I sit back again with a sigh.
“Jamie woke me up around eleven. He knew if I didn’t get started I wouldn’t be done on time. I was completely exhausted as dad had taken to using the link at night to tell me how he’s given Kristoph permission to keep me for three days.
I accidentally told him too much which put me in a really bad state of mind. I wanted Jessa and the thought of being with Kristoph caused me to throw up. When I finished I leaned against the tub, the coolness often helps with the pain as long as it doesn’t trigger the spasms.”
I take a break, closing my eyes as the tears involuntarily start.
“Cole?” Alpha sounds concerned.
“Jessa started working with me on how to get to the astral plane during the two months between the brawl and my leaving.”
I start back slowly trying to hide my desire to cry.
“She was shocked to discover how easily I could get there. It was difficult for her to hear how I’ve been able to visit with my wolf like that since I was a child. It’s a safe place that I often go when my reality is too difficult to be in.”
“Did she tell you why she was shocked?”
“She’s more concerned than shocked, really. She said that visiting with my wolf the way I describe can be a concerning sign that we never merged after we shifted. She walked me through the steps of creating and entering the channel. It’s an astral plane that exists beyond the one our wolves live on. Only certain wolves can create the door necessary to enter the plane and it tends to be very painful as you’re forcing your spiritual being to enter a plane that doesn’t naturally exist.
She said that it took Damian a long time to finally enter the plane and he had a migraine for nearly a week afterwards but now that he’s opened the door and entered the channel just once he can now communicate with her at any distance.”
“That explains a lot.” Alpha sounds relieved hearing my story.
“Did you enter the plane?” He asks after a brief pause.
“I’m not certain. It took some time to convince my wolf to join me as he feared the pain our previous attempts caused. Each step closer to the door made it increase until I opened the door. I was met by a blinding light before it felt like my head exploded. That’s the last I remember until I woke up three days ago.”
“I will speak to Jessa again. I believe that you may have indeed entered the channel and connected with her because she came to me. She was very upset. I had a hard time believing her when she said that you were hurt until an hour later when Andrew called.
Now, the reason you are very much in the attention of the council isn’t simply because of your seizure. While it is interesting that you had one when you were supposed to be going home, what you don’t know about is Alpha Whiteman was the first one at the scene. He witnessed you having the seizure and helped Jamie get you away from the tub and your head on a folded towel so you didn’t injure yourself while it was happening. He was on his way to get you. My understanding is that he was going to bring you to his office so that he, Andrew and I could discuss the amendments to existing laws on torture and ferality. To inform you that you were not going to leave for Red Fang.”
I’m stunned into silence. I look from Dr. Moore to Alpha Whiteman desperately trying to figure out what it is that I just heard.
“I’m not going home?” I’m shaking my head as I try to understand what is going on.
“My father said that he wouldn’t leave without me. It would have never worked.”
I whisper knowing that I’m dangerously close to arguing with them.
“Yes that’s true.” I startle hard as Alpha Whiteman starts to speak.
“The pack house is very secure. While I was hesitant to place you into secured confinement within its walls, after our meeting explaining what was going on, that was my plan. I was going to escort you to a comfortable, secure room on the first floor that only I can get into but you couldn’t get out of.”
“You were going to imprison me?” I don’t like the sound of this plan at all.
“It’s the only thing I have that anyone your father sent to retrieve you couldn’t get into outside of my actual prison but I assure you, it’s much more comfortable. Plush bed, internet, one of those smart tv’s with the built in Roku that I’ve never figured out, full bathroom, small kitchen with stocked refrigerator and cabinets. You could comfortably stay in that room for days and take care of your needs as it’s a safe room. Designed exactly for that purpose, to keep everyone out.”
I nod in understanding but I’m not anymore comfortable with his plan.
“You said that you discovered new laws or amendments to existing laws that would allow you to forcibly prevent him from leaving here?” Dr. Moore rejoins the conversation.
“Yes, Xavier contacted me and pointed out where they were hidden. The pictures that I took of his condition when he first got to my pack are enough probable cause to remove him from Red Fang’s care.”
“What is this amendment? I’ve been looking for the last several months for something, anything that I could use to send him back to you.”
“The amendment that was made reads; if a wolf of any age shows tangible evidence of torture while on another alpha’s land, that alpha, no matter the wolf’s status, may, forcibly if necessary, remove that wolf from the care of their alpha and subsequently their pack.”
“When was this amendment passed?” Dr. Moore asks, shock lacing his voice.
“It passed quietly in January. Xavier was pissed when he called me and told me he stumbled upon this change. Any time laws or amendments to existing laws pertaining to the abuse, neglect and/or torture of wolves are passed then the acting liaisons for abused and tortured wolves are the first to receive a copy of the changes in writing. When he went to them with the anonymous pictures of obvious torture, they shrugged him off which gave him more than a few colorful expletives about them and their negligence.”
“Which law is it present in?”
“They finally admitted that it’s attached to several laws but the two that Xavier found were on the tail end of the protection from ongoing torture law and, surprisingly, it was integrated into the request for investigation of ferality, which is another thing I need to speak about.”
Alpha sighs over the phone giving me an ominous feeling.
“Xavier, Angela, and I all looked hard for the information but the council is staying hushed about who spearheaded the change and why but another amendment was passed quietly the first of March, which tells me either they didn’t want anyone to know about it or they knew that someone they needed to trap into an investigation was about to file for one. Either way, they no longer drop the fertility trial once the application is completed. The only time it is dropped is if the application is incomplete and they cannot make contact with the alpha filing the information. It doesn’t matter how much the council or committee believes that the wolf can not possibly be feral, or if the information is obviously made up, all wolves go to trial.”
“Is that why he got a lawyer? He found out about this change before you did?”
My voice shakes with the sudden dread that has sunken deep within my stomach.
“It is possible that’s why he sought a lawyer but I can’t be certain. What I can tell you is that the timeframe for the investigation has lengthened considerably which is why I’m not giving you a choice.”
