Monday, May 13th Pt. 7
It’s 2pm and this is certainly proving to be a long day for both of us. Even though the reversal was given two hours ago Colton has yet to fully wake up. A complication that even Dr. Hamilton isn’t approving of.
He came back to the hospital after leaving when he found out the struggle Colton is having. He reached Deven by phone and asked about the panels he drew from Cole last night. He told me when he came back to Cole’s room what he did. After explaining that the panels drawn last night will all take 24 hours to get the simplest ones done and two weeks for the more complex ones, there were several panels that could be run and completed in a few hours to give him a better understanding of the support Colton would need. I agreed to allow them to use the existing IV to draw two more vials for testing. He linked with me a few minutes ago to tell me the results. The main filters of his body, the liver and kidneys, have very elevated enzyme levels. For the kidneys, it’s common for the person to have a uti. The liver is not so clear but it usually means it’s damaged. He requested several medications be given including a second dose of the reversal drug to help clear his body of the drugs. A two time knock on the door alerts me to someone coming in.
“Good afternoon Alpha Cassius. I’m here to start Colton on an antibiotic and a few others.”
“Yes ma’am. Will we be able to take the antibiotic home?”
“Yes. This first dose is a stronger version of penicillin to get it in his system faster then tomorrow morning he can start taking amoxicillin. I’m going to set this up on the feeder and start it after I give the other.”
She moves fluidly around Colton’s bed checking and charting his vitals. She cleans the port to his IV before giving him the first drug.
“This is another dose of the reversal. Hopefully it will bind to the propofol and help clear it out. Unfortunately, I also need to collect a urine sample and with him asleep there’s only one way to retrieve it.”
“Is something so invasive necessary?”
“Yes sir. We need to narrow down the bacteria causing his uti. Penicillin is a good start but it won’t be effective unless the bacteria is susceptible to it.”
Before I can argue any further, she moves the lower half of the blanket to his chest and starts the process. He immediately starts whimpering from the unexpected intrusion, shifting his legs in discomfort. I lay the upper half of my body over his, positioning myself so I can speak directly into his ear.
“I’m sorry. This wasn’t planned but they need to test for infection.”
I slide my hand under his head as his show of discomfort increases, using my thumb to rub the skin just behind his ear.
“Grab my shirt with you right. You cannot fight this.”
I encourage him. He yelps hard as he grabs my shirt.
“I’m sorry for such a rude awakening but I’m right we’re I need to be. Once the flow stops, removing everything will be a lot easier.” The nurse chimes in reassuringly.
“I need my clothes. Please. Bad things happen when I’m naked.”
He pleads and I can do nothing but sigh.
“Soon buddy. I promise. We need you to be awake enough to walk. Then we can get you dressed and out of here. There will be plenty of rest once we leave.”
I can feel him trying to fight, sliding his legs up and down the bed.
“I need your legs still.”
I’m impressed by the nurse’s patience considering she’s working with an adult.
“Please stop!” He suddenly yelps. “It hurts.” He whimpers as he breaks down.
“I’m sorry honey. I can tell you have a bad infection. Can you keep your legs still? I’d like to cover you back up and speak to the doctor about some pain relief.”
I can feel him nod as he speaks.
“Please cover me. I can handle it if it doesn’t move but I can’t be naked.” He manages to get through.
“Check his chart for the last time he got Vicodin. He’s been receiving that for his broken wrist.”
“Yes sir. Give me a few minutes.” I stay with him and to my relief he manages to relax in my hold.
“We need you to stay awake so we can get you out of here.”
“I can’t sleep like this. Who are you, again?”
“You don’t remember?”
“You are familiar enough that I’m only a little afraid but I can’t grasp your name. Not right now.”
“Cassius.”
“Alpha Cassius.”
“Yes sir. Do you remember who you are?”
“Colton Allen Zander.”
“Okay.”
“You’re disappointed.” He observes.
“I guess I was hoping the stress might wake your memory a little but that’s okay.”
“No please!” He suddenly cries as he tries to roll to the left side.
“Medicine hurts. I don’t know what it is.”
I keep him from rolling enough that I have a moment to look up. The nurse is back with two syringes, one appears already hooked up to his IV.
“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to startle you. I’ve got Vicodin and toradol to give you. He didn’t want to add anything to what you’re already receiving. He did however recommend giving you the option to do a saline flush that has lidocaine in it.”
“What is that? I don’t like the sound of that.”
The panic is growing in his voice just from the idea of it. I gently bring him closer to me, verbally calming his desires to fight.
“Let me give you these in your IV and I’ll tell you about the flush while doing so.”
“I have a choice?”
“I will not force the flush as it can be difficult to handle but those who have managed it said the relief it gave afterwards was well worth the initial discomfort.”
“I can’t handle pain. I’m sorry I’m so weak but I can’t. I just want to get out of here.”
“It’s okay Cole. It’s not weak to admit that adding anything to your current level would push you over the edge.”
“Very good. You took both of those well. Now be still. You’re very irritated so a little sharpness is expected but I promise this will be quick.”
Without warning he grabs my shirt tightly and holds his breath.
“Breathe Colton.” I encourage as I duck my head closer to his ear. “I know it’s intense but you need to breathe.”
He starts letting his whimpers out in very short, stiff breaths. I can only imagine what it feels like to have such a sensitive part of my body infected and inflamed. He suddenly yelps several times as he fights to roll and curl into a ball, both of which are stopped by my position in the bed. The pain from removing the catheter proves to be his ultimate undoing as calming him gently isn’t working. Without thinking I jump onto his bed, straddling his body as I instinctively wrap myself around him. I release my alpha aura and slip my hand onto his neck. He stiffens immediately making it difficult to judge what had more of an impact.
