Chapter 88- Bad News

“ If you're calling me kid, it means you're in deep trouble or in deep shit so which one is it?" He asked and I couldn't help but laugh.

" It's more like I'm in deeper shit right now,” I said and he just hummed.

" So what have you done and what do you want me to do for you?” He asked.

" Truth is I haven't done anything but there are so many things happening around me that need uncovering and I need your help with…”

" Helping you sort your shit?” He asked, stopping whatever I wanted to say.

“ Look, recently my boss got kidnapped," I said.

“ Wait, you still work for that old ass man?" I closed my eyes trying to control my mouth. I would have given him a word or two but only because I need his help, I'm going to ignore the fact that he just insulted one of the best people I know.

“ He was kidnapped and that isn't all, his granddaughter was being attacked and it almost cost her her life, there are so many missing pieces and…”

" You want me to fill in the puzzle, man don't you already know I'm not good with the puzzle game?” He asked and I pulled the phone away from my ear and took deep breaths.

Control Hardin, control.

I was saying something serious and he was joking about it.

“ There are so many things that need to be uncovered, and then today, we were supposed to meet with one of our clients but she didn't make it to us because she had an accident and died and it was discovered that the car brakes failed," I said.

“ May her gentle or not so gentle soul rest with the Lord. So what do you want me to do for you?" He asked.

“ I need your help with information, I need to know who is behind all this, you're a Don and you have that power to get whatever information you want just with a snap of your finger, so help me with this," I said.

He stayed quiet for some time that I had to pull the phone from my ear to make sure the call was still on and it was.

" Why aren't you saying anything?” I asked.

" What would I get for doing this for you?” He asked. This was always the hardest part, a man like him had almost all he wanted, what could I possibly give him? So when I ask him questions like this my head starts to hurt almost immediately.

“ I don't know what I want from you yet but as soon as I think of something I'll let you know so we can strike a deal,” he said.

“ Alright then," I said before the call ended.

I hope this doesn't backfire on me, calling one of the most dangerous men of the city for help is like putting myself in trouble.

I chose not to tell him about the emerald eye because a man like Scar would find that jewelry and keep it for himself, I wouldn't want to risk that. We'd have to take care of getting the emerald eye by ourselves.

With that being done, I tried to get back to work.

I was working when my phone started ringing and I picked it to see that it was a call from my best friend.

“ Hi Vera, how are you? Missing me already?" I asked with a smile.

“ Are you okay Hardin?" she asked, her voice filled with worry.

“ I am, but are you? Why the hell do you sound so worried?" I asked her and I knew that right now she'd be shaking her head.

“ It's nothing Hardin, I just wanted to know how you're doing," she said but I didn't believe her. Something was wrong and she didn't want to tell me what.

“ You're hiding something from me Vera, you should know I'm the last person you can lie to, what happened to not lying to each other," I asked.

“ I'm not lying to you Hardin like why the hell is the world like this? Can't I call my best friend to check up on him?” She asked as she tried to cover her worry with a laugh.

For now I'd pretend to buy her lie but later tonight I'd be drilling the truth out of her.

“ Alright, if you say so," I said.

" Yeah, do take care,” She said before she ended the call. Why the hell did she call me knowing I'm going to worry about her?

I got back to work but each time my mind kept going back to the call I had with my best friend. Why wasn't she telling me what the problem was?

Aside from work I had a lot of things happening in my private life that I needed to take care of so I was filled to the brim. We were still yet to find out who sent those notes, who tried to shoot me. It was complicated.

I was busy trying to solve work’s mystery when I had my own life's mystery to solve.

The office phone rang and I knew it was my boss' call so I picked up the call.

“ In my office Hardin, now," she said and I immediately got up at the sound of her voice, she sounded so panicked.

" I'm coming,” I said before I ended the call and ran out of my office.

I knocked on her door and her barely audible voice told me to come in.

I pushed the door open and what I saw made my heart skip.

“ Miss Miller," I called as I quickly rushed to where she was sitting on the floor.

“ Miss Miller what is it?" I asked as she turned to me with tears stained eyes.

“ What's wrong?" I asked with concern.

" My grandpa, I think they've found him,”
