Sunday May 12th Pt. 7
I sigh in relief as I finally pull up to Shadowlands gate. It’s been a long two and a half hours but at least the last hour was a peaceful one. I honk the horn twice quickly as I know the wolf on duty and he’s quite the sleeper.
He slowly rises to his feet, looking out the windows for whoever is disturbing his slumber. I wave as soon as he looks my way. He smiles and waves while mouthing a sorry. He turns the key to activate the motor and pushes the button that pulls the gate open. I wave in thanks and start pulling forward before the gate finishes. Colton stirs subtly as the Jeep starts moving again.
“Take it slow, my brother. We’re about five minutes from the house.”
“The pack house?” There’s a hint of nervousness despite his groggy state.
“No sir. Even though you struggle with the concept of being a werewolf you still have the instinct of fearing the alpha. I feel that pushing your fear too much will cause you to flee so I have asked Cassius to back off.”
“What does that mean?” He’s reacting opposite of the comfort I thought the news would bring. “He’s going to be mad before we meet. I can’t be here.”
I stop the Jeep in the middle of the deserted road. It’s times like these that I wish the child protection locks were on the front passenger door as well. Putting the Jeep in park I turn my attention to him.
“Colton,” I reach across the seat and place my hand on his right shoulder, stopping his increasingly panicked movements. “Cass isn’t like that. He understands why I made the request and has agreed to the arrangement. You are staying with me, in my house, with my wife and son. Please Colton, try to relax. We are a sanctuary pack and all we want is to help you.”
He’s staring hard at my face but refuses direct eye contact.
“Please don’t leave me alone with him.”
I nod my agreement as he finally sits back against the seat. I get the Jeep moving again and within a few minutes pull into my driveway.
“Take it slow getting out of the car. I’m going to come around and help.”
“Yes sir.”
His response is back to submissiveness over panic. His door is open and he’s turned in his seat by the time I make it to him. To my surprise and relief, Sheila has come to help.
“Thank you.”
I whisper against her lips, giving her a sweet kiss. She nods silently as she holds the door.
“Slide on out. There’s going to be a lot of touch because I don’t want you to fall.”
He nods as he slides off the seat. I usher him sideways out of the way of the door. I grab the food from the Jeep and hand it off to Sheila.
“Can you put this in the fridge?”
She nods as she takes the bag and heads into the house.
“This way Colton.” I call him gently from trying to follow her.
“You just said I’m staying here with you.”
Panic starts again as I redirect him to the clinic’s entrance.
“You will be staying with me but I would like to get X-rays of your arm. I know you said you can’t do shots but I was also hoping you would reconsider.”
“A shot of what?”
He stops halfway to the door and refuses to budge any further.
“I have a pain medication called toradol. I think adding it to the Vicodin you’ve already taken will take the edge off the pain you’re feeling.”
“Are they going to hurt that bad?”
“Try to relax Colton. Let’s get inside and talk more.”
“No.” He whines as he slowly backs away.
“I’m sorry, Cole. I didn’t mean to scare you. It’s okay. We can slow down. I know your tired and being here is making you nervous.”
He shakes his head as he continues to back away.
“I’m sorry.”
It’s barely a whisper as things continue downhill fast and the worst that can happen comes around. The young wolf starts to run, something I know he can’t handle. He’s halfway between the clinic and the pack house when he yelps and screams. I slow my run as the scent of my friend and alpha dominates the air.
“Cass?”
“Yes sir. He ran right into me. It would appear that you could use some help. He’s a little on the wild side.”
“He’s not a feral Cass.” I make my observations firmly known.
“He doesn’t need to be feral for his anxiety to give him a wild edge.”
“Is everyone okay? I heard yelping.” I take my mate into my arms as she comes to us.
“Everything is okay, Sheila. He is very frightened and in a lot of pain.”
Cassius explains as he pets the young man’s head. He whimpers lightly as he struggles with the contact. I watch Cassius closely as he silently adjusts his movements into something the young man can handle.
“There it is.” He murmurs gently. “That’s where we need to be.”
The outside lights from the pack house finally come on showing me exactly what’s happening between the two of them. Colton is turned so his left side is touching Cassius. His right arm has grabbed the arm Cass has draped across his chest. To my surprise the young man has laid his head against Cassius’s arm as well. His eyes are closed and his breathing is tight. While one arm keeps Colton from fleeing the other is delicately brushing against the runaway hairs at the base of his skull.
“He’s responding a lot better than I thought he would.” I remark lightly.
“I know I promised to lay low but I was afraid of your perception of him being true. It’s not easy to help one who’s wolf has become dormant.”
“Dormant?” Sheila’s curiosity is overriding any fears she initially had.
“What’s happened to you son? It’s okay to tell me. I promise we provide sanctuary for those in need.”
I can see Colton’s mouth moving but I can’t catch what it is he’s saying resulting in a one sided conversation from Cassius.
“You are indeed one of us, son. I promise no harm will come to you here. It’s okay to talk to me.”
Sheila and I start slowly approaching, not wanting to scare him any further.
“I can’t do needles. I don’t know why but I can’t. I’m sorry I followed him. I’m sorry I came. Please just let me go.”
Colton’s panic is easily heard within his voice as Cassius gently hushes his fears.
“What did you say just before he panicked?” Cassius inquiries.
“We were on our way to the clinic. I introduced the idea of giving him a shot of toradol once the X-rays are done.”
“I don’t want them if they hurt that bad.”
He suddenly collapses his legs landing hard on his knees. He reaches out with both hands, despite one being in the sling, attempting to crawl away. He doesn’t make it anywhere as his mistake sends him into a small frenzy, yelping when pressure is put on his injured arm. Cassius quickly gathers him into his arms, forcing him to stand as he pulls him, chest to chest, into him. I watch helplessly as he struggles briefly to manipulate the young man into lying his head on his shoulder. Cass holds him tightly as he scent slowly changes into the calming fatherly scent all wolves are comforted by. He rocks his body slowly as he waits for the whimpers and cries to fade.
