Chapter 35- The Culprit
I parked my car outside Vera's apartment complex as I came down and my eyes couldn't help but look at my car window that had a bullet mark. That could have been shot at me.
I closed the car door as I walked into the building then I walked into the elevator.
When I reached Vera's door I knocked and stood for some minutes before a sleeping Vera opened the door as she rubbed her eyes looking up at me.
She went to bed quite early.
“ Sorry for waking you up," I said as she moved aside for me to come in.
“ It's okay, you're welcome here anytime and you know that," she said as she locked her door and followed behind me to the living room.
“ I know something is wrong, what is it?" She asked.
She knew me so well and I couldn't hide anything from her no matter how hard I tried.
“ Earlier someone tried to kill me," I said as she quickly rushed to sit beside me on the couch.
“ What? How?" She asked as she looked at me in confusion.
“ I don't know, I walked out of the company and just when I was about to enter the car, a bullet was fired at me but it didn't hit me, but it hit my car window," I said.
“ What the fuck, why would someone want to hurt you? You haven't done anything to anyone," She said.
“ Exactly, I can't think of anyone I've offended or anyone who wants me dead, well, except her," I said and Vera looked at me with confusion clear in her eyes.
“ Except who? I swear just give me a name and I'll take care of that person, nobody has the right to threaten my best friend, nobody has…” Her eyes started filling with tears and I couldn't help but chuckle as I drew her closer and hugged her.
“ Is this how you're going to fight who wants to kill me, when you're crying? I'm okay baby girl, nothing happened to me, I'm right in front of you, so stop crying," I said as I pulled away from her and wiped her eyes.
“ I'm okay," I said and she nodded.
“ So who do you suspect would be behind this?" She asked.
" My mind keeps telling me it's her but I don't know what I've done to her that would make her do something like that, so I'm really confused,” I said with a sigh.
“ Who are you talking about? I hope it's not what I'm thinking?" She asked.
" Earlier today, she just changed her attitude towards me and then she asked us to go for lunch together,”
" What?! Just like that?” She asked in surprise.
" That was my reaction too, I knew she was up to something, she asked me about myself and then she said we could work better if we were friends and all, I didn't buy it one bit, I knew it was all a ploy to trap me,”
“ She asked you guys to be friends? Your mean boss?" She asked and I nodded.
“ Then today of all days she decided to go home early, she told me it was to pack her bags but with everything that just happened my mind is telling me she did so so she wouldn't be a suspect," I said.
“ This is really strange, but what if she has nothing to do with the attack?" Vera asked and she was right.
What if it wasn't her? But the thing now is who else? Who would want to warn me? Or want me dead?
“ I don't know," I said as Vera's arms came around me in a hug.
“ You have to be careful out there, I wouldn't want anything to happen to you. For now just go rest," She said as she pulled away to look at me with a smile and I couldn't help but smile cheekily at her.
“ You're so cute, you wanted to fight the bad guys but ended up crying," I said with a laugh as she hit my shoulder.
“ Stop it, go get rest," she said as we both stood up.
“ I'm traveling to Paris tomorrow so I have to pack my bags," I said.
I had enough clothes in her house to travel with.
This was basically my second house.
“ Don't worry, I'll help you pack," She said.
" Okay mummy,” I said with a yawn as I walked to the guest room.
I opened the closet and picked out pajamas then I walked to the bathroom to have a quick shower.
I was exhausted and all I wanted to do was fall on the bed and sleep but I knew Mama Vera would have my head if I climbed on her sheets without a shower.
After showering, I dried myself as I got dressed in the pajamas then I stepped out of the room to see that Vera was still packing my bag.
“ Thanks Vee," I said as I climbed into the bed.
Just as I drew the covers and was about to close my eyes I heard my phone ringing.
“ Can I just have peace, who did I offend?" I muttered as I stretched my hand to the bedside table and picked the phone.
Lo and behold, it was arrogant Ariana.
Could she be checking if the mission was successful?
“ Miss Miller," I said as soon as I picked up.
“ I'm sorry for calling by this time Mr. Smith I just wanted to remind you that you have to pick me tomorrow,” Where have you heard of that? That your boss has to remind you.
“ I haven't forgotten Miss Miller, I'll pick you up tomorrow, you don't have to worry," I said as my eyes went to Vera's.
“ Okay, thank you, do have a good night's rest," She said before the call ended.
" Was that the CEO?” Vera asked as I dropped my phone back on the bedside table.
" Yes,” I simply said.
" Could it be…no I don't think she'd take that level of pettiness, it's too much, playing with a person's life,” Vera said with a shake of her head.
" This isn't the first time she's calling me at an ungodly hour so I don't even know what to think,” I said.
“ This is strange and complicated, you have to be careful around that woman if it turns out she's the person behind this," Vera said.
“ Yeah, I'll be careful,” I said as I made myself comfortable again to get some rest.
I have to find out who was behind that attack.
Because what if arrogant Ariana isn't the culprit.
