Chapter 81 Am I Asking Too Much?
Monica looked at the others in the store and said, "Everybody, let's reason this out. My sister has married into a wealthy family, and she lives in a luxury apartment in Bund Bay. Now, as her sister, and with this one being her biological mother, is it too much to ask for a few pieces of clothing?"
As her voice fell, the wealthy women around them whispered again.
"Bund Bay! That place is worth more than a villa!"
"Yes, a big luxury apartment in Bund Bay is worth three or four suburban villas!"
"So it's not that she doesn't have money. She's just pretending to be poor because she doesn't want to buy for her family!"
Seeing everyone's opinion pointing towards Queenie, Monica proudly walked up to Queenie.
"Sister, see, everyone is now blaming you! I don't believe that Mr. Clancy didn't give you any money! Hurry up, pay the bill, don't embarrass yourself here."
Gilda chimed in. "Yes, I raised you. Can’t you buy a few pieces of clothing to show filial piety to your own mother? Am I asking too much?"
Gilda continued. "It's almost Chinese New Year, and my own mother has never bought me clothes the whole year. What a failure I am as a mother!" As she spoke, there was a hint of choking in Gilda's voice.
"Other people also have daughters, and so do I! I raise a daughter, marry her off without giving a penny to my family, and even smashed the antiques from my family! Why is my life so bitter?"
Gilda wiped the corners of her eyes where there were no tears. "As a mother,, I can't even get a few pieces of clothing now! Explain this to me, what kind of teacher are you? Is there a teacher who shouldn't teach students to be filial to their parents?"
Barbara Clancy knew that Queenie was staying at Mr. Clancy's house, but when she heard the words of the mother and daughter, she exploded!
"You... do you have any shame? The house belongs to Mr. Clancy, and Queenie is just staying there. It's none of your damn business! Moreover, you have the audacity to come and ask for clothes from my Queenie! You shameless people! Conspiring against her and forcing her to live at Mr. Clancy's, don't you have any shame? Filial piety! What a joke! If it were me, I would have stabbed you to death and made it to the headlines! You still have the face to ask Mr. Clancy to buy clothes for people like you. Look at yourselves in the mirror!"
This speech contained too much information, leaving Mary Green, Gilda, and Monica bewildered.
Mary Green's face turned dark when she heard that Queenie was "staying" at Benoit's house.
Gilda and Monica were even more puzzled.
What do you mean by "staying"?
Could it be that Queenie didn't actually marry Benoit?
More and more wealthy women looked at Gilda and Monica with different eyes.
Monica and Gilda couldn't help but glare at Queenie.
"Sis, are you satisfied now?"
"Yeah, you've made us look bad!" Gilda rolled her eyes.
Queenie still smiled faintly, calmly stood up after taking a sip of coffee.
"It's you who made yourselves look bad, not me."
"Let's talk about the issue of being excessive. Is it excessive if I don't buy you these clothes? Not at all. I earn a certain salary per month, and I'm clear about that. With a monthly income of over six thousand, there's no need for me to buy luxury goods for my sister and mother."
"Furthermore, filial piety. Mom, I have indeed bought you new clothes before. I remember when I started working and received my first month's salary, I bought gifts for everyone at home. The gift I got for you was a new piece of clothing, but the next day, I found that piece of clothing in the trash bin. That's why I never bought you clothes again."
"If you really want to argue about filial piety, fine. Let's go downstairs to the shopping street. I can afford clothes there, and as your child, I can buy them for you."
"As for embarrassment, it's your embarrassment, not mine. I made it clear from the beginning that I can't afford to spend my salary here. Yet, you use the titles of older sister and filial piety to make me buy things for you."
“Luxury goods? This is unreasonable. If I buy voluntarily, it is because I am willing to, it is because I am filial. But if you force me to buy, that is moral blackmail! Even if my husband is rich, that is his business, not something I can freely squander!"
As soon as she finished speaking, Mrs. Clifton came out and shouted.
"Well said!"
