(Jamison’s POV)
“Stop it! Just leave me be! Why isn’t it enough that you’ve abandoned me here with the sole purpose of forcing me to miss your deadline! What have I done to deserve this torture!”
I startle awake as my best friend screams. The last four days have been an utter nightmare for Cole as his father has found the perfect way to torture him without ever touching him. His unrelenting links with Cole has left him exhausted and riddled in pain and that’s just the physical effects. On one of his father’s longer breaks yesterday, he managed to tell me some of the things that Alpha Redmen has told him.
He started early in the morning Tuesday randomly rattling off all the things he plans to do to Cole when he gets home. Despite his inconsistency with exactly what he’s planning on doing or using on Cole, one thing has remained the same, he’s not coming to get us. Cole’s deadline will expire and his welcoming will be “the best yet.” Cole did report that his father has been consistent with the idea of “three days with his brother, Kristoph”.
Apparently, Andre found out how close Cole came to dying and has been distancing himself from his father’s actions. He was granted permission to leave the pack temporarily but that’s all Cole was able to tell me. I don’t even know how he knows about it as it seems to go against everything his father would want from him.
I’ve been in constant contact with Alpha Demetri since it started which has resulted in Alpha Andrew moving us into a room with a nebulizer already hooked up. He comes in every few hours to check on him during the day but there’s not much he can do outside of giving him Ativan and Vicodin. I stand from my bed. Now that he’s quiet a noticeable wheeze has settled into his chest. I make my way across the dimly lit room to the box of albuterol sitting on the tall dresser situated next to the closet doors. The digital clock’s hauntingly green glow indicates that it’s barely 2am.
I twist the top off as I silently make my way to the head of Cole’s bed. He’s sobbing uncontrollably as I pour the contents of the tube into the reservoir. I pick the foam lined mask up off the hook and turn the machine on. The soft hum of the machine and the hiss of medication are nearly instant as I walk two feet to the center of his bed and sit on the edge. He tenses with loud whimpers as he grabs the side of the bed. His hands are covered with self-inflicted bruises in the shape of his front teeth. It took me a day and half to figure out how to stop him from biting as the pain produced by his father’s link intensified. Now I have a bitter tasting medication that I spray onto his hands that’s keeping the wounds clean while also discouraging him from adding to them.
I run my hand through his hair several times encouraging him to turn his head. Once he’s in a position that I can use I place the mask lightly on his face but it’s never that easy. He yelps and screams as he’s too exhausted and disoriented from reality to accept the help I’m silently giving him.
“Don’t make me tie you.”
I speak for the first time in the hour since he woke me. My voice is deep, firm, and with a no nonsense tone that freezes him instantly. It’s the only thing that I’ve been able to work out to keep his father from knowing the help he’s receiving during this endless attack. I position the mask over his nose and mouth again, careful not to put too much pressure on the ng-tube that Alpha Andrew was forced to place. He sedated him for a few hours yesterday to give him a break from his father and had Beta Mike and I help place the tube.
Cole’s last meal was Monday night and it’s been difficult for him to even keep the tube feeds down. Alpha Andrew is supposed to be coming up with a plan to rid Cole of his father without resorting to harshness that Alpha Demetri engaged in but I haven’t been briefed on what his plan is yet. The door slowly cracks open. I’m surprised to see Alpha Andrew on the other side.
“Cole, you’re going to have to give some sort of indicator that he’s listening as I have an important message that he needs to hear. Alpha Redmen, are you listening?”
Cole’s hand shakes as he forms a thumbs up. I watch Alpha Andrew set the tray he’s carrying on the dresser beside the clock.
“Up.”
He has a commanding edge to his voice. I stand and walk over to the office chair that’s in the room. I push it to the center before sitting.
“I will be submitting you, Cole. I can’t have your wolf fighting or interrupting the message.”
Cole whines lightly but doesn’t move. This has become a scary yet common reaction for him. I watch silently as he slips his hand into Cole’s before snaking his hand to the back of his neck. I watch my friend fight with every ounce he has left, yelping and screaming with the contact. I look away as my tears fall. It hasn’t been long enough since I’ve seen him so frail and terrified. Alpha Andrew waits patiently for exhaustion to set in allowing him to use Cole as a channel to communicate with Alpha Redmen.
“Alpha Charles Redmen, I am Alpha Andrew Moore medical director of Ridge General Hospital. You have chosen to leave your son here through the deception of the prospect program. Alpha Whiteman and I have been in contact with the council and your son has been removed from the prospect program due to your decision to file for a ferality trial in April. You knew he was to return home once he was released from Crimson Dawn. Now not only have you deceived the council on your intentions when you requested the change in his transportation home but you have used this opportunity to commit torture. You will be receiving a visit from the council where they will assign the appropriate sanctions for your atrocities. Due to the rapid decline your son has experienced during your attack, I have received permission from the council to use medication to temporarily sever your ability to link with him.”
“No!”
Cole suddenly comes to life with the news that Dr. Moore has approval to medically sever his father’s link. He raises himself off the bed, tossing Alpha Andrew to the floor as he attempts to flee the room only to find himself tangled in what little medical intervention Alpha Andrew has managed to force upon him.
“Cole, you need to calm down!”
I shout trying to break through his sudden panic as I block off the door.
“No, he knew you would contact them. He knew they would give you permission. He’s been telling me for days the torture I will go through when it’s given to me and he’s still in my head. Please don’t do this to me.”
He is literally crying as he begs for a different solution.
“I’m not doing it right now.” Alpha Andrew tries to calm him.
Stepping in front of him, he wraps Cole in a hug as he resumes screaming and fighting the contact being given. Dr. Moore waits patiently for Cole’s terror to subside before guiding him back to the bed.
“Stay still Cole. You’ve pulled that ng-tube. I need to set it back down into your stomach and stop the bleeding pulling it caused.”
He states calmly as he walks away through the bedroom door. I walk over to my friend, slipping my hand between his hand and his hair, encouraging him to grab me.
“I know it’s hard to trust him but I think this is the best solution for the time we’re here.”
“I can’t, Jamie. He’s been telling me from the start of this attack that this was the only way to get rid of him and that he will fight it so it hurts me worse than simply taking it.” He whispers his fears.
“Is he still with you?” Alpha Andrew comes back with an absorbent mat and a bag.
“No sir. Drunk bastard finally passed out.”
“It’s a really hard medication to take no matter how you take it but it will be easier on you if we can get it in you while he’s not with you. It will take several high doses as shots to get him completely blocked but once he’s blocked we can put you on the pills. The maintenance dose is quite a bit lower so the nausea shouldn’t be as big of a problem but it is important to start the medication while he’s not linked to you.” Alpha Andrew explains gently.
I’m surprised when he nods his head, agreeing to receive the shots.
“I want to start with removing this feeding tube. Jamie, he’s going to need help coping with the effects of the shot until his wolf is able to better normalize not having the link.”
“Yes sir.”
