Chapter 102- The Past Is Calling
I felt the hair on the back of my neck stand at hearing her call my name. Has she been standing there all this time? Did she hear my conversation with Scar?
“ Uhm, Miss Miller, you're here," I said not knowing what else to say, how do I know she didn't hear all I said with Scar? When I thanked him for helping me find Mr Miller and my plea to give me time to do my own part of the bargain.
“ I'm done, I didn't see you in your car so I came to look for you," she said and I nodded as I slipped my phone into my pocket,
“ Are you ready?" I asked her,
“ Yeah, but are you okay? You sounded like you were in trouble," she said and I felt my heart skip a beat. I'm sure she heard something but she didn't hear the whole call.
“ I'm doing okay, let's go," I said as she started walking and I walked behind her.
I opened the car door for her and she got in and then I took deep breaths before I turned around to the driver's side and got in as I started the car and drove out of the Miller's mansion.
I have to be very careful when I talk to Scar, that was a close one.
We got to the office as we both walked into the company.
“ Don't you think we should make a public announcement that he has been found," she said as we both walked to the elevator,
“ I don't think you should now because he's still recovering, he should be the one to appear to the media himself when he gets better, that way people won't think you're lying," I said,
“ You have a point," she said as I pressed the elevator and the door opened and we both walked in as we walked into the elevator.
“ You know it's still shocking to me, after all the search and sleepless nights we finally found him, I'm so happy," my boss suddenly said and I turned to her to see her smiling.
It was worth asking for Scar's help if it can bring out a smile like this.
“ Yeah, at least we have that off our chest, now we have to focus on the emerald eye," I said as she sigh,
“ We still have that," she said,
“ Yeah and just like we've found Mr Miller we'll soon find that too," I said,
“ I hope so,"
The elevator door opened and we both stepped out of the elevator.
“ I'll be in my office," She said as she made her way to her office, while I made my way to mine.
As soon as I got settled in I brought out my phone to make a call.
“ What do you have?" I asked the person that I gave the job to tail Mr Garry Miller around.
“ I've been following him and it's been the usual, coming to work, hanging out with friends and going home," he said. I wouldn't be fooled, that man always has something planned out, it wouldn't surprise me if he knows someone was following him.
“ You have to be careful and make sure he doesn't know you're following him," I warned,
“ Yes sir, he wouldn't know I'm following him, I'm very discreet," he said,
“ Okay, keep me updated if you find any suspicious or if you see him with anyone,” I said,
" Yes sir, alright, have a nice day,” I said before I ended the call.
I stood up from my chair as I walked to my boss's office.
I knocked on her door and I heard her voice telling me to come in from inside. At least she sounded happy.
I opened the door and walked in as I dropped the report she asked for on her table.
“ That's the report you asked for and here's the document that needs your signature,” I said,
I told her her schedule for the day and was about to walk out of her office but she stopped me.
" Hardin,” she called as I turned to her.
" I just wanted to say thank you for everything and always standing by my side,” she said with a smile,
" My pleasure, you're a strong woman and a force to reckon with, I want you to know that,” I said,
" Thank you, Hardin,” she said and I nodded before walking out of her office.
The day went by in a blur and soon enough it was time to go home. All day my mind wouldn't stop ringing to me about how I had to arrange a meeting with my boss with one of the city's most dangerous crime lords.
What did he want to talk about?
My boss has already left to go check up on her grandfather.
I stood up from my chair as I started arranging my things into my bag.
When I was done I walked out of my office as I walked into the elevator.
I pressed the elevator button for the ground floor as I waited for the elevator to reach.
“ Hey Vera, are you home yet?" I asked my best friend,
" No, I sent you a message, didn't you see it?” she asked,
“ A message? I didn't see it, maybe I didn't check," I said,
" I'm hanging out with the guys, I'll be sleeping over,” she said,
" Alright then,” I said,
" Bye I love you, are you sure you're not gonna come? It's fun here, Mark is singing with his awful voice,” she whispered the last part and I couldn't help but laugh.
“ I would have loved to but I'm really tired, I'm just leaving work,” I said,
" Oh, okay, what about Miss Miller?” she asked as the elevator door opened and I walked out.
" She went to the hospital,” I said,
" Alright then, take it easy Hardin, don't go to bed without eating something,” she warned,
" I won't, go back to what you were doing,” I said,
“ Okay don't miss me too much, bye,"
“ Bye I love you," I said before I ended the call,
I opened my car and I got in and threw my bag on the passenger's seat but just as I was about to start the car my phone started ringing again.
Did she forget to tell me something?
I picked the call without looking at the screen as I placed it to my ear.
" What did you forget?” I asked but didn't get any response,
" Vee,” I called,
" Hardin,” I suddenly heard a voice I could recognize any day any time as the phone fell from my hand in shock.
