Saturday, October 19th Pt. 6

“No!” I yelp as I attempt to fight. Demetri’s hold tightens around me until I settle.
“It’s okay. I’ve read your chart and the first few times I do this is going to be rough controlling your reaction. Sharing your previous experience with it helps the others understand why this is difficult.”
I whine sharply as I feel the sharp tip against the inside of my arm again.
“Very well done. I need you to describe what you feel.”
“No.” I nearly yell again as I try to pull away. “It’s sharp. Just like a needle. Please stop putting it in me.”
I finally break, completely defeated as the realization that I can’t get away and I can’t stop it overcomes me. Between the pain I’m in and the fear of this testing I can’t hold back any longer. I bury my face against Demetri’s arm. My body shakes as I finally allow myself to cry. I want to grab Demetri’s hand but something about the situation has me frozen. He massages my head gently, silently waiting for me to calm.
“Demetri, can run your hand down the inside of his arm?” She asks calmly.
I keep still as he moves, cupping my arm in his hand, he slides lightly from my elbow to my wrist before returning to my elbow. He holds my arm gently in his hand as Evelyn moves from in front of me, making me nervous. I attempt to pull myself closer to Demetri not wanting anything to do with the continuation of this test but fail to move myself even an inch.
“Easy there, Cole.” Demetri speaks softly.
I collapse back into him.
“Please make her stop. The holes are very painful when my feeling comes back. They always get infected.”
I plead to the one I feel is in control, the only one I believe will stop this.
“I promise you. She’s not breaking the skin.” I whine briefly in defeat as the tears I loathe start falling again. “I promise you, I would never allow what she described as often happening to happen. You have no cuts or open wounds on your arm. Concentrate on my touch.”
He encourages gently as he runs his hand slowly up and down my arm. Sure enough all I feel is his touch but I also feel something else. I can’t help but whine with the strange sensation on my leg.
“Stay where you are Evelyn.” He calls out gently. “What did you feel?”
“I don’t know.” I state with a whine behind it.
“I need you to relax. I know your asthma is aggravated but I need you to breathe deep and calm.”
I close my eyes as I attempt to do as he’s instructed. Before I can fully relax I feel it again. I whine in frustration as I try to pull away but I can tell that it’s useless, nothing is moving.
“Your reaction doesn’t seem painful. Is it hurting you?”
“No.” I manage to whisper. “It feels weird. I don’t like it. It’s creepy.” I manage to admit softly.
“Okay, Evelyn, I want you to stay in that spot but I need you to give him a pattern to duplicate so I can try and determine how much he’s feeling.”
“Yes sir.” She replies. I whine as I feel her tapping.
“Try not to fight Cole.”
Demetri is patient as he pets my head. I whine again but I can make out what feels like three taps.
“Can you do that again?” I wheeze.
“Keep the pattern the same. He’s still very fearful but he has finally realized that this is different. He’s trying to figure this out as much as us.” Deven remarks.
“Yes sir. Cole, I’m going to change what I’m using so I can give you more pressure in this area without cutting your skin.”
“What you’re using is sharp enough to do that?” I ask nervously.
“It’s the same thing that I used on your arm. I’m using a lancet. We usually put them in a special device that allows us to prick a person’s finger quickly to test blood sugar so with enough force it will cut your skin.”
“Thank you.”
“Sadie.” She calls a name I didn’t know was even here. “You’ve followed my directions well. I appreciate you hanging back as Cole doesn’t react well with a crowd.”
“Yes ma’am, you’re welcome.”
“I need you to take the lancet and hand me a marker.” I can hear the movement of her feet briefly over my worsening wheeze.
“Do we have the portable nebulizer machine?”
“Yes ma’am.”
“His asthma attack is getting worse. I need you to bring it in here, set him up with the mask. I need to verify his level of feeling in a few more places before doing the IV and blood draw.”
I hear her walk away without any further conversation.
“I’m not going to tell you when I’m doing it or where I’m located but what I will tell you is that in my hand is a sharpie marker. Are you familiar with the shape of them?”
She pauses as I nod.
“It’s rounded on the bottom and that’s what I’m going to use. It’s still annoying to be poked with it but I can put more pressure on it than something sharp. I’m going to choose a number and tap that amount. I will increase the pressure each time until you can tell me the number.”
To my surprise I find myself agreeing with what she wants to do. I breathe in deep with surprise when I feel tapping just a moment later. I choke and wheeze on the breath causing me to fight but with only half my body working properly I can’t do much but struggle.
“Easy there, Cole. I have something that will help loosen your breathing up.”
I open my eyes quickly as fear and panic have consumed me. A very young girl that I’ve never met kneels in front of me. The side that I’m facing has a six inch ledge, just wide enough to place small items but thin enough that I’m easy to get to.
“I haven’t met you though.” She looks directly at Demetri.
“I’m Alpha Demetri Black. I’m usually informal but being here barely even a day, I’m not certain if your pack is informal as well or not.”
“Majority of the pack refers to me as Alpha Cassius but the lower ranks and alphas that are not the lead alpha choose what they wish to be called.” I can feel him nod beside me.
“It sounds like you prefer Demetri.”
She continues the conversation as she sets up the nebulizer. I whine as the tapping feeling gets stronger.
“Three.” I finally manage to wheeze. I feel it again but it’s much fainter.
“I can tell that you’ve moved.” I have to stop and catch my breath before continuing. “But I barely feel it.”
“Good.” She remarks as she continues.
After several seconds I whine in frustration. As terrifying as this was to begin with feeling her taps, even faintly, was a slight comfort to me.
“What’s wrong?” Demetri asks calmly.
“I can’t feel it anymore.” I try to hide the disappointment in my voice.
“It’s okay. She’s trying to find where it starts. Be still. We need to get this mask on you.”
When I look at his hand I can see the mask he’s speaking of. He’s bringing it slowly towards my face. It’s as if he can read my mind. I want to fight. I don’t know why but the instinct is there. I close my eyes and lay my head against his shoulder again. I’m completely spent, I have no fight left. All I can do is allow him to put the mask on me.
