Chapter 90- Claudia Is Back

HARDIN'S POV

“Miss Miller! Miss Miller," I called until she finally stopped as she rested her head on the wall with her head down.

“ I can't do this Hardin, I thought I could, I really can't do this," she said with a shake of her head as she sniffed like she was about to start crying.

“ I know this is hard for you but right now you have to do this, I know you're scared of the truth you might find behind that door but believe me when I say you're one of the strongest women I know, whatever truth you find, you'll be able to handle it just fine, believe me," I said and she took deep breaths before turning to me.

" Thank you so much Hardin, I don't know what I would have done without you,” she said as she took the handkerchief I handed her.

" You're strong and you can do this,” I said and she nodded before we started walking to the room where the officer was waiting for us.

" I'm sorry officer, it was just a moment of weakness, I'm ready now,” she said apologetically to the officer.

“ It's okay Miss Miller, I understand, this is hard for you but you have to try," he said and she nodded.

The officer opened the door once again and I was hoping she wouldn't run away.

I saw the way her hands clenched before she took the bold step and walked into the room.

The body was covered entirely with a white cloth.

The officer looked at my boss again as if asking her for her confirmation and she nodded before he opened the cloth.

I had to shut my eyes for a minute because of the gruesome sight before me.

“ Miss Miller," I heard the officer's voice, that was when I turned to my boss and realized that she had her eyes closed.

“ Miss Miller," I walked behind her and whispered and she finally opened her eyes.

She looked at the body that was in front of us, a body that looked like life was beaten out of it.

“ It's not him, that's not him," she said as she quickly turned away from the body.

“ Thank you officer, we'll be outside," I said as I placed my hand on her shoulder and walked her out of the room.

From the moment I saw the body I knew it was not him but I still needed her to confirm that it wasn't Mr Miller's body. She was his family, not me. I couldn't describe the relief that flowed through me at realizing that it wasn't Mr Miller.

I know that this doesn't mean good or bad but we still don't know where Mr Miller was. If he's alive or dead, we don't know.

“ It's okay, you won't have to go through that again," I said.

“ Hopefully Hardin, hopefully," She said,

“ Can I get you coffee? Or water?" I asked,

“ I would have love to have coffee but hospital coffee tastes like shit, let's get outta here, whatever the officer has to tell me he should call me, I'll either go to the police station or he picks wherever he wants,” she said as she sighed and we both walked out of the hospital.

I opened the car door for her and she got in muttering a ‘thank you’ before I closed the door and turned around to the driver's side.

“ You know for a moment I thought it was him, I thought it was my mind trying to reject the truth but that wasn't it, they both do have things in common and I have a feeling that whoever did that horrible thing to that man wanted us to believe that my grandpa was dead, that was what gave me the conviction that he's still alive," she said.

“ So many things are happening right now Miss Miller and I can't really wrap my head around it," I said as I started the car.

I suddenly felt her hand on my thigh and I quickly turned to her.

“ Thank you so much Hardin, I know I…I have treated you like shit but you've done things for me that make me wonder if you're human, thank you so much,” She said,

“ My pleasure, Miss Miller,” I said with a smile and she returned the smile before removing her hand.

“ Can you just drop my home I've had such a bad day today, I'll finish whatever work I have at home," she said,

“ Okay," I said.

I dropped her off at the Miller's mansion and I couldn't help but feel a pang of sadness fill me as I think back to when I used to drop Mr Miller or sometimes when I used to go in to say hi to him.

It just saddens my heart that the poor man was still nowhere to be found.

I drove out of the Miller's mansion as I headed home.

When I walked into my house it was quiet, an indication that Vera wasn't back, she can't be home and the house would be this quiet, she always has something up her sleeve.

Since she wasn't home I decided to make dinner for both of us.

I know something must have happened, she called me earlier and she didn't sound so good. Was she sick? She didn't mention.

I got to cooking and I was almost done when I heard the door open.

“ Gosh, I had such a terrible day, that stupid woman had to ruin my day, I swear if I see her near Hardin I'll kill her, I'll…oh you're home…and early,” She said as she saw me.

" Yeah, what were you blabbing about? Who got you upset?” I asked.

“ Uhm, it's nothing, how was your day? What did you make?" She asked, trying to change the topic.

“ Vera, we both know that the call you gave me earlier was because something was wrong, so are you going to tell me what it really was about?"

“ It's nothing Hardin, I'm hungry let's eat,” she said as she dropped her bag and was about to go carry plates but I stopped her.

“ Vera, I'm not doing this with you, tell me what happened," I said,

“ Hardin,..." She said with a sigh,

“ I don't want you to get hurt again," she said.

“ What are you talking about? Just say it," I said as I looked at her with anticipation.

" Claudia met with me today,”

I froze.
