Monday, August 12th Pt. 4

I look around quickly trying to understand what is going on around me. Colton is in the thick of it, battling four of the eight members on his own. It’s easy to see that they’re taking full advantage of his dormant wolf yet he won’t let them loose. I can do nothing but stare as he tackles each wolf that tries to break away and run towards me. His movements are unlike any fighting style I have seen any pack warriors use and his agility. Well, his agility is far superior to any high ranking warrior I’ve ever seen.
It’s as Cole starts to tire that the police officers start breaking up the beat down Cole is enduring. They easily separate and subdue each one until each is on their knees, hands cuffed behind their backs. I slowly start making my way to where Colton now lays on the ground, his will to fight is gone as the danger has been eliminated.
“Cole.”
I call nervously as I get closer. His eyes are closed, one is obviously against his will. He’s breathing rapidly through his mouth as his nose and mouth actively bleeds onto the blacktop.
“Cole, squeeze my hand if you can hear me.” I speak softly as I crouch down beside him. I slip my hand into his, rubbing the back of it softly. He squeezes a gentle rhythm barely enough for me to feel but it’s there.
“What’s his name again?” Vincent crouches beside me.
“He told me that it was Colton Allen Xander but because he has amnesia he doesn’t believe that it’s his true name.”
“Does he respond to it?” He asks as Colton starts stirring around.
“Yes.” Is all I manage to say as his groans turn into sharp yelps of pain.
“Colton, stay on the ground. I have an ambulance coming to take you to the hospital.”
“No!” He screams no sooner than Vincent finishes his sentence. “No hospital. No shots. No needles. I can’t. No!”
His words are slurred from his swollen lip and mouth. He continues his struggle to sit upright, cursing as he puts pressure upon his swollen left hand. Vincent jumps to his feet and gets behind him as he becomes a mix of cusses, yelps and growls. He wraps his arms under Cole’s in an effort to help him to sit but the sirens of the coming ambulance cuts Cole’s ability to cooperate into nothing. He fights Vincent with what little energy he has left from the fight yet somehow Vincent manages to hang onto him. Cole is sitting upright but Vincent refuses to leave from behind him. It surprises me that Cole seems to have fallen asleep in his arms.
“What’s going on here, officers?” The first paramedic out of the truck asks.
“We finally caught the Gremlin gang that’s been terrorizing the east coast.”
He points to the other officers who are working on loading the eight rogues into a van.
“Really? How did you draw them out?”
“My best guess is they got desperate. They chased Missy here from her car and didn’t expect the four of us to escort her back. Of course she managed to run into a protector in the process.”
I cock my head as I’ve vaguely heard about the rare wolf who is blessed with such an ability.
“It looks like her protector got banged up.”
“He did. He’s struggling severely with the idea of going to the hospital but I don’t know that there’s much of a choice in the matter.”
“Has he been drifting in and out of consciousness long?” He asks as he crouches in front of Cole.
“He was barely conscious when we got to him after he took on four of them.”
“Four?” He seems shocked.
“Hey there buddy, can you tell me your name?”
He rubs Cole’s head roughly as he pushes it against Vincent’s chest. Vincent adjusts his position so he can better support Cole.
“I need to look at your eyes. Can you open them?”
I watch as Cole struggles to comply. He handles the light in his right eye but I know the left is going to be a lot more difficult.
“I need you to open your eyes as wide as you can. I’m going to help you with the left. I am sorry for any pain that it causes.”
No sooner than the paramedic touches his swollen eye he erupts in yelps and screams, fighting hard to get away.
“Let me go. No restraints. Don’t tie me. Just let go.”
He’s screaming on repeat as I push my way through the three men that have come to help.
“Let me near.” I call loudly.
All of them are struggling to keep him from running. I literally crawl into his lap as his fight continues.
“Colton please. You will hurt me.” I wrap my arms around him as I speak, calming him surprisingly quickly.
“Please Missy. You don’t understand. I’m tired of having to deal with the pain.”
“Lay yourself head on my shoulder.” I encourage with gentle pressure on the back of his head.
“No.” I release my pressure immediately but remain close to him.
“Why? It was calming in the restaurant.”
“I’ll bleed all over you.”
“I’m not worried about that.”
“I am.” His speech is slurred but understandable as he attempts to stand.
“Let’s slow down a moment.” The paramedic places his hand on Cole’s shoulder.
“You expressed a lot of fear just now so I’d like to back up a moment.” Cole slowly nods his head before his eyes slowly close.
“Cole.” I call, gently trying to wake him. He growls softly but remains limp.
“Cole, I need you to wake up or I won’t have a choice but to take you to the hospital.”
“No!”
He yells before yelping and covering his ears, whimpering softly from the pain he caused himself. I can hear the paramedic sigh hard behind me. He reaches around me and wraps his hand around Cole’s wrist, pulling it away slowly.
“I never introduced myself. My name is Darius. I’m not a werewolf but I’m very familiar with your kind. I’m very concerned with the level of injuries you have sustained taking on four wolves at one time. Yet, it’s obvious that you’re very fearful of the hospital. Based on your pleas it sounds like you haven’t been treated kindly when you’re the most vulnerable. Let me help you into the ambulance. I need you to lay down with your head only half on the bed so I can wash the blood from your face. I need to see how severely you’re bleeding before I can determine if I can find alternative plans for your care.” He explains softly.
“My twin brother is a doctor. If you can get the bleeding to stop, he was already willing to come with me.” I chime in trying to gain some cooperation.
“That sounds like a good alternative but you need to let me take a good look at you. My desire is to help you even though it tends to be painful.”
“I can’t do it alone.” He whispers shamefully.
“I’ll stay with you. I’m too short to hold you like Vincent but I’m certain we can work something out.” I try to encourage.
“Yes, she can come in the ambulance with you. Will you let me help you stand?”
He nods his head slowly. It’s easy to tell that he really doesn’t want to receive this level of help but he may be starting to recognize the necessity behind it. I stand slowly, backing up so he has space.
“Take my hand.” Darius encourages.
Cole looks up at him before looking at his hand and shaking his head.
“Why not?”
“My left hand is busted.” He admits.
“That’s okay.”
He extends the opposite hand in the hope he’d grab it. It takes all three to get him to his feet but he’s finally up and moving towards the ambulance.
