Monday, May 13th Pt. 13
It takes an additional two hours to get Colton situated and released from the hospital but in the end I did succeed in getting him out against medical advice. The big win was gaining Dr. Atkinson’s cooperation on working with Deven on additional tests. Dr. Hamilton has also requested that he return for additional MRI scans as the number of breaks he’s found on the young man was unexpected to say the least. I promised I would talk to Cole but emphasized that the young man needs the ability to make his own decisions and I would not force additional tests for exploration purposes.
Colton has fallen asleep in the car. It is expected considering the medication that he’s on. I encouraged him to lay against me when he could no longer keep his eyes open. I can tell by the change in the trees outside that we will be pulling into the pack house garage shortly. I run my hand through his hair attempting to wake him gently. It has taken me very little time to discover that his head is the easiest place to create positive contact with him despite several injuries that are still healing.
“We’re almost at the pack house, Cole. I need you awake enough that I can get you laying on the couch.”
He grumbles lightly and lifts his head, barely opening his eyes as mom pulls in.
“Follow me so I can help you get out.”
He joins me easily and without protest when I support his broken arm as he climbs out. I guide him physically to the front of the house and support him as he climbs the stairs to the door leading inside. It’s difficult to tell if he has any bad feelings about the pack house as I know most alphas, even if they aren’t kin to the alpha, will have a lot of involvement in the pack and the pack house.
“Over here.”
I include gentle directions with my voice as I physically direct him with my hands on his hips. I set everything up as I guide him into laying on the couch. He’s barely keeping his eyes open.
“I need to go upstairs with Arianna. Just relax here until I come back.”
He nods easily as I leave him. I jog lightly up the stairs taking my laptop with me to my smaller office inside my room.
“Is he going to get his memory back?” Ari asks as she closes the door behind us.
“I don’t know. He’s traveling a long hard road and it’s hard to tell when it will get any easier for him.” I try to explain what she doesn’t understand.
“Why did you stop my eye contact with him?”
“He was uncomfortable with it. Most individuals that have navy eyes will be unless they’ve been out of the abusive situation for a while.”
“How are you so certain that’s what's going on?”
“It’s the only way for a werewolf to end up with pup blue eyes, long term trauma starting in early childhood.”
“You believe he’s been abused his entire life?” Her voice is sad as she seeks more information.
“I’m certain a lot has happened to the young lad downstairs. Dissociative amnesia is extremely rare in werewolves. Deven explained last night that amnesia that severe only happens after an individual has been tortured for a long period of time.”
“Tortured?” Her voice is cracking with emotion.
“Deven explained it as abuse so severe that it should be considered torture. In my mind that’s what it is. To beat an individual repeatedly to an inch of their death is torture. Calling it something else is simply splitting hairs.”
I pull her gently into my lap, holding her as she tries to process the first high needs wolf to come since her arrival. Honestly he’s the first one I’ve had since promoting Braysen to the beta position. Several loud crashes beneath our feet alerts me to something going on downstairs. A look at my watch indicates that we’ve been up here nearly half an hour, not at all what I had planned.
“Ari, I’ve got to get back to Colton. I promised I wouldn’t be long.”
“He was sleeping when you left him on the coach. Wouldn’t it be better to set him up to sleep here?”
“He wouldn’t be comfortable here. Plus, he still needs medical care so the safest place for him is with Deven.”
She nods as she stands allowing me to follow behind. We make our way back to the living room. I slow my pace down as I approach the couch. The closer I get the more I realize that he’s no longer there.
“Where did he go?” Ari expresses the very thought I had in my head.
“I don’t know.” I respond slowly.
I turn to see Braysen stumbling out of the hall under the stairs.
“What happened?”
I rush to his side, helping him to the couch Colton was on. Ari grabs several tissues to place on his bleeding nose, encouraging him gently to lean forward as he pinches it shut. He breathes through his mouth several minutes before blowing his nose.
“Who’s the new wolf you had out here?”
“All we know about him is that his name is Colton.”
“Haven’t I told you that bringing home strays endangers the pack? I thought when you made me beta that you had listened to my concerns and stopped bringing them home.”
I listen to his chastising nonchalantly as we have rarely agreed upon anything.
“You mean to tell me that a werewolf whose wolf is in a coma and has a broken arm randomly attacked you?” I shake my head. “He was barely awake enough to get in the house half an hour ago. Once again, what happened?”
“Clayton was misbehaving with the Nova’s again. He pushed their daughter from the top of the jungle gym which broke her arm. I told them a while ago when he started acting out that I would discipline him. His crying woke Colton and he came after me. He took Clayton. I don’t know and honestly don’t care where they went.”
“You don’t care where a six year old orphan went?”
I can’t believe what I’ve heard and the look in his eyes when he looks into mine shows his realization of what he just said.
“I didn’t…” I cut him off with a shake of my head.
“You’re done. I’ll notify the council that I’m seeking a dual alpha command in the morning.”
