Chapter 162- The Unexpected Visitor
HARDIN'S POV
“ I just had to come tonight I was scared," she said as her eyes went behind me,
“ What are you doing here?” Vera asked as she came to stand in front of me like a Mom who was protecting her son from the girl who broke his heart.
“ Hey, I'm sorry for barging on you guys like this,” she said looking scared as she hugged herself,
“ I told you I was going to talk to Vera, we haven't even properly talked about it," I said,
" Hardin, it's okay, I've got this,” Vera said as she placed her hand on my chest, calming me.
“ You can come in," she said as she opened the door fully as Claudia looked at her in confusion,
“ Are you sure?” she asked like she couldn't believe her ears,
" Of course come in,” Vera said in a sweet voice that even I had to look at her to make sure she was really the one speaking,
Claudia walked into the house and Vera closed the door. I had to look at her hand to make sure she wasn't hiding any knife to stan Claudia.
“ Make yourself at home, would you like to drink or eat anything, it's late but I can make something for you,” Vera said,
That was such a quick switch, she went from what are you doing here to you're welcome here. My best friend was acting strange.
“No I'm okay Vera thank you for your kindness," Claudia said,
“ Oh, okay then come I'll show you to your room," Vera said as she made a hand gesture for Claudia to follow her.
I've never been so confused and it was taking everything in my not to laugh although the situation isn't funny.
I watched as Vera led Claudia away to show her a room and I just walked back to the sitting room to sit down. She has some explaining to do.
After some time she returned to the living room and sat down and I turned to her waiting for an explanation.
“ Chill Hardin, haven't you heard of ‘Kill then with kindness?’ I'm not going to make her believe she did nothing wrong and treat her the best way ever, she'd be scared of me because she'll never know when next I'll switch, that way she'd be weary of me.” she said and I couldn't help but laugh,
“ What type of dialogy is that?” I asked and she just shrugged,
" Wait until tomorrow you'd understand, she's going to think I poisoned breakfast,” she said.
" And you don't plan to?" I asked and she just shrugged,
" It's late we should probably go to sleep,” I said as I stood up and was about to walk to my room but she stopped me,
“ Hardin are you ready okay with her stay here? You can tell me the switch is just with in seconds and she'll be out of here, I don't want anyone to hurt you," she said as I took her hand and dropped a kiss on it.
" I'm perfectly fine there's no need for you to worry yourself about anything, I promise,” I said and she nodded before we respectively walked to our rooms,"
As soon as you closed my room door I released a breath I didn't know I was holding as I grudgingly walked to my bed.
Am I sure that this would be okay? I can't see Claudia without my heart hurting wishing she had loved me back then we wouldn't be going through all this now.
I closed my eyes trying to get some sleep as I waited for sleep to welcome me into its warm embrace.
***
I jerked out of bed when I heard a scream and I shrugged my brows in confusion.
I heard the scream again when I jumped out of bed and out of my room as I headed to Claudia's because she was the one screaming.
I opened her door the see that she was twisting in bed with her eyes closed and her hands in the air like she was trying to push someone off her.
I quickly rushed to her as I held her hands to stop her struggling.
“ Claudia, Claudia!" I called and she jumped up in fear like she was going to fall off the bed.
“ You're doing okay, it's just a nightmare, you're fine now," she looked at me like I was some sort of angel and then without warning she wrapped her arms around me holding me tightly.
“ I was scared, Hardin, I thought he was going to kill me,” she said as she rested her head on my chest and my heartbeat increased.
This was what I wanted, to hold her like this for her to be dependent on me but she didn't want me, so does this mean she wants me now.
I ran my fingers through her hair trying to calm her down and then when I knew she was calm, I tried to pull away but she wouldn't let me.
“ You're fine now Claudia, I need to return to my room," I said but she shook her head,
“ No please Hardin stay with me, he's going to come back, he's going to come back to kill me," she said with fear in her voice.
" You should sleep, I'll be here till you fall asleep,” I said as she slowly rested her back on the bed and closed her eyes trying to go back to sleep. She held onto my hand tightly like she was making sure I didn't leave.
“ Who is he? The man you're scared of?” I asked,
She stayed silent for a while but I knew she heard my question, maybe she didn't want to talk about it.
“ My ex-husband, he just won't leave me alone," she said,
What?! She was married? I just couldn't stop the stupid feeling of pain that spread around my chest.
My innocent beautiful Claudia got married. I couldn't help but give a humorless laugh, I've always thought about what marrying her would feel like.
“ Good night," I said as I stood up unable to look at her even for a second.
“ Hardin! I never loved him and he knew that, it was you I love, it has always been you,"
