Chapter 9 Inquiring About Identity
"Hiss..."
Almost at the same time, the horse neighed, clearly spooked. It reared up, hooves kicking in the air.
Everyone was startled. What was wrong with the horse?
Tyler almost got thrown off, confused. He'd been raising this horse for three years and had it well-trained. Clutching the reins, he whipped the horse and shouted, "Calm down. Stop! I need to race. Stop!"
However, the more he whipped, the wilder the horse got.
Fergus smirked. He'd ridden tigers and black bears in the mountains while training with his master. Riding a horse was a piece of cake. He snapped his fingers again.
The horse went even crazier, leaping twice more.
Bang!
Tyler got thrown off, landing hard on the ground, wincing in pain.
"Mr. Shaw!"
"Tyler!"
Everyone rushed over, but before they could reach him, something even crazier happened. The horse walked over to Tyler, bent its knees, and sat on him!
Usually, people rode horses. Now, the horse was riding a person!
Sophia turned, shocked, to look at Fergus, but he was gone.
"Get off, get off!" Tyler was furious and humiliated. He had never seen this coming. He tried to push the horse away, but it weighed 910 pounds. He couldn't budge it.
He yelled, "Come back! The race isn't over. Come back!"
"You lost!" Sophia said, gritting her teeth, feeling a mix of emotions. "He can control your horse. There's no need to continue. You lost the moment you challenged him."
"I..." Tyler was about to explode with anger.
Fergus walked out of Tarynville Racetrack and saw someone approaching.
"Why is this girl always around?"
It was Jessica. He wondered if he was cursed. He decided to pretend not to see her and head the other way.
"Stop!" Jessica, blushing, called out. After she left yesterday, Mr. White had proposed a deal: if she could introduce Fergus to him, Mr. White would cooperate with the Henderson Group!
Thinking about his engagement with Sophia, she had followed Sophia here and found him.
Fergus stopped, annoyed. "I'm inside the gate, and you're outside. Are you saying I followed you to the racetrack?"
He cut her off before she could argue.
Jessica said reluctantly, "This time, I came to you. I need your help with something."
"No time!" Fergus shot back.
"You..." Jessica felt uncomfortable. She pulled out a bank card and angrily said, "Don't worry, I won't ask for your help for free. Even though you've charmed Sophia, she'll wake up one day and kick you out. You need to plan ahead!"
"Here's thirty grand. Take it and come with me!"
Fergus laughed in frustration. People here love to throw money around like they're rich.
He tossed the card Tyler had given him earlier. "Here's three hundred grand. Take it and stay away from me. Don't bother me again."
Jessica was stunned. "Three hundred grand?" she repeated.
She was fuming. He had only tricked a billionaire's daughter; what was so impressive about that?
But thinking about the company she had just taken over and how crucial Mr. White's order was, she had to swallow her pride.
She forced a smile. "Fergus, we once had an engagement. Please, I'm begging you."
Fergus frowned, instinctively checking her complexion. She looked a bit pale, but it was just a hormonal imbalance, not cancer.
Seeing his hesitation, Jessica pressed on. "Fergus, please, meet Mr. White."
She then put on a pitiful expression.
So she wanted him to meet someone...
Fergus had always been soft-hearted. "Just this once, and don't bother me again."
"Okay. My car is over here!"
Jessica was overjoyed and quickly walked to the side, opening the Maserati door like a chauffeur.
They got into the car and left.
Sophia chased out of the racetrack, suddenly remembering she hadn't figured out his identity yet. But she only saw a blurry figure leaving.
As she was thinking, her phone rang.
She answered. "Dad."
"How is it going? Did you find out?" Hayden's urgent voice came from the other end.
Sophia thought for a moment and speculated, "He probably doesn't have any status. He competed for three hundred grand..."
She then recounted what had happened.
In Westside Manor, Hayden and Linda were mocking.
"I thought he had a deep background. He changed his mind for three hundred grand. Turns out he just thought I offered too little yesterday, haha."
Linda sneered. "If nothing unexpected happens, he probably met Mr. Quinn in prison or saved him. It's not because of his own abilities!"
"I was hoping to rely on him to secure tonight's cooperation with the Gray family. There's no hope now; we'll have to rely on ourselves."
Linda thought, 'Saving someone is a favor, and favors can be repaid. It's not worth paying attention to. But if he had abilities himself, it would be different. He could make Mr. Quinn bow down, and maybe he knew Ms. Gray!'
Hayden nodded. "I thought this guy had some background, but he's just a jerk. Don't let me see him again!"
"Prepare for tonight's banquet!"
