Chapter 124 Melissa's Panic
Seeing Queenie's troubled expression, the police officer continued speaking.
"Miss Lorente, please trust us. No matter the extent of the stockings' damage, we can collect evidence and have experts determine their value. Let's see if it's true as the parents claim that a pair of black stockings is worth over three thousand dollars. Please rest assured, we, the police, do not let others lead us by the nose. We make judgments based on evidence."
Queenie pursed her lips. "The stockings are at home. They were torn by the dog after I took them off last night. Should I have someone from my family bring them over?"
Seeing the police officer nod, Queenie called Benoit.
"Honey, could you bring the stockings that were torn by the dog last night? The police comrades at my school want to use them as evidence."
Queenie intentionally emphasized the word ‘dog’.
Benoit hesitated for a moment, then responded with a warm voice, "Got it. I'll have a lawyer bring them over."
His words were concise, and Queenie understood.
After hanging up the phone, Melissa rushed in anxiously from outside. "Comrade police, have you found my ruby necklace? It's very expensive."
The male police officer handling the case looked at Melissa. "Ma'am, we are still investigating."
Melissa excitedly pointed at Queenie's bag. "It must be in her bag! She was carrying this bag when she came to our house last night."
May chimed in, "Then please, comrade police, open that bag and clear our teacher's name as soon as possible."
Queenie understood the situation and smiled lightly, showing no signs of fear.
"You can open my bag, but I have a request."
The male police officer's temper flared a bit. "You have no right to make requests! You are supposed to cooperate with our work, not the other way around."
"Oh?" Queenie calmly raised an eyebrow. "Since that's the case, then wait until my lawyer arrives before making a decision. Right now, I have the right to refuse cooperation."
The female police officer glared at her male colleague before assuming a neutral stance and looking at Queenie. "Tell us your demands first. As long as they are reasonable and legal, we will consider them accordingly. But I remind you, we are the ones who need your cooperation for the investigation, and you should cooperate with us."
Queenie nodded. "Alright. You can search my bag, but I request that you wear white gloves and use sealed bags to preserve the evidence."
With a cold gaze, she looked at Melissa and continued, "Because from last night until now, I haven't touched anything in my bag. If someone wanted to frame me by putting the necklace in my bag, then there would be fingerprints on the gem. I request that the police comrades wear gloves, handle the evidence carefully, and prove my innocence. Is that too much to ask?"
As her voice fell, Melissa grew frantic. The female police officer nodded. "Your request is reasonable."
She then put on the white gloves and took out the evidence bag, cautiously opening Queenie's handbag. Sure enough, there was a ruby necklace inside. Queenie remained composed, while Melissa's lips turned pale. With years of experience in solving cases, the female officer had already reached a conclusion.
Nodding to her colleague, she confirmed, "There is indeed a ruby necklace."
She took out the necklace and placed it in a sealed bag. Melissa rushed forward, wanting to snatch the evidence. "Officer, I just want the necklace back. I won't press charges anymore, I won't sue the teacher."
The female police officer skillfully dodged Melissa's attempt by stepping back a few paces. The male police officer raised his voice, "Not pressing charges? Haven't you said it yourself? This necklace is worth millions of dollars. This is a prosecutable offense that could lead to imprisonment."
"No, I don’t want to press charges anymore. She's my child's teacher. If I sue her, how will my child go to school?"
Melissa pleaded, but the female police officer wouldn't allow it. Melissa begged pitifully, "Officer, it was a moment of confusion. I wanted to sue my child's teacher. I beg you, please give me the necklace back. I won't pursue this matter anymore!"
