Saturday, November 10th Pt. 3
“I explained that my knowledge is minimal at best. I’ve had no relationship, no personal interaction with you since being promoted to lead doctor of the medical wing, but that didn’t prevent me from noticing the different, painfully different life you lived considering you’re the alpha’s son.
The first time I met you was when Rebecca claimed that you raped her until she was pregnant. I think you were seventeen or eighteen. I had only started in that position about a year before. I noticed immediately when speaking to her that she was fabricating the story. It made me wonder about her motive behind reporting you.
Of course there was no mistaking what was happening in Alpha's office. Everyday you were dragged to his office protesting your innocence. It only took me three days to figure out the timing and I started listening by the door.
When he gave me access to big brother he wanted me to participate in the investigation involving the assaults and rapes of other pack members. He felt that both were getting out of hand even for what he was allowing to happen but I started investigating you as well.
I’ve been watching you, helping you incognito as much as I can. I left you notes, warning you of the poisoning of your food. I’ve left antibiotics, reversals for the emetics and laxatives, non-perishable food and drinks, vitamins and first aid supplies. All under the dark of night.
I know about the kids staying with you. I have waited in the bushes and given them small bags to take to you. I could only hope that being poisoned by your father wouldn’t prevent you from accepting what I secretly gave.
I’ve watched your interaction with others the same way. You are terrified to even sit with anyone when you manage to use the dining hall. I haven’t seen you eat there for nearly two years which makes me think the worst. That just like the wing, you are no longer allowed to use it.”
He takes a break as he starts moving me gently. I whimper hard as I know he’s preparing to roll me towards my back.
“I know your movements are limited. I know you're in pain. Try to relax. I’m going to help get you on to your side before getting you into a bear hug to roll you to your back. Scream, yelp, curse. Whatever you need to not fight me as fighting will make it worse.”
He has me on my side and his mate has taken the pillow I was hugging from my arms. The bed dips with his weight as he wraps his arms under mine and brings them up to my head.
“On the count of three I’m going to finish moving you so you’re mostly on your back. Emily is going to help guide your legs. Ready?”
‘No. Please. You’re going to hurt me.’
I beg as he starts his count.
“One…., two…. three.”
With a groan and a scream he picks me up slightly and finishes the roll onto my back. It only takes a few seconds to complete but the pain is intense as I whimper and cry. My hand rakes across his ribs as I desperately try to push him away.
“Don’t fight Cole. Follow your instincts. Seek my scent.”
Something about what he says feels strange to me. Even though that was a common thing I desired with Alpha Black being back in the territory has changed everything and I simply want to get away.
“Cole please. I have done this very thing twice a day for the last three days and every time you have sought my scent. You're a werewolf, there’s nothing wrong with scenting anyone at any time.”
He sounds almost desperate to get me to submit to his request. It’s only as I stop fighting his hold that I realize he’s guiding me to his neck. I’m still in his hold as his thumb runs a predictable pattern behind my ear.
“I’m sorry these are still so painful for you. I promise I only move you like this after you’ve received morphine and Vicodin. You are the key Cole. The key to the collapse of this pack. It is only after it falls that the true leader, the one that will lead the ones who deserve and desire a better life, will rise from the ashes.
I never finished telling you of my meeting but I do feel it’s important for you to know. I was fresh out of medical school when I returned to this pack. I was a young lad of twenty-five, I had my luna and had accepted a job offer with Alpha Dillion Redmen. He was the coronated next in line when I left and had been coronated into the position two years before I had returned. Their father passed suddenly which delayed the council’s response to his death.
Your father was never meant to be alpha and seemed happy with the position his twin gave him. His coronation was scheduled for the first new moon of the year but something happened between them. Your father attacked your Uncle Dillion. Even though Alpha Dillion had always been stronger, faster and smarter than your father, your father fought dirty and in the end killed him.
While I have never been able to substantiate it, rumor has it that the blind, unforgiving rage your father expressed toward his brother, his own twin, was revenge.”
‘Revenge for what?’
I whisper in my head as I slowly recover in his hold.
“I don’t know. Many rumors have floated around. Seven years previously the omegas in charge of the cleaning and repairs of the pack house often talked about how your mom took on the scent of your Uncle Dillion during her first pregnancy. It was waved off as nonsense and she carried Andre and Ashley the full year. No one talked about her second pregnancy but rumors ran really wild while she was pregnant with you and your twin.”
‘What was the rumor?’
The pain has slowly ebbed away allowing Dr. Johnston to ease me out of his comforting hold.
“That her scent never changed while she was pregnant.”
‘How is that significant?’
I ask, confused as to why the scent change is even expected.
“A female’s scent will change to that of the father’s while she is pregnant. Research has found that even feral wolves will not attack a female that carries a male’s scent. They haven’t figured out why.”
‘Why didn’t mom’s scent change with Chloe and I?’
I ask slowly as I’m overcome with the desire to fall asleep.
“It was just a rumor that I heard several months before your dad killed his twin and took over the pack. Your father changed the offer Alpha Dillion made and sent me to Red General until Alpha Whitaker retired. That’s when he offered me the promotion and my first time meeting you in his office.
It’s okay to sleep, Cole. I’m not going to do anything to hurt you. I’m going to finish your bath, put a gown back on you, change your collection bags and hang a tube feed. I am glad you have woken up and even happier that you have a way to communicate with me.
I know it’s hard but don’t be shy. I promise you, I’m a friend and you have a lot more than you are aware of.”
There’s something about his reassurance that reaches deep within me. Despite the painful move to my back and the mental discomfort of the sponge bath I know I can no longer hold onto the consciousness I’ve been fighting to maintain and allow myself the peace of sleep.
