Wednesday, May 8th Pt. 3
“Did they tell you when this was?”
“Early February when most small game animals are still hibernating. They established a meeting area and spread out. They each killed two hares and met her back at the designated place. She led them to a large shack. It was in a stage of disrepair that warranted destroying it but she showed them a hole at the backside. She used it to duck inside. The most senior of the group followed and instructed the others to wait outside until they were told to enter. He felt that all of them coming in would be overwhelming.”
“Did he finish the story?”
“You know what happened?”
I nod.
“He contacted me when they tracked her down. I guided them on the best way to interact with her. Encouraged them to help her hunt. I know winter is the hardest time to find food and based on what she told me, her and the other orphans are not being properly cared for. Allowing her to hunt and encouraging our guardsmen to assist her is in an effort to convince her that our pack wants to help. That we are a safe place for these pups to find homes in.”
“What about me?”
“It pains me to suggest this but considering she’s the oldest one there she is critical to getting the rest out. I believe she’s your mate. Unfortunately with that being the potential I must ask that you refrain from seeking her until all the orphans are out of that hell.”
I’m surprised when he shakes his head.
“No?” I ask gently with consideration towards his admission to fearing me. “What alternative would you like to attempt?” He shakes his head again.
“I can’t stay away.”
“I can give you a very mild dose of silvex. It will make it easier to control your wolf as well as any sexual desires.”
“No!”
He nearly screams. He’s damn near frantic just trying to comprehend what’s going on. I take my seat belt off and move closer to him.
“Don’t fight, Day.” I try to calm him as I pull him close to me.
“I’m sorry. I’ve been trying for months to form a plan and there’s only one that makes sense. I need to do what Cohen has done.”
“What has Cohen done?” I know he hears the concern in my voice.
“He doesn’t want you to know he broke command. I’m the only one he’s told and that’s only because everybody in the crew believes she’s my mate based on my reaction to her scent.”
“Day, if he’s helping her then he has nothing to fear from breaking command. If he doesn’t know that he shouldn’t fear me then I need to meet with him and go over my expectations with him.”
I try to ease my son’s apprehension towards telling me.
“After the first meeting, he memorized where the old wood shack was. He would shift into his wolf and position himself at the border. The shack is a straight line about a mile from the tree line. He took the time to watch and learn what kind of border patrol they had and if he could cross without consequence. After a week he realized they have no border patrol, just the occasional rogue that had moved into the pack going for a run and you can smell them quite distinctly before you ever see them. He spent months hunting at night and leaving the meat just inside the border. He can tell by the smell that she’s the one retrieving it. After he established consistency, he started leaving his scent on the game he left behind. Once he was certain she wasn’t rejecting it he moved it closer to the shed before backing off but waiting for her to come get it. That’s as close as he’s gotten outside of that first time he was allowed to enter the shack. He’s tried several times to lay behind the animal but she won’t approach. He said something that I can’t get out of my head.”
“What’s that?” I’m shocked as tears start to fall down his face.
“What does rape smell like?” He whispers.
“I’m sorry, Day.”
I hold him tightly as I did feel when speaking to her that she might be old enough to have that horror forced upon her without crippling her.
“It’s a difficult thing to pin down but mostly it’s the scent that comes from unprotected intimacy combined with the scent of blood, fear and pain. Sometimes shame can produce a scent depending on the level of brainwashing that’s going on.”
“I need to get to her. Gain her trust so she gives up the pups so I can get her out as quickly as possible. He’s going to kill her dad.”
He looks at me as he speaks the truth no mate wants to acknowledge.
“That’s why Jacob came two years ago.”
“Jacob?” I’ve caught his attention even though he doesn’t seem to remember.
“Yes sir. Declan Jacob, the man you nearly killed during summer training at the border.”
“You had my ass for that.”
“Yes I did. He begged me to forgive you. He told me about what you said. Mentioned that you sounded afraid of me, something I never want to hear.”
“You still beat my ass.”
“Yes I did as there was a lesson that you needed to remember.”
“Thank you.” His whisper surprises me.
“For spanking you?” My voice is incredulous with surprise.
“No sir. I’ve feared your spankings ever since the first one at ten. My only bare bottom one was at twelve for trying to help Brian and you forgave the one I rightfully earned when I was nearly sixteen. My thank you is because you did forgive my trespassing while also teaching the lesson.”
“How’s that?” I can hear the shame in my voice from the reminder of my own mistake.
“You gave me half my age at half your strength with my pants on.”
“Despite your fear you didn’t fight me.”
I run my hand through his hair as he starts to calm, his head on my shoulder.
“It’s going to be a rough road if you choose this path but if you’re mates, then upon meeting her you should be able to link with her. She told me that she can channel with any alpha. I’m hopeful that even with her link broken she’ll be able to communicate with you at a distance. If you can gain her trust enough to get close, what’s your plan?”
“Get to know the kids, their names so we know when they’re all out. Then I’m going to rip his throat out.”
The last portion is growled as his fear turns to anger.
“Thus the reason for the rage room.” I mutter quietly as Parker pulls into the parking lot.
