(Cole’s POV)
I whimper softly as the harsh pain of my injuries is the only thing that tells me I’m even alive. I start moving cautiously, slowly trying to acclimate myself to my surroundings. My eyes are swollen shut and my jaw is wired shut for the fourth time in my life. Genius, I’m blind and mute.
My whimpers increase as I feel the weight of a cast that covers my arm from the palm of my hand and up over my left elbow. My right arm is a little better but not by much. A shorter plastic brace covers that arm, falling just below my elbow.
“Easy, Cole.”
A slightly recognizable voice speaks to me but I’m unable to place who it is.
“You are significantly injured. You had a hard three day fight in the hospital before we could safely move you to my house. Alex and I didn’t know if you would make it this time.”
I take a deep breath as the oxygen cannula under my nose tickles me. The regret is instant as the ribs on my left side scream in pain. My yelps are cut short by the fact I can’t open my mouth causing me to fight. I’m rolling my head rapidly side to side as the hell Kris promised me comes roaring to life bringing tears to the eyes I can not open.
“Concentrate on my touch.”
His voice is calm but firm as he lays his hand gently on the back of my head. I still my fight as the pain I’ve created forces no other reaction.
“That’s it Cole.”
His voice is patient as I struggle desperately to place a name with it.
‘Who are you?’ I think.
“Are you trying to link with me?”
I’m shocked by his response but before I can attempt to respond I feel him. My head explodes with the pressure created by the link and there’s nothing I can do but fight again as I whimper loudly. He stops his attempts to connect with me almost immediately but the pain still lingers.
“I’m sorry, Cole. Let me go get your pain medication before we try something different. I know I heard you without you speaking. You want to know who I am.”
I freeze as I realize he’s being truthful. That his attempt at linking wasn’t for the fun of watching me squirm.
“I am Dr. Oliver Johnston. I’m the main doctor working in the wing. We’ve met in the wing a few times but this is the first time I’ve brought you into my home for care.”
I try to relax as what little care he’s given me has never purposely harmed me.
‘How long?’
He stops moving as if he’s shocked to hear me again.
“I’m going to stop for a moment and simply relax my mind. Can you repeat your question but be more specific?”
‘How long have I been asleep?’
“I’m not certain.”
I can tell that he’s moving around the room again. He’s quite a distance from me pulling open drawers and placing items on the counter.
“Around midnight Sunday morning I was woken by a large crashing sound against my front door. Scared my mate Emily and my girls Ava and Aurora awake. By the time I made it downstairs I could hear a vehicle speeding away. I could see your body on the other side of the screen door but the door wouldn’t open enough for me to get out. I grabbed my medic bag and ran out the back. I called the ambulance service on my way around the house. You were unconscious when I got to you. Do you remember anything?”
He’s started working his way back to me. The sounds of a large cart being wheeled towards me immediately makes me nervous.
‘What are you planning to do to me?’
“I’m hearing a lot of fear Cole. I’m not going to harm you.”
He’s trying to console me but the closer he gets to me the more I want to jump out of the bed. I start shifting my legs and arms, desperate to find some sort of movement that isn’t painful but it’s a losing battle. The opening and closing of the door starts my frenzy over as Dr. Johnston is simply too close and I can’t control the overwhelming fear that has consumed me.
“What’s wrong?”
A feminine voice joins the room.
“This must be the fear Alex was talking of. Cole, I need you to settle down.”
He places one hand on the back of my head and the other in my right hand.
“Shhhh.”
He slows my movements gently.
‘What are you going to do to me?’
I can’t help but repeat the question I can’t be certain he hears.
“Is that him?” The female speaks.
“You can hear him too?”
“Yes, quite clearly. Though it’s not a link.”
“No Emily, I think whatever he’s using uses our linking ability as a bridge. It caused him tremendous pain when I attempted to link with him which tells me his link wasn’t opened properly. Cole, we hear your question. I promise, nothing malicious is going to happen to you.”
He pauses as he pets my hair.
“I know your senses are limited to sound and smell so which of those spooked you?”
‘Wheels. You have a cart full of stuff for me. Please knock me out. I can’t handle the torture anymore.’
“Oh, Ollie.”
His mate sounds stunned that I would assume such a thing.
“Considering your injuries I can see how bringing a cart full of stuff over to you would make you fearful. While I cannot promise that your sponge bath will be pain free it is an important part of helping you heal.”
His voice is patient and gentle, calming what little fight I have against him. I don’t trust him but I’m in far too much pain to keep fighting him.
“I would like to give you some medication. I’ve got a small amount of morphine that you get every eight hours and Vicodin every four. I do have a nurse that takes over monitoring you and giving you medication when it’s due overnight but the majority of your care is solely mine.”
‘Why?’
“Why what?”
He has started moving away from my head towards my feet.
‘Why aren’t I in General? You’ve never taken interest in me like this. Dad doesn’t allow it.’
