Chapter 69- Her Mother's Secret

“ Mom, what are you hiding?" I asked hoping she would come clean and tell me what she was hiding but she still decided to lie to me.

" It's nothing honey, nothing, what do you think I'll be hiding from you?” She asked as she looked up at me with a smile. This was just a clear indication that my Mom was hiding so many things from me.

Instead of arguing further I stood up from where I was sitting beside her as I walked to the bedside table just beside her then I pushed it aside.

“ What are you doing Ariana? Why are you…” she stopped when I picked the cigarette she was trying to hide and showed it to her.

" Mom, why?” I asked her with a shake of my head as I felt tears burn my eyes.

“ You're sick and this is something they told you not to ever get near your lips but you're doing this to yourself? Don't you care about me?" I asked as my eyes blurred with tears.

“ How can you say that Ariana? You're my daughter and I love you," she said but I shook my head.

“ How can I say that? Mom, you say you love me but you're doing something to damage my health, do you want to leave me too?” I asked as she tried to reach for me but I moved back and I saw hurt flash in her eyes.

“ You say you love me, you say you care about me but you're using your hands to endanger your life Mom, how can you do this to me? I don't know where grandpa is, dad is gone and now the only person in this world that I have wants to end her own life,"

“ Stop making such a big deal out of it Ariana, it's not like I'm going to die tomorrow," she said as she looked at me like she wanted me to see reason with what she just said but I couldn't.

" So your life isn't a big deal Mom, you really want to leave me is that it?” I asked as I felt the first set of tears roll down my eyes.

She could say I was being dramatic but I wasn't, she has high blood pressure and one of the things she was asked not to do is smoking. This was a big deal for me because she was all I have left, she's everything to me.

I looked at her unable to form words because I felt like if I opened my mouth one more time to speak I might say something I'll regret later.

I looked at the cigarette I was holding as I squeezed the pack in my hand. From the look of it she was already on her fourth cigarette. How many was she planning to smoke if I didn't come?

“ You know that smoking isn't going to bring Dad back nor would it make you feel better, this is going to ruin you Mom, why would you even think of doing this Mom?" I asked as I brought my hand to wipe my tears.

“ I didn't mean to upset you, this was why I didn't even want you to find out," What?! She has been smoking for how long?

" Mom, just how long have you been smoking after the doctor's instruction not to go anywhere near a cigarette?” I asked.

“ A week now," she said as she looked down. You know what wasn't funny right now? It's the fact that she feels bad I found out and not that she was endangering herself.

“ Mom," I called as I went back to sit on the bed beside her.

“ Listen to me Mom," I said as I touched her cheek…" You're all that I have, please don't do this to me, promise me you'll never smoke, please,” I said as I looked into her eyes and she nodded.

She didn't look like she planned on stopping but I had a plan, I wouldn't sit here and let my Mom toy with her health.

I pulled close to her as I hugged her.

“ I love you Mom, I want you to know that and if you love me you'll take care of yourself for me, I don't want to lose you too," I said.

“ You're not going to lose me," she said as she kissed my cheek.

“ I'm sorry, I won't take it again," she sounded like she was trying to convince herself rather than convince me.

“ Okay get some rest, I've got some things to take care of,” I said and she nodded before I stood up. She laid on the bed to get comfortable while I drew the bed cover up her chin.

" Good night Mom,” I said before I turned off her bedside lamp and walked out of the room.

As I closed the door my heart was heavy, I knew that I couldn't watch her at all times, nobody could and I knew if she decided to smoke again I wouldn't even know.

“ Agnes!" I called for my mom's maid and she came running.

“ Yes Miss Miller, you called me," she said.

“ Have you noticed anything strange with my mother lately? And don't think of lying to me," I said and she nodded.

“ I just noticed that lately she always asks me to leave the room because she needs space and I always do as she says," she explained.

“ Is that all?" I asked.

“ Yes, Miss Miller," the nurse said.

" Alright, call the chief security of this mansion and tell him to meet me with everyone in charge of security now,” I said and she nodded before she walked away to do what I asked her.

I walked to the sitting room as I sat down on the couch and crossed my legs waiting for them.

Some minutes later about ten men walked into my sitting room. I knew this wasn't all of them. They all couldn't leave their security post and come here, not like them staying at their post had any difference.

Things still happen under their noses and they have no clue about it.

“ Do you know why I called you all here or should I tell you?” I asked them as they looked between each other.

“ I said, are you going to talk or should I help you?" I asked and once again they still looked between each other.

Okay this is going to be interesting, I never knew I hired mutes as security men.

" Since you won't remember, let me help you trigger your memory, give me your gun,”
