Chapter 132- The Past Is Knocking
“ Vera," I called as I walked into the house,
“ What is it, Hardin?" she answered from the living room where I heard the sound of the television coming from,
“ Did you find any package when you came back from work?" I asked as I walked to her,
“ No I didn't, why?" she asked as her eyes went to the box I was holding,
“ Wait, you found that outside the door?" she asked and I nodded,
“ What's in there?" she asked,
“ I haven't opened the box yet," I said, I don't know if it was fear of what I'll find inside but I couldn't bring myself to open the box outside not after reading that note,
“ I found this note attached to it by the way,” I said as I passed the note to her,
‘This should help you find out who you are.’
“ Who could this be from and how the hell did they even get in here?" she asked in shock as she waved the paper,
“ I don't know, but I just wonder what's in that box," I said,
“ Well, if you don't open the box you'll never know," she said and my eyes went to the box on my lap,
Do I really want to find out what's inside? What if by opening this box I am opening another world of mystery?
“ Hardin, are you okay?" Vera asked bringing me out of my thoughts,
“ Do you want me to open the box for you?" she asked but I shook my head,
“ I'll open it, I'm good," I looked at the box as I started removing the ribbons,
What if it's a bomb and the moment I open it, it goes off? It's not everyday you just walk to your house and find a box lying on the floor, this isn't Christmas and besides we all know that Santa Claus dropping gifts is a lie, not like we even had the luxury of gifts in the orphanage.
I finally removed the ribbon as I let it fall to the side and then I started unwrapping the paper wrap on the box.
Whoever wrapped this gift sure has talent with wrapping.
All the wraps and ribbon were finally off and before me was a brown box.
“ Come on, go ahead," Vera encouraged,
“ Yeah," I said as I slowly took off the cover with held breath, hopefully a snake doesn't jump out.
My eyes scrunched in confusion when I saw what was in the box.
“ What's in there?" Vera asked as she took a peek,
“ What's that?" she asked in confusion,
I slowly brought out the items from the boss and I grew even more confused,
It was a baby picture of me, I know that because the woman who took care of us showed me what I looked like as a baby, she said she took pictures of everyone from the day they were brought. There was a small diamond cross necklace and a baby pullover.
Why was this here and who could have possibly dropped this?
“ That's you in the photo right?" she asked,
" I think it's me, but who could have sent this and most importantly why?” I asked, not like she could answer my question,
" They said it could help you find out who you are, you never know, you might have parents out there and they might be looking for you," she said and I chuckled,
“ Stop making up things in your head Vera, I'm sure they're dead," I said,
“ Is that what they told you? What if that's not the truth?" she asked,
“ Okay,I like your positivity but I'm not going to let this take my hopes up only to crash it down, thank you for your concern," I said,
“ If you say so," she said with a shrug,
What if this was only a distraction? Whoever brought this wanted me to start looking into it and forget the real matter at hand,
“ I wish someone would give me a clue of who I am, I don't know if my real parents are alive or not, if they abandoned me I'd like to know why," she said and I sighed before wrapping my hand around her shoulder and drawing her close,
“ Don't think about that Vera, we have each of other now and that's all that matters," I said and she sighed,
“ You're right," she said, it suddenly became quiet and we were both lost in our thoughts,
I could remember when Vera was brought to the orphanage, she was a baby, she was about two years old, she'd bug my life following me everywhere and that's how we became best friends.
She still bugs my life till today and there's no escaping her, it's not like I even want to.
“ I'm going to go to bed now Hardin, I was waiting for you, you came quite late," she said as she raised her head from my shoulder,
“ I was quite busy finishing some work with my boss," I said,
" Owwww, you're now finishing some work with your boss late,” she said as she wiggled her brows at me,
" Are you crazy? Don't I used to finish work with Mr Miller late?” I asked with a shake of my head,
" Yeah but Mr Miller isn't a hot blonde,” she said,
“ You're definitely feeling sleepy, go to bed," I said and she stood up with a laugh,
" Alright, alright, good night Hardin,” she waved before walking to her room,
As she left silence filled the sitting room and my eyes went to the picture again and so many thoughts were going through my head,
Should I just burn this fucking thing and forget about it? I know that if I have this thing here with me I'll definitely look into it.
I know I'll be heartbroken if I start looking into this and find out it's all someone giving me false directions and there's nothing for me.
There's no family, no nothing.
I took the picture and I looked at it again. I brought it closer to my face when I noticed something I hadn't noticed before.
No, this cannot be a false lead.
There was a past I needed to revisit.
