(Jamison’s POV)

It’s been a month since Dr. Moore received permission to medically sever Cole’s link. Unfortunately, it hasn’t worked the way it normally does. This medication has made it even more obvious that Cole’s linking abilities are vastly different then everyone else’s.
I’ve attended several meetings for Cole between Alpha Black and Alpha Whiteman. Both alpha’s stances remain the same at every meeting. Alpha Black continues to beg Alpha Whiteman to send Cole back before the council gives permission for it to happen and Alpha Whiteman, while he’s willing to help Cole escape, he is steadfastly against making a move before the council approves it.
Cole has spoken several times of simply running from White Ridge, the problem with that plan is how weak his father has made him. With only his feet to carry him he’d be lucky to find his way out of the White Ridge territory.
I’ve made my way, once again, to Alpha Whiteman’s office. We’re supposed to be having lunch with him but Cole’s ability to stop praying to the porcelain god has been limited at best the last two days. I only left the room because Dr. Moore is with him.
I knock on Alpha Whiteman’s door and wait for my invitation in. I open the door slowly after hearing his voice, stepping out of my shoes before entering his office.
“Still no Cole?” He asks disappointedly.
“I’m sorry sir. He’s been under attack again the last three days. Dr. Moore has increased the dose of the medication that he’s on but it seems like his father knew what he was doing when he created the link like he did in Cole’s childhood.”
“What makes you think that?” I can hear Alpha Demetri on the phone.
“It’s not me that thinks it, alpha. I know it’s not as good as him telling you but his father told him that during the last attack.”
“Do you remember what Cole told you about that?” Alpha asks gently.
“Most of it.”
“I’d like you to tell me so we better know how to help him.”
I pull the chair away from Alpha Whiteman’s desk and take a seat, momentarily closing my eyes as these endless attacks are leaving me exhausted.
“He told Cole that he purposely denied him both the welcoming ceremony and the shifters ceremony because he had found information that suggested that doing so would create an abnormal link if one was established at all. He knew soon after he forced a link with him that it had worked, that he had created the perfect way to cause him pain without ever touching him.”
My voice is cracking as I try to contain my emotions, reminding me of a common excuse Cole uses to not talk about what’s happening to him; talking makes it real.
“What’s going on with Cole, Jamie?”
“His father knew that this would happen. He researched this pack. He knows who Alpha Andrew is. He knows what happened to Alpha Whiteman. He knew that they would seek permission from the council to use the medication. He knows the medication has harsh side effects. The only thing he admitted to not knowing was how Cole’s link would react to it. He’s purposely been getting high and drunk so that the effects of the severance doesn’t deter him from connecting with Cole. He knows how sick and weak these attacks are leaving him and it’s the sole reason that he continues to do it.”
I lean my head back on the chair with my eyes closed taking deep slow breaths with an open mouth in an effort to not sound like I want to cry.
“Alpha Whiteman, please reconsider your stance when he is suffering in ways that neither of us understand.”
“Do not tell me what I understand about his suffering.”
Alpha Whiteman’s voice is cold as he speaks to Alpha Demetri. I can hear him sigh as it is becoming obvious that it’s impossible to get Alpha Whiteman to budge.
“Dr. Moore has briefed me regularly about Cole’s condition and the effectiveness of the medication. He has also been briefing the council and they have withdrawn the recommendation of continuing the medication.”
“It’s hard to tell if that’s the appropriate thing to do but what is appropriate is to assist him in getting to your border. I will pick him up. I will take the fall for kidnapping, assisting a runaway, whatever the council wants to charge.”
“I understand your concern Demetri, however, with the scrutiny of the council within my pack I am not inclined to make a move without their permission. It doesn’t matter how obvious that doing so would be the right thing to do.”
“Which is why his father chose your pack to abandon him at, no matter how brief a time it is.”
Alpha’s voice is sad and disappointed that he hasn’t moved from his original position.
“I’m sorry that it’s not what you want to hear but I’ve had to fight for my pack twice. I cannot risk losing it over a single individual.”
Alpha sighs but doesn’t say anything else before a soft click tells me he’s hung up the phone.
“Jamie.”
I look up as Alpha Whiteman leans forward with both his arms on the top of his desk.
“I realize how exhausting it has been for you to constantly care for your alpha when his father has kept him so sick. I have been keeping up with everything going on and while I hesitate to help him run away from his pack, I will continue to help you with his care.
Can you tell me anything about getting him to eat? Perhaps if we could work together on getting him a bit stronger then I can give him directions to a cabin deep in the woods. It’s about a five mile hike from where the two of you are staying but it’s only a mile from my border. If he can manage to get there he can contact Alpha Black to send someone to pick him up.
That’s the closest to helping him run that I can get. If members of your pack intervene before he can get away, unless I have orders from the council or committee to send him back to Crimson Dawn, I cannot prevent them from forcing him to return home.”
“I’ll talk with him and try to find out how we can work together to get him eating better.”
“I’ll continue to meet with you and let Alpha Black know of the little I can do. Get some sleep if you can while Dr. Moore is caring for him today, you look terrible.”
