Sunday May 12th Pt. 4
“Please, talk to Cassius. We truly want to help you.”
He states calmly as he hands me the phone.
“Hello?”
I loathe the nervousness I hear in my voice.
“I guess he’s right to be concerned. You sound very nervous.”
His voice is respectful, patient and kind making it easier for me to talk.
“I’m sorry.” Oddly is the only thing I can think of to say.
“My name is Cassius but most just call me Cass. I am the leader of the Shadowlands pack. What’s your name?”
“I was told my name is Colton Allen Zander.”
“Told?” I knew that would come up.
“When I woke from the coma, I told Dr. Moore that I didn’t know who I was or why I was afraid. He said I had dissociative amnesia and that it was best if my memory wasn’t triggered until I got to my mate’s pack.” I explain cautiously.
“I see. Can you tell me about right now? Your injuries perhaps.”
I take several deep breaths before attempting to speak.
“I had a brace on my left forearm and wrist when I ran. I chucked when I found a garbage can but that was a mistake.”
“It’s hurting you?”
“Yes sir. I keep forgetting that it’s hurt. I tried to use it a few minutes ago to push myself off the seat I fell against but it hurt too badly to complete.”
“Anywhere else?”
A soft whine escapes me as disclosing any injuries simply feels wrong.
“I understand that you’re scared and vulnerable. The reason I’ve taken such interest in you and Deven has taken the time he has with you is because he’s a natural healer. He’s the lead doctor in my wing and a werewolf randomly tagging along behind him has happened many times before. It’s taken some time for him to figure out how the different statuses feel; feral, rogue or stray, but once he’s comfortable with you all he wants is to help you. He knows that you’re in a lot of pain. He could also sense your lack of eating. Before this evening, when was your last meal?”
“I’m not certain exactly what you’re looking for in my answer. I had steady meals at the hospital. I packed some protein drinks that were in my room before I left in a backpack that was beside my bed. I don’t know if it was mine. It had several inhalers in it, clothes and sneakers. The sneakers fit perfectly and I was told I had asthma so it made sense to assume it was mine. There’s been a few times that I’ve napped under the awning of a store and woke with cash being thrown in my lap. I’ve stopped at some fast food places when I had the money but there were several that I passed by because they didn’t feel safe.”
“You weren’t aware that you could get food and water from the grocery store?” He sounds shocked.
“If I’m a werewolf and lived in a pack, I don’t think I got out much. Nothing before running into Deven is familiar. I can’t even describe why he feels familiar but there is something that keeps me here with him.”
“How long ago did you run?”
“I don’t know. The last date Dr. Moore told me was the seventh.”
“Have you been able to find fresh water?”
“Yes. I’ve been able to get that easier than food.”
“Okay, it feels like you’ve loosened up. I need you to tell me everything that’s injured.”
I sigh as I struggle with his request. I really feel like I need help but this feeling of vulnerability just feels wrong.
“I left before they told me how bad off I was when I came in. Pain right now is in my lower back, both legs, my abdomen, both sides of my chest and my left arm. I also have a headache that doesn’t go away. I constantly feel like I’m about to be hit which I can’t explain. Just like I can’t explain the reason I’m afraid of everyone. I’m afraid of going with Deven. I’m afraid of meeting you. Everything is screaming for me to run but I’m tired. I need help.”
I’m struggling to maintain my emotions as I finish telling him way more than I intended to.
“Thank you Colton. I appreciate your openness as it gives me guidance on how to help you. Are you willing to get in the vehicle with Deven and travel to Shadowlands? It takes an hour and a half to two hours to get here from there.”
He waits patiently for my answer.
“I can’t keep going like this.”
I finally admit defeat. How am I ever going to make it to my mate like this?
“Okay, is Deven nearby?”
I look up from the phone for the first time it was handed to me, staring right into the chocolate brown eyes of Deven.
“He’s standing next to me.”
I barely manage to share.
“Good. This is what I want. Colton, I need you to let Dev help you into the jeep. Dev, use caution with his left arm. If you have a brace, he may find it more comfortable to travel with one on. I’d also like him to get some medication for the pain. Sleeping is difficult to achieve when you're on the sidewalk.”
“I can’t do needles.”
I step back, almost yelping when Deven looks at me. He lets it go as Cassius continues to explain his immediate plans for me. It’s only a few minutes longer before the two hang up the phone and Deven is encouraging me to step towards him.
“I would prefer to get you in the jeep before I retrieve a brace for your arm and the medication. Your fear is high enough that I fear you may try to run.”
I shake my head slowly as I try to speak again.
“I won’t run. I need help.”
It’s a simple statement but one that earns a gentle pat on my shoulder.
“Let me help you get in. If your back hurts enough to go down your legs, easing you into the car should be first.”
I finally agree as standing after that slight fall has really aggravated what was already there.
“Grab the handle near the windshield.”
He points as he places two hands on my left arm. He steadies me easily as I pull myself into the vehicle. Honestly, sitting down has never felt so good.
He leaves the door open as I lay back against the seat, closing my eyes as I listen to what’s around me. He rummages around in the back, opening and closing several containers before closing the trunk.
