Chapter 22 The Bet
Seeing Fergus's embarrassment, Sarah taunted, "Can't answer? If not, just leave and stop making a fool of yourself!"
The other employees chuckled. These were basic questions, and he couldn't even answer. 'How could Ms. Gray trust such a person?' they thought.
After a moment, Fergus shot back, "Who's the boss here?"
Sarah was stunned but then sneered. "You are, obviously!"
"Since I'm the boss, what gives you the right to test me?" Fergus said calmly. "For your disrespect, your salary's halved for three months. Do it again, and you're fired."
"And the rest of you, apologize and leave now. If not, the Henderson Group will move out of Sky Tower, and I'll have a word with Mr. Quinn!"
Sarah and the employees were all dumbfounded.
Sarah thought, 'Is he serious? He can't argue, so he's playing dirty! But he's the boss now. As long as Ms. Gray keeps him, his words stand!'
Fergus went back to his office, a bit flushed. If he hadn't toughened up in prison, he wouldn't have handled their stares.
He quickly called Daniel, saying angrily, "Get Radiant Overlord Ryan on the phone in thirty seconds, or I'm going back to prison."
Daniel panicked and got Ryan on the line immediately; he couldn't let Fergus go back.
Ryan answered, and Fergus asked the question he'd been stumped on. Ryan explained everything in detail.
"Got it. You don't have to clean my ward this month!" Fergus snapped and then hung up.
Outside, Sarah was fuming, finally understanding why Fergus ended up in prison. He was a rogue who didn't play by the rules.
She realized the only way to get rid of him was to make Violet lose faith in him.
After a moment, she remembered there was a land auction today.
She quickly knocked on the door. "Mr. Yost, there's a land auction at city hall..."
Meanwhile, at city hall, a sign read "Plot 140 Land Auction."
The place was packed with major real estate developers and wealthy individuals from Tarynville.
Among them were the richest man, Hayden, and Logan from the Logan Group, sitting together.
Logan smiled, "Hayden, I heard Sophia didn't see Fergus today. Got a plan?"
Hayden responded with a smile. "Xavier, Fergus may control Ms. Gray's resources now, but he's incompetent. She'll kick him out soon. Better to secure the next partnership slot."
After an all-night board meeting, they decided if Fergus abused his power, they'd report to Violet. She wouldn't let him run wild.
So, Fergus wasn't a threat.
Logan nodded. "Exactly. We don't know how he won Ms. Gray's favor, but it won't last. Overnight millionaires are usually arrogant."
"Even if we face retaliation now, it's just the darkness before dawn. We can handle it."
"By the way, I heard he doesn't even know the difference between gross profit and net profit."
Hayden laughed harder. He'd heard that too. Even a three-year-old knew that, and Fergus didn't.
He added, "Xavier, let's bet on how long he keeps his partnership. I say within a month!"
Logan was intrigued. "I bet within half a month!"
Just then, a voice came from behind them. "Ever heard the saying, 'Don't judge others by small talk'?"
Hayden and Logan turned, stunned to see Fergus.
They thought, 'The Gray Group just got its license today, and he's already at the auction?'
Fergus sat behind them and said, "You're Logan, right? You should know better than to gossip. If not, ask Tyler!"
Logan was furious. Tyler's face still bore the marks from their last encounter.
He sneered, "Mr. Yost, attending an auction on your first day? Trying to impress Ms. Gray?"
Fergus leaned back. "Of course, I should focus on my career!"
The room fell silent, and everyone was eyeing him mockingly. 'A lucky jerk talking about a career?'
Hayden frowned, thinking Fergus was just here to stir trouble.
Sarah turned away, embarrassed.
Logan sneered. "Mr. Yost, before you talk about your career, learn what gross profit and net profit are, and understand the Gray Group's positioning and development."
"Only then can you talk about a career."
"Otherwise, you'll just be a laughingstock!"
The crowd laughed. News about Fergus had spread quickly. The Gray Group was always hot news.
"Fergus had to play dirty when questioned by his subordinates. How embarrassing!"
"How do you know I don't understand?" Fergus stayed calm. "If I know what gross profit and net profit are, and understand the Gray Group's positioning and development, will you kneel and call me daddy?"
Everyone looked at him like he was an idiot.
Hayden shook his head, thinking, 'Does he think we don't know what happened at the company? Still pretending!'
"Mr. Yost!" Sarah whispered. Despite her low opinion of him, she had to remind him because he represented the company.
"Alright!"
Logan quickly agreed, eager to humiliate Fergus. "If you answer, I'll call you 'dad'. If not, you call me 'dad'. Deal?"
Sarah thought, 'If Fergus kneels and calls him daddy, Violet will definitely kick him out!'
"Deal!"
Fergus didn't hesitate and looked around. "You're all witnesses. Make sure the bet is honored!"
"Mr. Yost... serves you right!" Sarah wanted to stop him but saw this as a chance to push him down.
"Of course!"
"I'll be a witness!"
Everyone responded eagerly, wanting to see Fergus kneel and call Logan daddy.
"If anyone backs out, they'll be despised in Tarynville and never find peace!" Hayden said solemnly.
Fergus smiled. "With you all as witnesses, I'm relieved."
Before he could finish, Logan interrupted with a smirk, "Mr. Yost, no need for more words. Let's get started. I'm all ears!"
Fergus looked at him and said, "Gross profit is the revenue from main business minus the cost of main business. This is the textbook definition. In practice, there's no clear division or unified definition. Net profit is..."
"Now let me talk about the Gray Group's positioning, development direction, and future plans..."
