Friday, October 18th Pt. 8

“Yes sir.” He nods as he leaves the bottle of water he was drinking with Jessa. “Buddy recognized Demetri’s voice on the phone. He immediately told me that he was our alpha and we needed to get back to him. It was only because I didn’t recognize him that I chose to come back here and Buddy understood that. The moment he came in the door Buddy recognized both of them. While I am nervous with Alpha Demetri Buddy keeps telling me that he saved my life and is trying to save our mate. Any comfort he can bring to her is welcomed.”
I smile briefly when he looks at me nodding my head in approval. It’s rare to find an alpha male who doesn’t easily get jealous but they do exist. He walks slowly back to the kitchen. I’m fairly certain that he’s after another water considering he gave the first one to his mate. I crouch down beside the chair Jessa and Demetri sit in, making myself smaller lowers the feeling of being a threat.
“Jessa, I know it hasn’t been very long but we need to talk about what’s going on and what I can do to help.”
She shakes her head.
“No?” I ask quietly so as not to relay any anger.
“I know what’s going on. I don’t want to know what I’m in for. Whatever it is, just do it. Please. I don’t want to die.”
Tears are streaming down her face as she makes her statement.
“I still have to tell you what each step is, otherwise it’s not informed consent.” I try to explain as she shakes her head.
“I know the misery that normal wolves go through when detoxing from silver.”
“You’re not a normal wolf.” I try to keep the conversation going but she simply keeps shaking her head.
“I don’t want to die.”
She turns back to Demetri, burying herself into his neck as she cries. He wraps his free arm around her, rubbing her back between her shoulders.
“What’s the process for detoxing an empath? Cost doesn’t matter. Send me the bill and you will be compensated.” Demetri makes eye contact with me as he speaks.
“It’s similar to detoxing a standard wolf but it has extra steps. Hopefully she’s willing to talk about what happened to her without the details that would set her back as trusting us is imperative to her survival. The first step is the most painful. I have to give her a specialized form of Silvex 30em. It takes fifteen minutes for it to start taking effect. The worst of the pain lasts about an hour. Once the medication reaches her wolf it will force her wolf to dump thirty percent of every toxin she’s been exposed to into her blood allowing specialized blood tests to reveal everything that has been forced upon her during her years as a rogue.”
“You said in the back that detoxing her is both painful and dangerous. What are we looking at there?”
Demetri has taken his role of protecting Jessa quite seriously wanting to know what’s going to happen when she just wants it to happen.
“It’s best if we get her back in the lap of her mate before we go much further. Cole, would you be willing to take some Vicodin? It will help you cope with the transfer of pain.”
“Transfer of pain?”
He and Cassius speak at the same time. Cole cocks his head in confusion as Cass waits for my answer.
“It’s difficult to tell if it’s because you’re mates or if it’s because you’re a protector but the increase in pain in your back was due to a transfer of pain. I didn’t think of it until Demetri purposely started taking on Jessa’s pain that the pain signature on both of you changed between me leaving for the pharmacy and returning. I would highly recommend that you take two of the Vicodin tablets sitting on the table. Demetri and I will also be taking them.”
“Why is that? Are you hurt?” Sheila asks, concerned and confused.
“Take a seat with Cass and Ari. The two of you will need an understanding of what is going on as I don’t believe that Cassius was ever taught the truth about empaths.”
“What makes you think that?” Charlotte sounds offended, making Jessa squirm.
“Take it easy on the tone. Jessa is very frightened and has not had the beneficial protections that I, my mother and grandmother have had. How much did Alpha Cannon speak of his father Nick or his grandfather Marcus.”
I can hear Charlotte sigh as she descends the stairs. I know it’s a painful subject due to the early demise of both Alpha Nick and Alpha Cannon. I wait until Cole comes back from taking the Vicodin to start working with Jessa. Despite her increasing pain she does manage to go with Cole to use the restroom.
“Alpha Demetri.”
I’m surprised when Cole calls him over Cassius or I from the doorway of his room. It only takes a moment for Demetri to emerge carrying Jessa.
“Are you certain that you can help her? She’s getting worse.”
“She’s already agreed to receive the therapy without thought about what’s going to happen. While it will be a difficult road, a sixty percent survival rate is better than zero.”
I’m truthful with my statement as I hear the ladies gasp.
“Cole, get settled back in the chair Demetri was in. I’m going to do a brief read to get a handle on where her pain level is before the transfer starts. I may have to go get something stronger than Vicodin to give her.”
I’m starting to move a little faster as it’s important to gain control before everything is lost. I wait until Jessa has settled back into Cole’s lap before directing Demetri to grab two of the Vicodin.
“Hey sweetie. I’m sorry. It seems like I’m not moving fast enough. It’s been a while since I’ve had to detox an empath and because it’s very dangerous to detox an empath it’s important that I run everything in the correct order.”
“Are you sure you can save me?”
Her voice trembles as I push her hair to the side. I lean my head against her temple as I place my hand on her neck.
“Take my hand.” I direct her softly. I wait until she wraps her fingers around my hand to speak again. “It’s because you’re so sick that you have a lower than normal survival rate but it’s still higher than 50/50. Keep faith in me, Jessa. I will not fail you.” I close my eyes, concentrating on her alone for a moment.
“l’ll be right back.”
I reassure her as I move towards the pharmacy. I grab another tray and literally start throwing supplies into it trying frantically to remember the last empath that was this bad off. It’s a horrid memory as I did fail her. She managed to get better during the first week of detox but I ran the wrong tests and failed to repeat tests that had previously been done. By the time I caught her withholding critical information it was too late. Perhaps that’s why I’m so anal about keeping her here in the pack house. I relinquished control to an older and better trained empath. Something empaths don’t do, relinquish control. I hurry back to the living room with my tray overflowing and dump it out on the dining room table. I can feel the curiosity others have in my actions but it seems to be overshadowed with fear. They seem to have caught on to the significance of my change in pace. I grab the Vicodin on the table, pop two into my mouth, and down some water from a random bottle sitting there. I pick quickly through what I dumped on the table and put what I need back in the bin. I grab a chair from the table and pull everything over to where Jessa sits. I place the tray on the coffee table as I sit in the chair, a far more comfortable position.
