(Jon Jenkins POV)
It’s been a month since Jamison returned to Red Fang from the White Ridge pack. Alpha Redmen hasn’t approached Jamie about the next run so he’s been training with me, both as a warrior and a carpenter. When he’s not busy with training he’s looking for Cole. We’re all worried sick as we haven’t seen or heard from him since Jamie left him after his seizure. I’ve tried to link with him several times. I was shocked when I actually managed to connect with him two weeks ago. Unfortunately further attempts with the link have resulted in him pushing me away. At least he’s alive. It’s truly my only solace.
“Hey, dad.”
Jamie comes down the stairs into the kitchen. I open my arms wide and he immediately accepts my embrace. We’ve been doing it a lot more recently, holding each other tightly.
I’ve taken care of Jamie as my own since I found his mother, my fated mate, sixteen years ago. He was only five. I had found her a year before I transferred into Alpha Redmen’s pack. I was here as a warrior prospect and she was one of the trainers. I didn’t care for Alpha then and my feelings towards him are even worse now but because she was a trainer, Molly wasn’t allowed to leave. I bit back my dislike for the Alpha and transferred to Red Fang just to be with her when he offered me a position.
At 5’ 10”, Jamie is approaching my same height of 5’ 11”. He has his mother’s straight sandy blond hair, bright blue eyes and milky white complexion. Our two daughters and son all share in my likeness, straight chocolate brown hair with eyes to match and a lightly tanned complexion.
I tighten my hug around him before finally letting go, looking me in the eyes before backing up. I know what he’s looking for. I sigh as I shake my head, looking back at me, he does the same.
“His room is locked up tight, curtains are drawn so I don’t know if he’s in there but it’s obvious that he’s in bad shape if he’s keeping us at bay like this.”
“I’m worried too Jamie. At least I did get to talk with Dr. Carter. He can’t get into specifics as to how he’s doing or where he’s at but he did indicate that he would prefer Cole to be in the hospital. He let it slip that Alpha Redmen has changed Cole’s status to a feral rogue without the council’s approval. When I looked up council laws it indicated that such a status would allow Alpha Redmen to discontinue paying for his medical care.”
Jamie hangs his head as I know it’s not what he wanted to hear. Jamie was torn to shreds when he got in the door the night he returned. Somehow he kept it together until the first. He woke up crying hysterically in the middle of the night. His panic was so bad that I was forced to give him a shot of Valium before laying in bed with him. Holding him well beyond when he fell asleep. Molly woke me for work a few hours later but I let him sleep. Later that evening he claimed that he could feel Cole’s pain. That Kristoph had managed to kidnap him and was torturing him.
He lets out a defeated sigh as he takes a seat at the table. It’s early afternoon and work has wrapped up early for me. The younger kids are still at school and Molly won’t get done her shift in the medical wing until four.
“What’s on your mind Jamie?”
I speak softly considering the disturbing news I just gave him. He pulls out a padded envelope and hands it to me.
“Alpha Black gave this to me. It was tucked away in one of the bags he gave me. I started unpacking them after I went to Alpha Redmen. I have formally requested withdrawal from the warrior program and I received the official letter from the council recognizing my withdrawal today so I just happened upon it.”
Leaving the package on the table I stand and head over the drawer containing scissors. Once I’m seated again I cut the top off the envelope and slide the contents gently onto the table. We both cock our heads to the side curious as to the purpose of this smartphone now lying in front of me with a tangled cord on top. I shake the bag again causing a folded piece of paper to fall out. I pick the paper up and gently unfold it until a neatly, hand written letter appears beneath the folds.
Delta Jonathan Jenkins,
It has been a true pleasure working with your son, Jamie, during his visit to Crimson Dawn and I look forward to welcoming him again along with the rest of his family. Enclosed is a smartphone that I would like you to keep on you at all times. Charge it nightly and enjoy any free games you wish to download. I am the only one here with the number but I don’t mind you sharing with your family. Talk and texts are unlimited and I will keep it active until it is no longer needed. Please send a text when you receive this phone as I know Jamie is not aware of this package being in his bags and may not find it immediately upon returning home. Please don’t hesitate to contact me. I assure you that I am unlike any alpha you or Cole have ever met. I swear to you, I can help him if I can just get him back in my territory.
Sincerely,
Alpha Demetri A. Black
I pick the phone up in my hand and look over it. It’s obviously brand new but it’s compact and an early model of what’s currently out. I find the power button easily and turn it on. I’m surprised when it actually comes on. I peek at the contacts and, as he said, his number is the only one there simply listed as ‘Demetri’. I take a moment to gather my thoughts as this is certainly a change in events that I didn’t expect to happen.
“What do you think of Alpha Black and the Crimson Dawn pack?”
Every pack has rumors about them. Most of the time those rumors are made up to make the pack sound like they’re a bunch of bad asses so certain wolves end up desiring the pack while others stay away. Sometimes, like the rumors of Red Fang, they end up true.
“Alpha Black is the strictest I’ve seen of the packs I’ve been to but he’s also the kindest. He sticks to his word and as long as you’re not an overall ass hole, you get along with him fine. Dallas, Richard and Andrew all received physical punishment for assaulting me and reported to the council.”
“He actually reports to the council?”
Jamie nods as he continues the conversation.
“He proved his word to Cole several times and by the time Cole and I left, Alpha Black didn’t want him to leave. Combine that with the strictness I saw, yes I believe if he said it was a reportable offense he reported it.”
I’m nodding my head as I leave the table to plug the phone in on the kitchen counter.
“You’ve been to four packs. Of those packs, if you were offered a second run, which lasts a year and gives you a chance at a position in the pack, if all four offered who would you pick?”
“Crimson Dawn.”
I freeze where I stand, shocked that he didn’t even have to think about it.
“Why?” I keep it simple considering the shock I’m in right now.
“It has a lot to do with how he treated Cole. How he treated everyone really. Cole was a person, someone to be desired and helped when things got tough for him. Even after Cole ended up with a broken arm Alpha Black refused to send him home.”
“Cole broke his arm? How did that happen?”
I’ve finally started moving towards the table again after sending Alpha Black a text giving him a good time to call.
