September 3rd Pt. 6

“Yes, I think so.”
“The day they found you had left I received a call from Alpha Julius Redding….”
“Sounds familiar.” I’m surprised when he interrupts.
“He does?” Demetri questions. Cole nods despite not being seen.
“Can you tell me how he’s familiar?” Demetri asks slowly.
“I can’t but Buddy can.”
He sighs hard as we remain silent. I watch as he closes his eyes and hangs his head. It takes a minute before he speaks.
“Before the final battle I tried to run away. I got trapped in a shack with Kristoph for several days before I could get away. I crossed a footbridge in a blind panic where I ran into an alpha on the other side. He introduced himself as Alpha Julius Redding. We could smell Kristoph coming so we ran. We figured Alpha Redding would find us no matter where we hid so before I passed out from the asthma attack I made it into a cave. Only it wasn’t Redding that found us.”
“Thank you Buddy.”
“Alpha?”
“Yes Cole.” Demetri responds before I can.
“Why won’t he tell me what happened?”
“What do you mean?” Demetri is patient as Cole starts breaking down.
“There’s more to the story but he won’t finish. He said he understands now what amnesia means and he can’t bear to hurt me like that. That I would be better not remembering what my life was. How can my past be so terrible that I don’t deserve to know about it?”
He squeaks the last few words out before placing his face in his hands , sobbing softly at the reality.
“Alpha Martin.”
Demetri speaks as I gently persuade Cole to accept my embrace.
“Yes sir, I’m here.”
“While I’m extremely grateful that you were available to rescue him from the trauma he didn’t deserve, this is my worst fear realized. His wolf has awakened and does not share his amnesia which will result in a catastrophic mental health breakdown if the reintroduction to his memories are not done delicately.”
“I agree. I believe the best thing for Cole is to get him out of this room. I have a fully furnished three bedroom apartment on the second floor over top of the garage. It doesn’t have much of a kitchen as anyone in the pack house uses the one on the ground floor but the rooms are spacious and each has their own full bath. I believe this is the best setup for the night. Luna Arianna is very pregnant and should rest before traveling again.”
“Thank you.” I nod as Cole finally settles.
“Cole, I would like to ask one more question before I tell you what’s going to happen next as this is your decision and your decision determines what happens.”
“Okay.” He’s calm with only a slight waver to his voice.
“Where do you want to go? You can return to the Shadowlands pack with alphas Cassius and Deven or they can bring you here to Crimson Dawn.”
His breath catches in his chest as if it’s been knocked out of him. He shakes his head vigorously repeating in a whisper ‘I don’t choose.’
“There is no wrong answer Cole. Demetri and I discussed this at length and we agreed that these two options were in your best interest. If you come with me back to New York then I will start you into therapy and by the end of the year we will be working on returning you to Crimson Dawn. If you go to Crimson Dawn now then Demetri will do the same. The difference is your comfort.”
“I don’t remember him. Buddy does. He wants to return to Crimson Dawn but I don’t remember. I don’t understand why I’m afraid of everyone and everything but I don’t think I can handle returning yet.”
He’s nearing tears again as he shakes his head, placing his hands on his ears.
“Buddy please. I hear you. I understand you want to go to the place you know as home but I don’t know him. I don’t remember any of what you’re telling me and I am scared. I want to return to what’s familiar. Please Buddy. I need you to understand it has nothing to do with your insistence on returning to Red Fang. I don’t remember Red Fang. I don’t remember Crimson Dawn. You hold the key to my memories and you don’t want to share them. Please don’t leave me.” He whispers as he falls apart again.
“What’s going on?” I ask while trying to soothe him.
“He thinks I would be better off without him. I’m too good of a person to bear the pain of the memories he holds.”
“Buddy, it’s important that you stay with Cole. Even with Dissociative Identity Disorder the two of you are still connected and losing you will kill him.”
I make my statement firmly enough that Cole pushes back and looks me in the eyes.
“Alphas cannot live without their wolves.” I explain softly.
“Alpha Demetri I do feel our original plan of him returning to Shadowlands is the best thing at this time. I know we’ve taken up a lot of your time and Cole is completely exhausted. I’m certain he’d enjoy a bath after taking some food up to his room. When can I expect you to come visit with his mate? Jessa I believe?”
“Yes sir. Six weeks. I would like you to get him back on Effexor for ptsd once you return and Jessa and I will drive up in six weeks. I’ll fly home after a few days there but Jessa will remain until the two of them are ready to return.”
“Thank you, alpha.” I’m surprised when he speaks first.
“For what?”
“Buddy appreciates you allowing Jessa to come to us. He missed her. So do I. She visits in my dreams. Recently she's been the only calm in a storm I don’t understand.”
“I will get things set up next week so you can start talking with her regularly on the phone. With everything that has happened it’s important to connect with your mate above anyone else. Patience will be key for both of you.”
“Yes sir.”
“I will be in touch regularly, Cassius. I look forward to our new friendship.”
“Yes sir. I look forward to meeting the infamous Alpha Demetri Black.”
“All the way in New York?”
“All the way in New York.” I parrot as he finally hangs up the phone.
“Are you ready to get out of here?” I ask Cole with my hand outstretched.
“I don’t want to be alone.” He whispers, ashamed of the emotional roller coaster he’s on.
“I promise, you won’t be.” He takes my hand in his and slowly follows the train of people crowding out the door.
