“I’m sorry for the intrusive nature of the question. The only medical school exclusive to werewolves on the east coast is the Greater Council for Supernatural Medicine. I researched them as I had an interest in paying for Jessa to go but found that while the werewolves that were admitted there did very well, there was a very low death rate for a learning hospital, they have a strict punishment policy. One that I felt is far too harsh considering how many empaths are abused.”
I nod my head.
“The guilt of her death wasn’t enough. I was placed on a four week probation where I was not allowed to interact with the patients until the case had been reviewed by the elders in charge of the hospital. We weren’t aware at the time of my enrollment the full extent of their rules and they reserve the right to discontinue your education if someone dies no matter how sick they are. The morning after her death I was called to the dean’s office, informed of my probation and what the expectations were during that time. At the end of the meeting I went to leave and she told me that we weren’t done. She claimed that the council mandates physical punishment for any actions that result in the death of the patient. I tried to argue my case again but it didn’t matter that the master I was apprenticed to gave me information that contradicted what I wanted to do. Kelly was my patient. I should have ran the tests I felt she needed. I ultimately submitted to the punishment even though I had never received such a thing from my parents or Alpha Cannon.”
“May I intrude further?” I nod as I feel I know his question.
“How was it carried out?”
“She specified that because the school wasn’t a pack and she wasn’t my alpha she could not punish bare bottom unless I chose not to wear underwear. After she explained that, I was instructed to go to the desk, pull my pants down and my shirt up. I was to keep my hands on the desk the entire time. If I moved from the position she put me in or made any sounds outside of quiet grunts the count started over. I was eighteen at the time and that’s what she gave.”
I sigh deeply as I try to switch my brain back to drawing Jessa’s blood. Her refusal to answer the last question resulted in a longer delay than I wanted. She pulls her arm weakly as I tie the band around it.
“I know it’s not pleasant but I need these tests done. I will be drawing you blood again tomorrow twelve to twenty-four hours after you receive the Silvex. Good news is I can use this IV to do it with.”
My explanation is not enough as her fight slowly increases with her begging.
“No. Please. I’ll be good. I will leave. Just let me go. Please.”
“Jessa, you’re not there. You’re at Shadowlands. You need this.” Demetri tries to calm her increasingly desperate fight.
“No. I can’t. Blue Moon did this. The beta punished me like this. I can’t.”
She somehow manages to find the strength to get away from my grasp before the needle even gets close to her. Demetri is now behind her and beside the chair they sit in.
“Cole, this needs to happen. As afraid of needles and submission as you are, I need your help.” He nods slowly as Demetri encourages her to change her position.
“Are you ready Deven? Quicker is better.”
“Yes sir.”
I can still hear her crying ‘no’ into Cole’s neck as I wipe her arm down. Demetri now has a firm hold on her arm preventing her from getting away.
“I know Jessa, I’m sorry. Big pinch.”
I slide the needle into her arm easily. Her veins haven’t been heavily scarred like Cole’s have but that doesn’t keep her from yelping.
“Four. The answer is four.”
She yells like she’s confessing to a sin that will stop the torture she’s enduring.
“The four packs I stayed the longest at. They all did this. They all sedated me with silver, beat me until I couldn’t move and then raped me. I don’t know how many times, how many men. It just didn’t stop for days.”
She’s bawling by the time she finishes. Demetri moves his hand from her arm but her fight is completely gone as I tape everything down. I move quickly through filling the tubes with her blood.
“Demetri.” I wait until the blood draw is nearly finished before speaking again. “Do you think you can give her the shot of Silvex?”
She whines sharply as she shakes her head.
“You’ve changed your mind? You don’t want the treatment that will save you?” He asks her gently as he pets her hair.
“I’m scared. So very scared that I can’t think. I don’t want to die but I don’t know what that vile says.”
“I understand. Truly, I do. I have an idea on how to calm that fear but I need you to trust me.”
“I do Demetri. Please don’t leave me. I need you. I trust you. You’re the only man since my parents died that has treated me like family. I’m sorry I haven’t sought you out more but I swear I need you.”
She has managed to take the arm that’s leaning against Cole and has grabbed the arm Demetri has crossed from her shoulder to her abdomen. She’s running a dramatic cycle of being able to calm herself into light whimpering and bawling almost hysterically. Demetri waits patiently for her to calm again before attempting to leave her side.
“May I dump out this other tray and bring it over?” He asks casually.
“Yes. Grab the vial, syringe, and both the twenty and twenty-eight gauge needles. I’ll give more instructions once you allow her to look at the vial.” He turns quickly to look at me.
“I heard your conversation and letting her hold and look at the vial before you withdraw the medication inside will help ease her into accepting the shot.”
“Great minds think alike.”
He murmurs before dumping everything onto the table. I look around briefly as Sheila, Cassius, Ari and Charlotte have all been unusually quiet. Ari and Cass have made their way to the recliner Cole and Jessa started in. They both appear to be asleep except for Cassius lightly rocking it. Charlotte seems to have busied herself on her iPad and Sheila looks tired and concerned. I make eye contact with her briefly opening my link at the same time.
‘Is she really going to die?’ Her eyes tear as she asks even though she’s never met Jessa she still feels for the young woman.
‘As I said, sixty is far better than zero.’ I try to reassure her as I switch to the last tube. I change my connection quickly and reach out to my late night lab tech.
‘Marissa, I need you to come to the grand living room please.’
I don’t wait for a response as I let go.
“Jess.” I hear Demetri call her attention to him. “I watched Deven punch in a PIN code to get this out of the cabinet. You said you trust me, my word to you?”
He asks gently. She nods as she takes the vile from his hand.
“I don’t know what he had to do to get it but I promise you, he didn’t tamper with it. Deven removed it from the locked cabinet, placed it in the bin and brought it out here. It was in the first bin he brought out.”
She’s looking at him with an intensity that only comes with trusting the other after such abuse has been bestowed upon them. She handles the vile with such delicacy that tells me she understands the importance of it. She hands the vial back to Demetri with a slow nod, tears escape slowly as I have already informed them that it is a painful shot to receive.
“As a doctor I’m familiar with filling syringes but this is a specialty medication. Some of those have special procedures.”
He brings the tray of supplies he created to the coffee table before returning to the dining room for a chair.
