“You will stand.” I repeat a little harder than the first.
Patrick slips the padded vest that I’ve been keeping in my office over my head by the time Jeremy finds his feet. Before the pup can protest any further I take his shirt in a single motion overwhelming him with fear.
The little beta reacts with all the strengths he has, screaming as his little fists hit the padding on my chest and shoulders. Everyone in the room observes silently as Jeremy’s fight continues.
‘Grab the fleece blanket with dinosaurs on it from next door.’ I link Patrick with my next need.
“Not the face.” My voice is normal and my tone neutral as I gently redirect his fight away from anything that could hurt me.
Through his screams I can hear his apology for hitting his sister like this, his sadness over not being with his family unless supervised by Angela, Julie, Lilly or I. His tiny soul holds so much confusion, frustration and anger over what happened and his brain simply isn’t mature enough to handle such big emotions.
Patrick comes back just as the little man is nearing his limit. I take the blanket with a nod of gratitude just before Patrick takes the vest away. I wrap it around his shoulders. Scooping him up again he fully collapses against my shoulder, capable of nothing else but crying.
I take a seat, grateful that Patrick is behind it keeping it from rolling out from under me. I close my eyes as I lean my cheek against the young pup, holding him tightly in a swaddle, waiting for his exhaustion to lull him to sleep.
I am grateful for so many things at this moment as this is the very reason that Molly, Jon and I agreed that he needed me over his mother. The first time she accidentally triggered him resulted in him attacking Brittany. Even though she’s a nurse, she was ill prepared to redirect his anger and frustration. The first time she saw me trigger him she ended up in a panic attack herself, fearing much like he does, that I was going to hurt him for lashing out.
I allow my own tears to fall as he finally starts to settle. It’s a vulnerability that any alpha who desires to help the abused should be willing to show as it’s not a weakness to show that you care, that something you have done to help them hurts you as well. The room remains quiet until Jeremy’s whimpers fade and he finally drifts to sleep.
“Are you okay to continue, Demetri?” Beta Lauren asks as Patrick helps me adjust Jeremy’s position.
“Yes ma’am.” I assure her.
“What was that all about? He admitted to hitting someone, which in most packs is deserving of a spanking, but he’s completely terrified of getting spanked. You would think such terror would keep him from hitting anyone.” Alpha Matthew finally gets into the meeting.
“I realize there are going to be a lot of questions. First, I think I need to explain that while the way I dealt with his needs was very real, this was not done purposely. I have no desire to showcase the work I do to help those who have been abused or tortured.
While it was the new amendments to existing laws on torture and abuse that allowed me to remove Jeremy, his mother and sisters under emergency sanctuary status it was my knowledge of what his brother, Jamison and Jamison’s alpha, Cole Redmen are going through that prompted me to reach out to the Jenkins. It just so happened that the day Jamie found the phone I sent home with him for Jon was the day Jeremy was attacked. I submitted all the evidence I had gathered while he was at White General Hospital and combined it with what he was able to tell me. While you can’t put a six year old under oath, when his injuries match what he’s able to tell, the council is willing to listen. I have had several meetings with his mom and my in house therapist regarding the sanctuary status they all received. The council has ruled that Jeremy wasn’t simply assaulted by Alpha Charles Redmen and his son Kristoph, he was tortured.”
“Why would his alpha torture him?” Martin asks.
“You commented before that you were aware of Alpha Redmen and the Red Fang pack. Can you give me some details on what you know?” Martin nods as he begins to speak.
“They are rumored to be an overwhelmingly bad group to work with. My own experience with the group resulted in me reporting several of them to the council for assault, offensive touching and rape.”
“Which pack do you preside over?” I can’t help but wonder if he crossed paths with Cole.
“Bluetail.” I nod silently.
“Do you know anything about Alpha Redmen’s sons?”
My explanation of Jeremy’s torture will be easier if I know how much is actually known about the Redmen’s. Martin shakes his head.
“All I know is that Alpha Redmen created laws that many alphas don’t follow anymore. It’s rumored that he will actually give permission to delta and higher male warriors to rape delta and higher female warriors.”
“How can a leader do that?” Lauren can’t help but interrupt.
“While it’s not my job to confirm or deny the rumors, the only way for you to understand the circumstances under which I removed Jeremy and his family is to understand that the rumors are true.”
A hush falls over the meeting with the revelation of truth.
“While I can not explain why, with all the trouble I’ve had with Red Fang, I have continued to work with them in the prospect program, I have, until now, only worked with them in that manner.
During my last run I had the pleasure of meeting two very good individuals from that pack. They are the individuals I named earlier. Alpha Cole Redmen is Charles Redmen’s youngest son….”
I have to stop a moment as the loss of my opportunity to keep him from the hell he’s currently in still weighs upon me fiercely.
“Cole has been neglected, abused and tortured from a very early age. Treatment that old school alpha’s normally inflict on the oldest, not the youngest. As I also mentioned, Jamison Williams is Cole’s fated beta and his loyalty to his alpha has cost him, his father and now his baby brother, quite severely.
You see, Cole has been branded a sexual predator at his home pack. The truth of what’s going on I am aware of but it’s not something that I can discuss. What is important is that Alpha Redmen is attempting to create as much false evidence against Cole as he can to ultimately justify killing Cole before the council can investigate the pack.”
“What does that have to do with Jeremy?” Lauren whispers.
“Cole lived with the Jenkins for a year when Jeremy was a year old. My best guess is that Alpha Redmen believed that Jeremy was too young to put up much fight in giving false testimony against Cole. What happened to Jeremy was classified as torture due to the school being able to provide evidence that Jeremy had been in Alpha Redmen’s custody for six of the eight hours he should have been in school that day and because Jeremy has apologized endlessly for not lying.”
I take a moment to allow everyone to understand the gravity of what I’m dealing with.
“What can be done to help?” Alpha Alister, the quietest and most senior of the group finally speaks up.
“Have you ever heard of Operation Underground?”
