Monday, May 13th Pt. 4
“Aaron, where are the curtains?”
I ask cautiously as I noticed Colton opened his eyes as soon as I took my arm from around him. It’s easy to see the deep unrelenting fear that is consuming him within them.
“Carol and Chasity are bringing them in from the closet. He’s a werewolf. It should be nothing to get changed with a crowd.”
“Cassius!” Deven shouts my name.
I turn in time to see the young man take off in a sprint towards the door. Fortunately the mix of Valium and Vicodin has slowed him considerably and in three big strides I’m in his path. His panicked run is blind as I wrap my arm around him and pull him into me. He yelps and screams as he pushes against me with both hands. I hate doing it but I slide my hand onto the back of his neck. He freezes instantly showing me how intensely ingrained his instincts are.
“Come close. Lay your head. You’re having a horrible time right now.”
I relax my pressure on his neck as he submits to my suggestion. He grabs the back of my shirt with both hands as he lays his head on my shoulder.
“It’s okay to cry. I know that hurt you.” I whisper encouragingly.
“I’m sorry.” He whispers in response. His entire body is shaking in my arms.
“What’s got you so frightened?”
I ask the young man hoping he can give me something to work with.
“I can’t be naked. It’s not right. Bad things happen when I’m naked.”
“What do you mean? Do you remember someone hurting you?”
“No sir” He buries himself even tighter into me.
“Colton please. I can’t help calm your fears if I don’t know where they’re coming from.”
I try again to get him to talk.
“Do you remember what I said on the phone? How I always feel that I’m going to be hit.”
“Yes I remember.”
“It’s the same. I feel like being naked is dangerous. That it only results in pain.”
“Stay with me.” My voice is low, encouraging him to step forward as I step back towards the bed.
“I promise nothing bad is going to happen to you. You will never leave the sight of Deven or I. Would it help if we’re the ones to help you undress and get in the gown? They finally have the curtains up.”
“I don’t want to do this.”
“I promise you that’s the fear talking. You are going to feel a lot better once this is done.”
Despite the shortness of the conversation I have managed to pull him into the area created by the two folding racks of curtains. They have been opened into two ninety degree lines and butted up against each other forming three quarters of a rectangle. The only side that’s missing is the one facing away from all the people.
“I know this is difficult but I think the best way to do this is similar to how I help Cody when he doesn’t feel well. I’m going to take your pants off first so you can sit on the bed.”
Just as Deven finishes his statement he’s stepped behind Colton and started pushing his pants down. I tighten my hold as he yelps and fights the process.
“Colton, did that hurt you?”
Concerned we hadn’t found all his injuries. He calms down quickly but he’s very stiff and barely moving.
“Lift your feet one at a time.” Deven is kneeling behind him.
“That’s it.” I can feel him shift his weight as he steps out.
“I’m sorry I’m being so forceful Cole but this procedure is necessary. Putting you in a cast is the only way it’s going to stay aligned and that’s the only way it will heal. Take a few steps back so you can sit on the bed. We need to get a few things on you before you go under anesthesia.”
He’s finally relented to what’s happening and steps backwards until he reaches the bed. As soon as he sits Deven helps him get comfortable with both legs up on the bed. I stay back and let Deven work, he’s far more knowledgeable on what needs to happen.
He immediately opens the gown and covers his lap with it. It takes a little time but he manages to get Cole’s shirt off him, giving him access to his chest for the monitoring equipment to go. He makes quick work with the stickers and quickly gets the gown completely onto Cole, tying it loosely around his neck.
“Ordinarily the patient is started on the propofol as soon as they get in here so they’re not all amped up with anxiety. I feel the best way to introduce anesthesia to Cole is to have you lay with him. He has made the turn towards cooperation but to go under with as much fear as he has doesn’t work to his benefit.”
I nod as I step forward. Colton’s eyes are closed but his entire body shakes with tension.
“Cole, do you mind if I join you?” I ask causally.
“Please.” I’m surprised when he whispers.
“The best way is going to be laying on your left side. I need access to the IV on your right. Cassius and I will move you into the appropriate position once you’re asleep. This is a fast acting medication but it’s important that you’re able to relax a little before falling asleep.”
Deven explains as I lay with the young man. Deven’s help has allowed him to roll to his side without losing the privacy of his sheet. I work my way into the small bed, his reaction is the opposite of what I anticipated. Instead of fighting me he seeks me, once again burying his face into the crook of my neck.
“You're not going to be thinking much while you’re knocked out but I need you to remember what you were told by the doctor before you ran. You’ve been with an alpha like me. You’ve known some kindness. Your instincts are strong even if your memory isn’t.”
Within seconds of finishing he becomes limp in my arms. Deven allows me to stay with him as the curtains are removed and the students are allowed to enter the room. Although during heart catheterization everyone has to scrub in, this procedure simply requires a washing.
“I know it’s hard. I can tell you feel for him but we need to get this going quickly. I want him out of the anesthesia in two hours, nothing more.”
Deven is firm as he lifts the young man’s head from my shoulder. I ease myself out of the bed allowing the students and Deven to adjust Colton onto his back.
“A little babyfied don’t you think?”
Aaron makes his way through the crowd to Colton’s bed.
“While I appreciate your silence while we were working to gain his trust enough to cooperate, I would use caution before you make your next statement.”
