Monday, November 26th Pt. 3

He studies me closely, silently thinking about what he wants. I can tell he’s absolutely torn with the question but giving him a choice where Alpha Redmen gave none is the only thing I can think of to remind him of who he’s working with.
Unexpectedly, the young pup takes the final two steps remaining between him and I, collapsing easily into my lap. I hold him as he weeps again before gently coaxing him into what I know needs to be done.
The simple process of relieving himself is painfully exhausting yet the end goal is ultimately achieved before we both wash our hands. I pick him up without a word and settle him quickly onto my shoulder allowing him to feel and smell who I am. Stepping back into his room the two nurses have yet to leave and are whispering an indiscernible conversation with each other, the doctor appears to be in shock.
“The sample is sitting on the sink.” I speak to the nurses first.
“I never caught your name.” I address the doctor.
“Dr. Wilson.” She replies with a hint of irritation.
“Dr. Wilson, as I introduced before, I am Dr. Demetri Black. I called Alpha Andrew White Saturday night requesting that Jeremy be admitted to this hospital. My understanding was that he would be admitted under my care. That the tests I requested over the phone would be performed without question and he would receive medication for his pain. Can you explain why the CAT scan has not been completed and why a pain management program has not been started?”
She studies me hard before answering.
“I looked at his chart while the two of you were in the bathroom. While it does say to admit him to the children’s ward, fifth floor, west wing, it doesn’t expressly say that he’s admitted as an Operation Underground patient. His chart says he was admitted for suspected uti and/or food poisoning.”
“Do children normally get admitted to this wing with those issues?”
I ask, confused since I was told this area was designated for Operation Underground.
“No. Which may be why so little has been done for him. We don’t treat anyone from the Red Fang pack unless they have Operation Underground listed in their chart.”
“I see.”
It’s easy to see the curiosity in her eyes as she realizes the sadness and disappointment I have in my voice.
“What is your relationship with Jeremy?”
She asks again what I know has been bothering her.
“It’s quite a long story Dr. Wilson.”
“I have time.” She cuts me off.
“You may but Jeremy doesn’t. He needs an IV. He’s in a lot of pain and smart enough to understand that drinking anything produces the need to pee. I had to take on a lot of his pain just to get him to go and based on what he was able to push out, he’s already dehydrated and the amount of blood in his urine is concerning. He needs what I ordered to be done. Have you even examined him yet?”
“No. I’ve been off the last two days. I always look at the charts of all the patients here and investigate those who are not part of Operation Underground. I came up here to talk with his family to find out why they came here instead of going to Red General.”
“Were you going to transfer him back to Red Fang?”
I can’t help the concern in my voice. She nods as she speaks.
“Unfortunately I’ve had several cases that have shown up here over the last six months that I’ve had to send back.”
I look at her intensely not liking what I’m hearing but my mind is made up.
“I need you to send registration my way. They will take my information and send me the bill for his stay here. Are you in his chart now?” I ask the nurse that’s still in the room.
“Yes sir.”
Her response is hesitant, as if she doesn’t want to honor my request.
“I want an abdominal CAT scan. Bladder, intestines, and kidneys need to be the main focus but over video phone I saw his abdomen is completely covered in bruises. It also appeared distended causing me a lot of concern. He needs an IV with fluids, pain medication and steroids run at regular intervals. If he is to receive Vicodin, Percocet, Tylenol 3 or any other medication every six hours and he is to get it without anyone asking for it. I also need blood panels run.”
“Which ones?” For the first time it feels like Dr. Wilson is on my side.
“I’m concerned about internal bleeding so I’m being selective until we find out more.”
“We can take additional samples once we get a better idea of his condition.”
I breathe in deep and let it out slowly as taking on the child’s pain is proving more intense than I had prepared for.
“Dr. Black?” She sounds worried.
“I need birth rank, complete blood count with differential and exposure to both wolfsbane and silver. The results of those will guide what else I need.”
“Make certain those items are in his chart and put a rush on getting him into radiology.”
“What do I tell them the reason for the rush is on a child that’s been here nearly two days?” The remaining nurse asks.
“There was a mix up in his chart. He’s here under Operation Underground and internal bleeding needs to be ruled out before he can transfer to the receiving pack.” I can hear the nurse typing the information in quickly.
“I don’t do this often so you better be right about this.”
“Well I’m not done.”
“What else do you need?”
“I need to collect evidence of his current physical state.”
“Is that why you asked about me examining him?”
“Yes. He expressed a lot of fear towards being naked alone in that bathroom. Now, I didn’t have him get naked and I had no intentions of having him get naked to use the bathroom but his reaction makes having him get naked for an exam difficult with what little he managed to tell me.”
“You want me to do the exam while you document his injuries?”
“With his parents unavailable I feel that you being in the room will provide reassurance that I’m not going to do what Alpha Redmen did.”
She nods as I speak softly to Jeremy. He shakes even harder and his whimpers become persistent as I explain what’s going to happen next. He doesn’t like it and doesn’t want it to happen. He’s struggling badly with our need to force him to expose the damage created by his alpha but my hope is the stress this causes will give me the story he’s so far refused to tell.
