Monday, May 13th Pt. 10
I lift my eyes from the screen as the scent of my mate hits my nose. I close everything up and hurry to the door not wanting any knocking to wake Cole. I step outside into the hall wrapping my arms around Ari sweeping her into a chaste kiss. She giggles as I pull away, my mom coming up from behind.
“He’s fallen back asleep. I’m trying to keep stimulus to a minimum since he ended up in three panic attacks the first hour after he woke up.”
They both nod.
“Are they giving him Valium or anything to calm his fear?”
My mom asks as we walk into the room.
“That would do the opposite of what we need him to do.”
Nurse Carol walks in behind the rest of us. Cole stirs with subtle whimpers as he attempts to curl into a ball. Carol walks over to him, petting his head in an effort to wake him gently.
“I know my first round waking you was rudely painful but I think the discomfort you’re in now is from not using the bathroom. Will you let Cassius and I help you to the room? All I ask is for you to sit. You’re on a high level of Vicodin due to the multiple breaks in your arm and I don’t want you to fall.”
She stays with him as he adjusts to her different involvement.
“I need clothes. This gown isn’t enough. You’re not the only lady here.”
“Would it be easier if Arianna and I step back out?” My mom asks.
“I’m sorry.” He whimpers after a minute of silence.
“No Colton. That’s not what she asked.” My address is stern but not angry or commanding.
“Yes ma’am. It will be very difficult for me to have Carol help me. I can’t do it with the two of you here. I’m sorry. Please don’t be mad. It’s not proper to be naked.”
“It’s okay Cole. I’ll bring some bottoms in the room so we can get those on while you sit.”
I try to calm his fears as Carol detaches the IV connection.
“Is the IV staying? My understanding is he came in with it.”
“Yes ma’am, that is correct. It took a lot of patience and an unconventional approach for Dr. Leroux to get that in. Dr. Leroux also needs to be able to continue giving him toradol for a few days.”
“Okay, so I’m going to slip a temporary sleeve over it while we get him up and moving. I’m waiting for a second antibiotic to come up from the pharmacy. It also needs to run over an hour. I know you’re eager to get out of here but Dr. Atkinson wants ultrasounds of his kidneys and bladder. Urinalysis came back with a high level of two different bacterias. They are doing a culture to find out which ones.”
She’s finished securing his IV line and starting to fold the bedding down as she finishes her explanation. He looks around the room slowly, looking for my mom and mate who have already stepped out. He maneuvers himself to the edge of the bed, hanging his legs over the side as he acclimates to the situation.
“I’m going to take your arm above the cast, Cassius is going to take the other. We are simply stabilizing you as you’ve been heavily drugged for a long portion of the day and you’re still receiving Vicodin.”
She explains our role in simple terms. He manages to slide forward enough to put his feet on the floor. I can feel him rock as he prepares to stand. With a long groan he gets to his feet and starts shuffling his way to the bathroom. Carol lets him go and I switch to walking behind him as we enter the doorway. Getting him settled is easy and I leave him to his business. I gather his boxers and sweatpants from the bag and reenter the bathroom. His eyes are closed and his breathing tight as he struggles to perform the most basic task.
“Colton, I can see that you’re struggling. My concern is the possibility of a fever. I’m going to feel your head before I help get your bottoms on.”
It’s a relief to see him nod. He doesn’t feel overly warm to my touch but it dawns on me that the Vicodin he’s on contains Tylenol which may be enough to keep a fever at bay. I’m glad that speaking my instructions softly combined with his desire for clothing results in a quick dressing allowing me to step out until he’s finished. It’s obvious that the young man is struggling with something so very basic that I feel it’s best not to make him any more uncomfortable by staying. It takes him several minutes but by the time Carol is done placing the second medication on the feeder he rings the bell requesting assistance. I knock as I enter to discover him panting heavily.
“Are you okay?”
I ask softly hoping for an honest answer. He shakes his head while keeping it bowed to the floor.
“Are you certain you don’t want to explore the flush that Carol suggested?”
“No.” He shakes his head slowly as he speaks. “I’m already on edge from the pain I’m in.”
“You’re wheezing again. Will you allow a nebulizer treatment?”
“Yes sir.” His voice shakes but he agrees to what he needs.
“Take my hand when you’re ready and I’ll help you to stand.”
I hold my left hand out for him to grab with his right. He places his hand in mine and I can feel his tugs as he rocks his body. After about thirty seconds he stops, remaining seated.
“I can’t do this without yelping.”
He lets go of my hand. He’s quiet, ashamed and on the verge of tears.
“Who said you weren’t allowed?”
“I’m an alpha. Alpha’s don’t yelp, they don’t cry.”
He looks up slowly as he realizes what he’s said.
“You don’t know where that came from, do you?” I nearly whisper.
“No sir.” His voice is just as quiet.
“Take my hand. Let’s get you up but first, what is hurting to the point of yelping?”
“My lower back and abdomen. Can you call Dr. Leroux? I feel like I’m going to hurl and it caused a lot of pain this morning. I think some of my ribs might be cracked. It took three tries to get one to work in my IV.”
“Absolutely. Let’s get you up.”
“I don’t want to. I’m sorry I’m weak. I can’t.”
“You have to.” I keep my voice calm.
“You don’t understand the trigger that it is.”
“It’s okay, Colton. I will help you. Come.”
I reach out to him again and, surprisingly, he accepts. I nod as he looks at me.
“One,” I pull his hand towards me.
“Two,” pulling him even farther.
“Three.”
I pull him hard enough to force him from his seat. His yelps echo off the walls but in just a few short seconds I have him in my arms. He immediately lays his head on my shoulder, instantly cutting off his yelps into hard persistent whimpers.
“Why do I feel so much worse than when I woke up?” He whines.
“Do you need help?” Arianna’s sweetness floats through the bathroom.
“Ari, he’s extremely modest. He’s not going to accept help from just anyone, especially a lady he’s never met. Where’s his nurse?”
I can hear her step out of the doorway and speak quietly. The door opens again and the shuffling feet of the older, heavy set woman who’s been caring for him walks in.
“I know this isn’t the most comfortable thing Cole but Carol has at least seen you naked. Let her help you with your bottoms so we can get you back into bed.”
“Please.” I’m shocked but contain it as she kneels towards the floor.
“I’m sorry.” He apologizes as the first of two pieces are brought up his legs.
“Don’t be.” She assures him when she finishes the second.
“I’m going to leave the door open. Come out when you’re ready. Alpha Cassius, we need to talk about getting him released.”
“Yes ma’am.”
I agree as he slowly picks himself up off my shoulder. I release my hold on him at the same rate he leaves remaining behind him as he slowly walks to the bed. He sits down slowly, holding his breath as he does.
