“Nick and Chrissy went on to have six pups, three boys and three girls. The last pregnancy was a surprise set of twins just like the first. Their first born son, Cannon, was taught from an early age that he would one day be alpha. It took some time to calm him down but in the end, when his father died an early death in battle, he became the alpha Marcus and Nicholas would be proud of. He found his fated mate, Charlotte and continued the pack’s sanctuary roots. If you need help we will care for you gently but if you cause trouble you will pay dearly. As you’re already aware, your mom and dad only had you and you started your rule very young.”
Cassius is nodding his head as he obviously recognizes this portion of the family tree.
“After Nichole and Henry wed they immediately started trying to create a family. They too had a large family consisting of three girls and three boys, none were twins. It was Niki’s youngest daughter, Megan, that showed the gift of being an empath. Both Rose and Nichole started working with her on advancing her gift and by the time Rose joined Diana, Megan was better than her mother. Two of her brothers, Carlos and Sebastian found that they had been granted the gift of intuition by the time they reached their teens. All three are very well known within the pack even after retirement.”
“Did you know about all this, mom?” Cassius is shocked.
I would be too if I take the time to be honest.
“Your great grandmother Rose was a very private person.” Charlotte responds.
“Did you know?”
“Not the details that Deven just shared.” She shakes her head as she speaks.
“Your father and I knew that Nicholas and Nichole were twins and that she was an empath. Considering Megan was also an empath and she is Cannon’s first cousin we were educated on what to look for in a young empath while I was pregnant with you.”
“Why didn’t you ever tell me Deven was my cousin?”
“He’s your second cousin and I thought you knew. Considering the two of you have been friends your entire lives.” Deven smiles as Cassius looks at him.
“You knew?”
“How did you not know?”
Deven is almost laughing as Cassius tries to figure it out. He shakes his head.
“I knew about Aunt Nichole but I never called Megan aunt so I guess I never related the two. If grandma Rose was private enough that she never talked about her trauma, how do you know her story?” Deven bows his head before looking up again with a heavy sigh.
“Rose, Nichole and mom were all deeply saddened when Diana stopped blessing her with pups after having four boys. They thought for certain that the empath gift was going to end with Megan as to that point only girls had been gifted. I was an infant when Marcus died. He had such an impact on Rose that when he left she couldn’t bear to stay in the pack house. Everyone thought she had run away, abandoning the pack to her son Nicholas but she didn’t. She moved in with my mom and became a recluse. I don’t think she ever left the house once she moved in but she pulled her weight helping mom with keeping the house organized and the kids in check.
I was around six years old when I started getting an uncomfortable feeling around Rose. I loved her dearly and unlike my brothers, I was drawn to her. They often teased me for choosing to be with her over playing with them. No one talked about how none of us were empaths even though we were aware that the three of them were empathic. I noticed that Rose started spending a lot more time in her room and mom started taking her to the hospital a lot more. The uneasy feeling stayed anytime I spent time with her but I ignored it as much as possible.
It was two months before I turned seven that the feeling changed. While it wasn’t painful it wasn’t something I could ignore. It was at that time that mom started taking Rose her meals and the doctor started coming to her. It was on the third day that I gained the courage to go inside. She welcomed me warmly and asked me what was wrong. I immediately broke down crying. I had no idea why and I explained the best I could what I was feeling. She had me lay with her, she held me tight as I cried. I had no reason to cry but I needed it and she knew. She apologized to me as I finally calmed. When I was able, I asked why she was sorry. She hadn’t done anything wrong. It was then that she told me she was sorry that the first thing I felt as an empath was the feeling of death. She slowly explained that she was at her end. The dialysis treatments were no longer working, the toxins created by her organs failing built up faster than the treatments could remove. In a few days she will fall asleep and wake in the arms of her maker. She will have the pleasure of meeting Diana and seeing her dear husband again. She stayed silent as I wept again. I fell asleep shortly after.
It was several hours later when we both woke up that she again apologized. She stopped me from asking and instead explained that it gave her tremendous pleasure to find out that I inherited the empathic abilities but she wished I was a little older before telling her story. She told both Nichole and my mom her story as a means of encouraging them to stay within the safety of the sanctuary. As long as we stayed here the empathic abilities would be cherished and encouraged to grow. She told me what happened to her. I believe she was a lot more detailed but considering I was only six I believe I retained the most important parts of the story.”
Cassius and I both nod as I wasn’t expecting the sad ending.
“Over time the council has come to recognize three main types of gifted wolves; intuitives and empaths are born while protectors are created by the environment they grow up in.”
He switches story lines impressively quick.
“It’s taken a lot of time to find the information but based on the information Demetri has been able to give us and your own reactions to multiple situations, there are multiple alphas and doctors that are willing to say that you, Cole, are a protector.”
“What does that mean?” He’s confused as anyone would be.
“It means exactly what it is.” I take over the conversation. “You protect those who can’t protect themselves.”
“I still don’t understand.” He shakes his head as he hangs it down.
“It’s okay.” I try to soothe. “The legend of the protectors runs parallel with the legend of gifted werewolves.”
I continue as Deven and Cassius have yet to add in.
“Legend has it that protectors emerge when the morality of the pack as a whole is extremely low. It is said that in witnessing the worst of the werewolf kind, Diana couldn’t bring herself to sit idly by and do nothing. Just as she rewarded the packs who had made the most changes towards a civilized society she felt that enhancing the wolf who took the blows of abuse yet remained pure in heart the ability to protect others even if he or she couldn’t protect themselves would benefit those in the pack deserving of a better life.
Factually, I have found a lot of packs in the council database where there was a sudden and dramatic change in the ruling alpha. The council prefers to keep the wolf’s story low key but if you search enough you will find what you are looking for. “
