"He said ‘How could you fail me like this? I had it perfect. I smelled the moment Cole’s wolf slipped into a coma and allowed David to do whatever he wanted for two hours. You lied to me. You told me you wanted a crack at him when he only had one more big beating left in him. I should have known with the number of times you’ve interrupted my punishments that you went the wrong way when I sent you to camp. Instead of beating him, you helped him. Instead of killing him and dumping him where he could never be found you released him. Moved him in secret to Goddess only knows where until he was healed enough to go rogue. You are a disgrace to this pack. You are the reason your mom, Kristoph, and I are being removed from the territory. Do you know why I killed your father? Because the bastard was putting a case together to prove that I was abusing you and Ashley. Yet that wasn’t enough. Somehow he got wind of what my plans for the pup created by your mom’s infidelity were and he planned on not only taking you and Ashley but that pup as well before kicking me and my family to the curb.’
His lovely speech had the obvious sounds of him beating Andre. I could hear the grunts from being punched or kicked through the entire thing. I woke up before he was finished.”
“Has that happened since?”
“No.” He shakes his head. “But several different dreams involving him have made it nearly impossible to sleep.”
Several tears slide down his cheeks.
“I wanted to return to the warmth and comfort of the Shadowlands pack but that dream, which wasn’t a dream, happened the day I turned around. I couldn't stomach going back north.”
The pitch of his voice changes as he breaks down. I’m certain this fight protecting my sister has a lot to do with his willingness to tell a stranger such personal information but it helps me to help him. He crosses his arms on top of the table, laying his head on top. The movement of his shoulders is the only indication of his steady cry as he has silenced all sound. I manage to move where I’m sitting to the chair closest to him.
“Let me hug you.”
I whisper as I attempt to slide my arm between him and the table. I smile slightly when he literally jumps into my arms, laying his head on my shoulder as he cries. I hold him silently as long as he needs, only letting go when I feel his desire to sit up.
“I’m sorry.” He whispers.
“Don’t be.” I pat his shoulder as I shake my head. Despite our long hug just a few moments earlier he’s visibly distressed by the action.
“It seems you have some strict ways of functioning.” I mention as I point to the bottle of water in his hand. “Can you tell me anything about them?” To my surprise he nods easily.
“When I first got with the Lerouxs I had a very difficult time with eating or drinking anything that wasn’t sealed. I don’t know why but it was difficult to convince myself that it hadn’t been poisoned when it was in a glass or on a plate.”
“Anything else.”
“I’m afraid of needles and the hospital. Terrified of being naked in front of anyone. Bad things happen when I’m naked.”
“I’m sorry you’ve had such a rough go in life.” He shakes his head.
“I’m not even certain where it comes from. Just like when I told Alpha Cassius that alphas don’t cry, they don’t yelp. I’m still struggling with the idea that werewolves even exist and I call myself an alpha.”
I nod thoughtfully as it’s obvious his amnesia is very deep but his brain washing is even deeper.
“I truly wish this was a better pack. My sister and I are very kind and we will help you for as long as we can but your stay here must be at a minimum.”
“Why’s that?” He asks nervously trying to get up from his chair.
“Take it easy, Cole. I promise, our house and our land is safe. The Purple Mountain territory, specifically Alpha Draven, is not. This pack will harm you more than help you. That's why I’m emphasizing a short visit here.”
“You?” He looks into my eyes, his eyes filled with fear.
“I will not hurt you but I do need to figure out who you are so I would like to do a DNA test on you. I can get a swab from the hospital and rub it against your cheeks instead of drawing blood. It will take a little longer to match you in the database to identify you but as soon as we know who you are I can get you back to where you belong.”
He nods easily, seemingly relieved that I introduced something that doesn’t involve needles.
“Are you ready to head upstairs? I’ll carry your pack just let me know of any further assistance you need.”
He finishes the bottle of water before he stands from the chair. He looks around silently until I reach my hand out.
“I’ll take care of that.”
He hands it to me so I can dispose of it in the recycling can.
“This way.”
I gesture with my hand towards the doorway of the kitchen leading into the living room. Just on the other side are the stairs for the second floor. He locates them easily without me saying anything and slowly makes his way up. He stops several times making a concussion a significant concern but I remain silent until we reach the top.
“I need you to go to the end of the hall. I have two guest bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms in each. You can decide which side you want to be on.”
He makes his way slowly down the hall and turns to his left, timidly reaching out to turn the knob. Finding it unlocked, he pushes the door open and steps inside. I follow behind him, trying to give him space without putting myself out of reach should he need help. He turns on the light and slowly walks around the large room.
“Do you have any clothing in your bag?”
I ask. The bag feels light compared to the general bulkiness of it.
“Yes sir. It has my inhalers, a laptop with a plug, a light blanket and a few shirts, shorts, boxers and socks. I tried to pack light but still with everything I could need.”
“Do you have any money?”
I stop as I realize what kind of question that may come across as.
“A little.” He keeps it simple.
“What I would like you to do is take a shower so all the blood and dirt gets washed away making your injuries from the fight easier to see. The worst of the bruising won’t show for a day or two but I can usually tell where a bruise is going to appear. Main thing I’m looking for tonight is any swelling that’s indicative of a fracture, sprain or dislocation. I understand that being naked in front of me is going to be difficult for you but mostly naked is what I need.”
He shakes his head hard, I can hear his breathing tighten as he starts to panic from the thought of what I explained I need.
“Let’s not think too much about this now. The big thing is getting you into the shower. Can you walk with me inside the bathroom? I’d like you to look it over and tell me what you need to get cleaned up.”
