(Cole’s POV)
It’s been nearly twelve weeks since my father deceived the council and left Jamie and I at White Ridge. Dad took advantage of my closeness to the pack for six weeks, using my abnormal link for the sadistic pleasure of causing me both physical and mental pain. It took two weeks after Dr. Moore stopped giving me the blocking medication for my father to finally tire of the energy he was putting into creating my misery.
It took several days of him leaving me alone for us to believe that he might actually be done. That’s when Jamie finally opened up to me about the plan Alpha Whiteman was encouraging us to form which includes the plans Jamie wanted to create before we even left. I am ashamed of myself for not listening to my beta sooner.
Alpha Whiteman’s plan is to give me access to an emergency cabin five miles into the woods. I would only be able to carry a single pack with my most important items but the alpha did reassure me that if I successfully ran to the cabin before all the prospects from my pack left he would not dispose of the items Alpha Black gave me. He did not explain to Jamie how the items would be given back to me but I’m certain Alpha’s biggest concern is me getting out of here before I’m forced back to my father.
For the month that I’ve been free of my father I’ve been able to start eating again. I’ve adopted a similar schedule as I had at Crimson Dawn, eating leftovers from breakfast and lunch from the fridge while joining Alpha Andrew and Beta Michael for dinner. They don’t have much in the way of family which makes it a smaller, thus easier dinner for me to participate in. I’ve managed to gain five of the ten pounds that I lost during his six week attack.
We received word from Alpha Whiteman that my father’s bus will arrive Friday after lunch activating the plan Jamie and I have worked on for the last four weeks. We were given a map of the territory three weeks ago. We have made the trip several times to the cabin since then, taking packs filled with food and water to it so I can stay comfortably several days if it takes Alpha Black some time to come retrieve me. Jamie has even shifted into his wolf in order to mark the best path to get there, my only fear is that my father may know of our plans.
While I may always know when he’s in my head without him speaking, being close enough to link with me means he’s able to link with others in my pack. While Jamie didn’t notice the extra smell of a werewolf in the woods that last two times we went to the cabin, I did. It gave me an uneasy feeling of being watched which is why I’m not waiting until Friday to leave.
“Are you certain you don’t want me to come with you?”
Jamie asks as I pack the single pack that’s carrying my medication and a portable, battery operated nebulizer that Alpha Andrew gave me. It’s a lot easier to travel with than the normal sized one.
“No. If what I smelled is correct someone may be out there waiting for me to attempt to run from here. I can’t risk you getting hurt before we get back to Red Fang. You’re going to need all your strength to help me after my welcoming party cripples me.”
“You really think it’s going to be that bad?”
There's a nervous waiver to his voice.
“I’ve never been out of the territory longer than six months and I’ve now passed that by three.” I sigh, frustrated with the situation.
“That wasn’t your fault. He left you here.”
“Think about who you’re talking about. Has that ever made a difference?”
“Text me when you get to the cabin.”
He hugs me tight after I’ve shrugged my hood and pack on. I can’t help but notice how much he’s gained in height. He’s now nearly the same as me, five foot ten inches.
He follows me quickly as I leave the medical room we’ve been staying in. I’ve never been motivated to move so quickly except when fleeing my father. I guess running back to Alpha Black is the same thing.
I navigate through the combination of Alpha Andrew’s house and the pack’s clinic easily and silently making it to the front door. I step outside into the breezy October morning, smelling the air deeply. I go into a partial shift enhancing my sense of sight and smell before looking and smelling again. I know someone was following us yesterday and it’s imperative that I get to that cabin.
We’ve actively texted with Alpha Black about our plan but I have begged him not to make a move until I actually pull it off as nothing has ever gone the way it should with me. Goddess Diana simply hasn’t been that forgiving towards me.
We jog lightly to the edge of the woods, stopping briefly to again, verify that no one is following us.
‘Are you certain you don’t want me to follow along?’
I wince with a light whine at the mild headache his brief link creates.
‘No. I’m certain I smelled Dallas out here the other night and the last thing I need is for you to get tangled up in double punishment for helping me run.’ I explain with a sigh.
I kneel down, the cold wetness of the ground easily penetrating the cloth of my sweatpants. Wrapping my arms around the neck of the light gray wolf in front of me. I bury my nose into his fur as he lays his head on my shoulder, taking my time to breathe his scent committing it firmly to memory.
I linger a while longer with my friend, my brother in the truest sense, scratching his ears softly. He licks my hand before using his muzzle to lift and point my hand towards the woods. I nod silently knowing that any sound made this early in the morning will attract unwanted attention.
I turn and make my way to the tree line, taking my time to smell out the trail Jamie left before carefully entering the woods. I check my watch, 3am. That means I should reach the cabin by five, a few hours before dawn. I look back one more time, verifying that Jamie is staying where I’ve left him. He sits and merely watches, waiting for me to pull myself away in my attempt to return to the only place that has felt like home.
