.
“Woah that air is cold. Sorry I took so long.” Max’s voice bounces around the room.
“Close that door behind us.” Dr. Johnston directs Amos.
The distinct sound of wheels can be heard traveling across the mats that make up the floor of the room. The door squeaks shut, cutting the breeze off in the process.
“Dr. Carter said Cole was in an accident. This is no accident. Are you certain that’s even Cole?”
It’s the first time I’ve heard Ashley’s voice in years, making it so that my only ability to recognize her is Andre’s reference to her coming.
“I’m sorry Ashley. I know you left here as soon as you were old enough to move to White Moon but Dr. Carter said you were the best at establishing IV’s. He also felt that it was time for you to understand what’s been happening to Cole. It got worse after you left.”
